It's about that time of year. What was your favorite /toy/ release of the year?
>>
fun fact- the guy who draws the webcomic that comes from is an over-opinionated shitstain. He's like a conservatard version of Walky.

There's no contest here. Disregard everyone else. There are two figures here that I think are landmarks in toy design and they are the Hot Toys 1/4 Boba Fett and the Figuarts Luke Skywalker. These are just all around high quality releases just great detailing. I don't care what the rest of you have to say this isn't a popularity contest we need to make the focus of this board more on art and design. This used to be considered a creative board and uhh character popularity contests don't really uhh help reinforce that image. I guess the other figure that came out really well was the uhh 3A 1/6 Bertie. So yeah uhh try not to post any other joke entries here. Toy of the year it's gotta be for a real landmark toys here uhh superior engineering top manufacturing quality and uhh I think you really get that with uhh Hot Toys, 3A, and Bandai. Nobody else even comes close. So uhh yeah I mean uhh hello /thread

the comic in question was insulting anyone who pirates music, games, movies, etc. The "sophisticated adult" buys his DVDs.

Plus I've seen other examples of his work. The shitty webcomics site praises him, as they do with any pro-right wing idiot, and he's a bit of a snotty bigot.

i think out of the year releases that i got, i should nomiate the thinker as the best one, expresive and really versatile, even the head with the peghole can be used as a screaming/angry expression, fucker's really great; then master asia should come as the second one, even though he didn't come with all planned extra accesories from the old prototypes (loose hair, exposed chest), the revised final product is pretty nice, and finally seeing him out of development hell gave me hope to see other figures that are in limbo in the future.
special mention to figma snake, even though the face can be ugly in cerain angles and lightsources, his articulation is really good, and the ass technology is decent on him too.
i could add neca dante and ml ghost rider, since they are pretty nice, but then there's the mezco batman and dredd, while i don't have them, they look pretty great

I picked up some really great figures released this year - SHF Warsman and Robin Mask, SHF Iron Man Mark 45, Hot Toys Raiden - but the two versions of Mezco's DKR Batman I picked up are by far my favourites.

I've got some SHF Star Wars figures in transit and I'm planning on picking up Mezco's Dredd soon, but unless one of those impresses me more it's definitely Mezco Batman for my toy of the year.

Is it the best figure of the year? No. Not anywhere close, probably not even one of the best Transformers of the year. But I just love it. When I was a kid, I wanted an Armada Megatron more than anything, but my parents would never get it. I don't remember why, maybe they thought it was too violent or something. It just feels so rewarding to have an updated version of the thing I wanted so much as a kid, even though I got the actual Armada figure awhile ago.

I'm gonna second the Frame Arms Girl, but I have to go with Stylet. I look Gourai's look a bit better, but technically speaking, Stylet worked out a lot of the kinks and is a better toy overall.

Especially considering how it's a new IP, I think the only way FAG doesn't win toy of the year is if model kits don't count.

I don't think he's the BEST toy of the year (as my buying habits are fairly limited), but my favorite release of this year was probably CW Ultra Magnus. Fun transformation, nice bot mode, and the car carrier mode was even designed to haul the CW car molds around! Not to mention the piloting gimmick with Minimus Ambus is pretty cool (even though I know next to nothing about the comics aside from the reason this toy has a piloting gimmick)

The guns sucked, though, and I wish those and the bot hands would've just been 5mm compatible. Same with the hammer. Other than that, it's a pretty good toy. I vastly prefer it over last year's Leader toy, Jetfire.

Nah. I'm the guy who posted the image, and I own the figure, and all that, but frankly cloth materials just ain't gonna work for some people. I can respect that, it happens. I hate plastic capes, so it would be ridiculous for me not to empathize with the criticisms that come from the other end of the spectrum.

That said, I feel like anyone who buys it or fiddles with it in person will instantly fall for it. It's just that damned good of a figure.
>>
>>5311757
When it was first announced I was shitting on it here on /toy/ due to the texture of the suit in pictures and the price tag vs things like ThreeA's AP figures.

Very quickly changed my tune when I saw the PX on sale at my LCS, left with it five minutes later. As good as it looked in the box, the figure in-hand was what really blew me away.

'Solid' is probably the best word to describe it. It's a hell of a lot of fun to pose and mess around with, with no fear of it breaking whatsoever.

