Pic related is what I look into the mirror every day and remind myself not to become.
Is it okay to ask for suggestions/inspiration as well?
I'm getting ready to buy a few Detolf displays so I can move things off of bookshelves into more orderly set ups, but I have no idea how to light the damned things.
The LED strips that people use leave cables all over the place, and that ends up making an otherwise nice display look sloppy. The only other alternative I've found are rope lights or those bulky tap lights that you can adhere to a surface, and neither is ideal.
I'm so sick of detolfs and I want to get rid of the 3 I have, but I just shoved them in the odds and ends of my house because they're so small. Is there any way to raise an individual detolf? I've seen some people put those boxes underneath but I'm pretty sure they got rid of those.
Why anyone thinks it's acceptable to display anything <2.5ft above ground is beyond me. Then again, people think shit like >>4735823
is acceptable.
>>4735860
One of these will hold two detolfs side by side. It is will within the weight restrictions, but I reinforced mine just in case.
>>4735883
Sorry, totally forgot the link
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O1APF0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is pretty bad ass. Im not a fan of cape shit, but I can appreciate the overall look.
>>4735833
>rope lights
>not ideal
Why the fuck do you people even need to light your collections?
It always looks dumb as shit.
Hello
>>4735936
That my collection, and its far from what I would consider ideal. To each their own though.
>>4735892
Looks like a comic pawn shop.
>>4735860
I think I may break down and pay the $99 delivery fee to get two of these sent to me. Like you said, putting shit at floor level is crumby, you can't see it, and it's liable to get dirty or damaged.
>Pic related is what I look into the mirror every day and remind myself not to become.
You don't want to be a visual effects animator for one of the biggest SFX companies in the world, who's allowed to bring an entire collection of toys to work?
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1629539/
>>4735990
I like the klingsbo, but the little flowery wireframe pattern makes it obvious that it's meant for old biddies to display china and ceramic children compared to the really nondescript Detolf.nothing that'd stop me from using it, because it really is a nice cabinet. I've seen a monsterarts display that looked fantastic in it.
>>4735883
>>4735884
Awesome, thanks, I didn't even bother to check Amazon. I need them for individual detolfs though, so it seems like I'm more interested in this guy.
http://www.amazon.com/Foremost-327606-Modular-Storage-System/dp/B000O1FROO/ref=pd_sim_hg_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1Z20DKDBQV0GEKVEP669
How did you reinforce yours? Also I'm not near (in the same state) as my detolfs, would you mind letting me know if the dimensions on this guy would hold one on the top?
>>4735936
That looks like a christmas setup or some shit
>>4735990
Forgot to respond to you. The curve at the bottom of the legs ruins it for me, along with the shelf just above the ground (the design throws me off). I think I still like it better than a detolf though. I'd have to see pics of it with toys in it.
>>4736000
>That looks like a christmas setup or some shit
Its funny you should mention that, the ropelights are left over from Christmas.
>>4735998
The flowers can apparently be sawed off. People also like to paint them white or brass for some inconceivable reason, it just makes them look like old cheap 60's patio furniture you throw away when an elderly relative dies.
>>4735998
Cut a piece of black posterboard and lay it over the flowers.
My collection. This will put my kid through college one day.
>>4736233
No it won't.
>>4736240
99% of it is still MISB.
>>4736233
Hahahahahahahahahaha haaaaaaaaa haaaaaaa haaaaaa. NO!
>>4736233
No it will reman mostly worthless. Also you should collect for the joy of collecting not for profit. That said if you are enjoying yourself carry on.
>>4736245
Oh god what are you doing with your life. If I pulled 5 boxes at random could you even tell me whats inside?
>>4735975
It's a sweet collection man, I dig the lights actually. Makes me want to buy an eva 13. That's the revoltech right?
>>4736233
Get a load of this faggot
>>4736233
You know kids grow up to resent hoarder parents, right? Because it's a mental illness that usually goes untreated and, more often than not, completely denied despite its impact on others. Hoarders view the items as having a value that trumps the wishes and desires of those around them.
>>4736233
Serious faggot.