I keep thinking SoC GaoGaiGar, but ti was a late December release(Dec 28th or 29th 2014,I believe.). It'd easily win if you alllow that technicality.

The SHF line had a ton of winners. The Dragon Ball line has hit its stride and the new releases/headsculpts are much better, Broly being the high point. I really hope I can get awakening Goku before year's end, but I doubt it. Star Wars had a rough start, but Luke drastically changed things for the better. The Toku stuff was all solid generally, and the B-Fighter/Beetleborg stuff really struck a cord with me. The Kinnikuman is just spectacular, pushing that articulation level to crazy points.

>>5310183
This looks fantastic, but I don't really care about the series/design that much to justify the price.

>>5310686
Really want to pick this one up soon. Neca has been getting better and better.

But no one has said anything objective in this thread so far. So far, everyone is basically saying their own favorites or agreeing with someone else's favorite, without putting forth criteria and objective evidence to stake their claim on what is best.

But seriously, Mezco Batman is best. The only other company who has put forth as much detail and perfection into their toy is DC Collectibles and their TAS figures. Nothing but UNF here.

I'd say either Clover or pic related.

Despite having only an alternate pair of hands, Clover is one of the funnest figures I have to pose. She is simple but has such great range of motion. Love the joint system on her.

I love Awakening SSJ Goku because it just looks so wonderful and the finished product was just as good as the promotional pictures. There's a lot of figures that fit this bill, but the DBZ Figuarts line has been mostly suffering, and Awakening SSJ Goku is such a breath of fresh air. Can't stop playing with it.

He's basically impossible to pose standing in anything dynamic though, but he's so fucking fun to play with, making wooshing noises as he flaps around fighting helicopters.
Also, his package si fucking huge and he costs the same as the other figures.

It's a pretty big industry with lots of little niche things so it's to be expected. Looks like SHF DBZ figures, Mezco Batman, Figma Ghost in the Shell Motoko, and that expensive MegaMan have a few votes. We'd probably gain a better consensus if we framed it as a top 5 or 10 of the year, and then averaged inclusions from there. /toy/ has too small of a posting community to gain anything insightful from just one nominee each.
>>
>>5322666
Yeah I think in the past it was done as Top 3 so you would always see some repeated toy which would make me check them out.

I just haven't been on /toy/ much for the past two years and it definitely feels different. People no longer go crazy for Kamen Rider, people are generally more aggressive, I also don't see a toy "everyone" has anymore, well except maybe for creepy woody.

Honest to god, Figuarts Star wars (particularly Vader, Luke, and Maul) are probably the best for this year.

Polynian Clover and Shamrock are also great new figures.
>>
>>5322671
> People no longer go crazy for Kamen Rider,

A few years ago, SHFs were still new and Kamen Rider dominated most of the line, and everyone wanted to try out this line with crazy articulation. It became common for people to buy a random Kamen Rider they had no attachment to just to try it out. Some bought a couple since there really wasn't any line quite on that level of articulation at the time. As the line expanded and other lines began to implement more and more articulation, people dropped these for characters they were more attached to. The Kamen riders were dumped and forgotten, by a lot of people. For a while it became a joke on the BST that people just kept reselling their Bugmen.

>people are generally more aggressive

I honestly think its gotten better than a few years ago. Yeah its not as good as those golden first few weeks, but what is? Things like Greg threads work as hate sponges to sort of absorb all the anger. There's always going to be some animosity, but that comes with the territory.

>I also don't see a toy "everyone" has anymore, well except maybe for creepy woody.

That again, is mostly due to people having their own tastes and those sort of toys being more of a novelty than anything. you snap a few pics of them and then what? Unless you really care about the character, it's just taking up space. I think /toy/'s userbase is more longterm in the hobby overall so most people understand this and are more careful with purchases.
>>

>I honestly think its gotten better than a few years ago
Yep. I think 2013 and most of 2014 may have been the board's lowest point as far as trolls go. 2015 has been a lot better. I hate to say it because of how thoroughly I was against it, but the wholesale implementation of generals has kept a lot of it in check and actually improved the board over time after a rocky start. The little micro-communities know the troll patterns and the janitors in turn know what to trim with greater efficiency.

I vaguely remember the last year TotY and don't remember the ones from before.

I guess it was hidden away by some shill posting a single toy in OP to hide the fact that it was open to discussion, which is why this year there's a lot more entries.

Icons Batman needs a nomination, because he's almost perfect.

I take it you weren't here pre-2010 when generals started being regular?

The only thing that is making /toy/ seem not as bad is the janitor deleting threads wholesale when the tribes create shitstorms when somenoe doesn't agree with the hivemind of their homeland.

Pre-2010, we had a nice sense of community that crossed the brand barriers that exist today.

I didn't like the generals at first, but the results speak for themselves. Trolls are effectively powerless because the mundane variety of conversation we get in the generals makes it easy for janitors to sweep up the messes.

MLs have increased in size over the years, thanks to retooling inappropriate bodies and just a general trend to an increase in size.
That Nova, however, is using an appropriately sized body though, unlike some other figures

So Batman is fine for 1/12 scale.
MLs are creeping to being 1/10 scale.

I think by your own admission that you're blinded by bias, or at least willfully ignorant. There have been western contenders before, and very serous ones at that. Neca's Dutch figure(s) made a huge impact and remained on quite a few toy reviewer's TotY lists that year.
>>
My personal picks:

American figures: Marvel Legends Ghost Rider from the rhino wave. The thing is cool looking and fun as fuck to play with. Wish it came with more accessories, but I got plenty of stuff laying around for him to use.

For Japanese figs a toss up between the Figma bubble-head nurse and Shinichi Izumi. The SAS mostly due to "holy fuck finally getting something for parasyte" not to mention all the nice amount of accessory/alternate hands he comes with. Not to mention that Super Action Statue are usually pretty solid.

For the Nurse its partly do to how well the figure I received was. I assumed they where going to screw up the paint for those veins, but man all the paint job on my was spot on. Its great to mess around with, can get both spooky and sexy poses out of it.

Honorable mention: s.h. figuarts yoshi
Damn thing is adorable and fun as hell to play with. Seems like its really solidly made too.

Those toy reviewers have their own biases and willful ignorance. Most of them don't review Japanese figures beyond popular anime and video game stuff. And they almost always cite sites like BBTS as sources rather than direct Japanese retail.

Are you really telling me Mezco Batman is
>More articulated than an SHF, particularly the newer Kamen Rider SHFs
>Has better build quality than Chogokin stuff
>Has sculpting on par with Hot Toys

I mean, it looks fine, but its not that fucking good. A lot of the praise I seem to be seeing seems to be from people that aren't used to seeing that level of quality on an American toy. Oh, it looks like the character from the fiction, has a bunch of accessories and hands to mimic specific scenes, with articulation, an detail? So does a random Ranger from a sentai figuarts series. Not even the most important ranger ever or anything, just a random blue ranger.

It's not that being Japanese would make it inherently better it's just that I don't see what's special about it beyond being a representation of a character more people know than any random Figuarts. Also, as a Frank Miller fan, something just looks off, the head looks too long and thin. The other planned One:12 collective figures seem to improve a lot of my issues with it, I admit.

I do think there's some American contenders for TotY; the NECA Alien Queen is spectacular, and it has it's own niche that no one else is really doing which helps it stand out more.

Appleseed, and quite a few video game licenses. While they're definitely shooting for realistic textures, the proportions are definitely stylized(though not to the point of a Frank Miller drawing)

Anyway, as far as character accuracy goes, there's still plenty of figures that are accurate to their character that are just as good or better figures. But I realize at this point I'm sounding overly pessimistic.

>there's still plenty of figures that are accurate to their character that are just as good or better figures
And you're more than welcome to put up any of those figures for nomination, like your mention of the Alien Queen.

>>5328850
>I can see how poor your argument is
How? He just posted pictures to prove it can moves?
What do you really want batman to do anyway? How much articulation is good articulation?
> crouch
It's possible with hot toys but why do you want to for what reason? Because he did it once in that one panel?
>>
>>5328858
>calling people trolls for calling you on your damage control tirades on why Mezco shouldn't be anyone's TotY
sure is hot toys rep being a whiny bitch

But yes, looking like the art it comes from and being able to do many dynamic poses is the criteria for many people deciding which toys are worth being considered TotY and why many agree Mezco's Batman is TotY.
>>
>>5310304
too bad it still wont be released for another half a year
>>
>people missing the entire point of "opinions"
Holy guacamole, guys. This was such a simple thread, and now it's this. One guy starts a cascade effect because he doesn't like other people's opinions and feels that, somehow, "correcting" said opinions with equally subjective opinions is the only course of action.