>>4736269
>hoarder parents
WTF? It like, two dozen boxes. I most of you peoples stuff and you have hundreds of little crap all over the place. I keep my stuff mint, in the box, and out of site.
>>4736271
What's even IN those boxes? Because unless they're actual collectibles. The only thing you're leaving your kids is a pile of yard sale toys.
>>4736276
Transformers have been the #100 collectors items for like 20+ years.
Sorry I dont collect little Chinese girls or bug men.
>>4736233
>thinking bayformers are worth money
>>4736269
>You know kids grow up to resent hoarder parents
Somehow I doubt that, the kid probably ends up thinking that type of homelife is normal and comfortable and ends up doing the same things later on in life, also genetically they are probably prediposed to have a hoarder personality.
>>4736233
transformers
>>4736245
transformers
...I'm seeing a pattern here
>WTF? It like, two dozen boxes
24 boxes is a lot of boxes mang
>>4736278
Much easier ways to make money, man. If you keep your stuff out of sight and unopened, and your only reason for collecting is because you THINK you'll make a large profit years into the future, I highly suggest you stop kidding yourself now. The longer you go on believing that pile of boxed toys is a gold mine (tens of thousands, enough to put a kid through college) the harder it's going to be on you when you finally find out they're worth a couple hundred tops.
>>4736278
>Transformers
Mightykek. Worthless shit is worthless shit, boxed or not.
>>4736278
>Transformers have been the #100 collectors items for like 20+ years.
What the fuck does that even mean? there are 99 items more collectible than transformers? like stamps and fabrege eggs? If you want to fund college for your retard kid, buy Funko Pops! guaranteed to go up in value!! just see how popular they are!
>>4736300
>What the fuck does that even mean? there are 99 items more collectible than transformers? like stamps and fabrege eggs?
I meant the #1 collectable.
>>4736300
>If you want to fund college for your retard kid, buy Funko Pops! guaranteed to go up in value!! just see how popular they are!
Yeah ive been trying to set some of those aside as I can find them.
>>4736297
>>Transformers
>Mightykek. Worthless shit is worthless shit, boxed or no
Again, I guess I should be collecting figma girls or amiboos or shinkis or whatever crap you think is better right?
>>4736306
I sold a basic true blood Funko pop for 3k, bro. Made like 2990 profit. My kid's are GOIN' TO COLLEGE!!!
>>4736309
No, collect whatever the fuck you like. But keeping any dumb plastic trinkets in a box forever - transformers, figmas, vinyl hipstershit, anything - with the expectation that it's going to turn into solid gold with the passage of time and fund anything significant or important is flat-out fucktarded. Sorry princess.
>>4736331
>with the expectation that it's going to turn into solid gold with the passage of time and fund anything significant or important is flat-out fucktarded.
But it happens litteraly ALL THE TIME.
>>4735936
In my house, not ideal, for much the same reason the LED strips are no good. The nearest outlet is two metres away behind a buffet, with no carpet or other furniture to tuck the cables behind.
The tap lights are the closest I've found to a solution, and they're still crap, because they're so ugly and don't light things well at all.
>>4736426
Track lighting.
>>4736432
That's a very distinct possibility. Thank you.
>>4736330
>those robots and those sad looking things
I'd actually buy one or two. Those are adorable.
This is my very first display when /toy/ was in its infancy.
>>4736477
Ah yes, back in the days where you could have a display of just retail tRU toys and not have someone call your collection casual shit or berate you for not importing. Good times.
>>4736477
This is my collection now: >>4720572
Not big on transformers or G.I. Joes anymore.
>>4736503
Funny, I'm kind of the opposite now.
>collected mainly TFs back in 2008-2009
>sold most of them around 2010, started picking up Figuarts, SAS and such
>sold most of the Japanese toys and picked up Transformers again, albeit the most expensive releases
Majority of my collection is still weeb shit though.
>>4736503
>That Akiba Red
Every fucking time
>>4736513
I did the same thing. Started out on transformers (cheap deluxes and shit).
Moved on to robot damashii and revoltech.
Moved up to chogokin macross stuff, and from there 3p / master piece transformers.