I mean, jesus farting christ, you people amaze me sometimes.
>>
>>5329092
Welcome to the stupidity known as /toy/
>>
>>5329092
>other people's opinions
Ya mezco is better than hot toys is such a valid opinion and he isn't AT ALL treating it like a fact
Fuck off if you have no idea what's going on read the thread

>oh hey these threads always give me a good idea for something new to try
>oh my god it's full of the same two incredibly pathetic guys jesus christ

In the meanwhile, I think if /toy/ could pull it's finger out of it's ass for 5 seconds, if each of the generals voted for their individual ToTY then this would be a LOT more interesting and streamilined in terms of discussion. Stop trying to compare your COMPLETELY different toys to one another and have an actually discussion about things that you are all mutually interested in.
>>
>>5329092
>>5329099
Read the thread, one dude is saying for a fact mezco batman is better than hot toys for reasons that are false. He's not even saying his opinion he's being a troll.
>>
>>5329099
Pretty much. And you still have people like >>5329120 and >>5329127 going on about it STILL. It's equal parts astounding and pathetic.
>>
>>5329143
At least I'm not a third wheel jumping into a conversation he/she wasn't part of and point finger telling people off and saying they are stupid for talking about something they don't like.

Why do you care? You want to feel superior? Then don't post anything but you can't right? Need to tell anons off how they are being stupid even through you have NO idea what's going on the thread?
HAHA I feel sorry for you, at least I'm discussing or proving someone wrong. What are you doing? Pretending to be god and pretending you are smarter for telling people posting on 4chan to discuss something is WRONG hurr durr be nice to one another durrr
Fucking idiot if you have nothing to add don't waste a post by posting something unrelated to anything.

>>
>>5329157
Wow look how un-pathetic you are by NOT posting and ignoring my post. Ya you are the smarter individual like you said in your post how we should just respect everyone no matter what and replying to other's opinion is retarded like how you are doing right now and replying to my opinion and thoughts because you are so much smarter than me.
Yep what a wise person telling other's they are stupid while doing the same thing they were doing.

I thought it was cool too until i saw that it just had a generic werewolfman and franksteinman head on it.
Would have been cooler if it wasn't such a cash in on nostlagia for classic Universal Monsters and instead was just a generic two headed monster.

So the only other thing that is more TotY than Mezco's Batman is this guy.
FUCKING UNF.

Deadon likeness and he's so fucking fun to play with, like most flying stuff.

Well fug. I guess I'll go with Masterpiece Star Saber than.

Why are you faggots arguing over something as personal and subjective as favorite toy? There is no right or wrong answer here.

But that moron acting like MezBats is a Mego figure is dumb as hell

So, 3Anon ruins another thread by dumping on Mezco due to jealousy/fear of competition. It never gets any less sad to see...

I remember a time when Target and Walmart sold everything below MSRP as an everyday price AND also had sales for a higher discount

Also, best under $20 right here.
>>
>>5335048
That's what counts
>>
>>5335030
I bought it from amazon. $19.99 shipped.
>>

Never seen the show?
>>
>>5335367
I haven't. I bought the leprechaun and a drumlo and I just wasn't wild about it
>>
>>5335645
I bought the drumlo and while I think its a great robot damashii, its no amazing piece of toy engineering everyone keeps making it out to be.

I mean, its very sold. All the joints are nice, and well engineered, but so are a lot of other toys. I think the only reason the Drumlo gets so much attention is because so many other Damashiis are mediocre.
>>
>>5335645
>>5335681

I can understand that. I mean, I fucking love my Drumlo, but I also fondly remember the source material and never imagined the Drumlo getting a decent toy.

There are plenty of great toys out there I don't give a shit about; mostly because I've never cared about the stories they came from.

Only collect what you know. You'll be happier, and your wallet will thank you.

SOC GGG = FansToys Sever > Metamor-Force Dancouga > SHF Kinnikuman

I can't only name one and yes, I know GGG is 2014 but I don't live in Japan so I got it in 2015.
>>
>>5337600
Oh, well in that case, my toy of the year for 2015 is a 1998 1/48 scale die cast Dodge Viper.
>>
>>5337654
It isn't comparable. GGG was released just 4 days before new year and pretty much everyone got it on january 2015.

It was also reissued on october this year, so it counts as a 2015 release. Had your 1998 Dodge Viper been reissued this year too, it would also count.