The cycle is complete.
>>4736543
he don't give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
>>4736284
Only if the kid has zero social interaction and no access to media. My mother is a severe hoarder and it made my life a nightmare growing up. There was constant friction because if anyone mentioned the piles of junk filling every room she'd go ballistic, there was only one chair in the living room free to sit on which was hers, couldn't have friends round etc.
It's not normal and it's not comfortable for anyone, including the hoarder. Me and my brother bolted as soon as we could and are both minimalists; I have a wall of glass cabinets in my office for my 80s robot collection but other than that the house barely looks lived in. My brother's place is even more spartan.
As for all my mother's shit, which now takes up two houses, two garages and a barn, as soon as she dies it's going in the fucking garbage.
>>4736804
How many dead cats do you figure your gonna find after your mom croaks?
>>4735942
THIS is the best light for your display. LED strips/Christmas lights are shit >>4735936
>>4736334

>>4736334
>litteraly
>>4735823
Is this photo a parody?
The guy sitting on the chair. He just looks so cliche.
>>4737789
>He just looks so cliche.
That stereo type doesn't come from nowhere man.
>>4736497
I like you, you sound cool and those sound like good fucking times.
That is basically how my collection is right now, times 30.
It's a bundle of all the things i enjoy, i've thought about posting pictures and sharing but everyone around here is salty as their mom's vaginas.
>>4737853
I actually very rarely buy Domestic anymore, and have basically imported nothing but $50+ toys all year so far,so maybe that statement comes across as hypocritical. But I'm still an ardent supporter of the concept of buying whatever you like, without worrying what others think about you. I fucking hate elitists, nothing is worse than people who think they're better than another collector over what fucking toys they collect.
And yeah, those were some good times. I remember being an underage B& all those years ago when the first TF movie came out and the movie line was unlike anything we'd seen before. Movie Leader Optimus was one of the first things I ever posted on here. Shame all those archives are gone forever.
>>4737904
Anyone have any experience with LED Tape/LED ribbon?
They seemed kinda neat, but I am unsure how much light they actually produce.
>>4736284
Hoarding is typically triggered by traumatic events in a person's life, at any age. There is no hoarder gene. Seemingly normal people who previously didn't hoard can experience something like a death in the family at say the age of 40 and spiral into hoarding. The whole condition stems from an unhealthy transference of emotional bonding and dependence to a selection of objects, thus a person's rational ability to get rid of said items when they become either too great in volume or hazardous becomes nullified.
>>4737921
I put one up in a room across the ceiling and it light up everything pretty well. It was a RBG strip though, so no actual white. I think when I inevitably redo my shelves I'm going to use these because they're so thin and easy to hide the cords.
>>4735936
This looks awful
Also, split up your fucking Evas asshole, no one is giving you $150
>>4737921
They are pretty darn bright, actually.
>>4737921
Do they come in white? I really hate that yellow / incandescent look. It makes everything look dingy and dirty.
>>4735833
>The LED strips that people use leave cables all over the place,
Not that hard to make it look neat. You can just electrical tape them to the shelf supports and run the wires along a back support through a wire zipper thing. I used this one.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CC620QW
That does still leave the connector box for the lights (Ikea dioders in my case) so I put in some fabric/printed backgrounds to hide it behind and add character. All on top of a KALLAX.
>>4738126
>Not that hard to make it look neat
>Showing My Little Pony collection.
Nigga what are you doing?
Is it possible to switch the side that the Detolf door opens from?
>>4738141
Yes.
>>4738141
You mean either the right or the left? Yes.
>>4738126
I think that looks pretty damn cool, actually. I know people will bitch, but I actually wanna see more.
>>4738126
Pics like this are making me want to put a cover on my detolf shelves more and more. But I just don't know... And couldn't you cut the little plastic strip that holds the back walls of the detolf so that you could sneak the cords out through there, and effectively have that cord dangling on the outside, behind the cabinet?
Plus I STILL CAN'T FIND A SINGLE MODULAR CUBE TO PUT UNDER MY DETOLF. Fuck KALLAX for not making single cubes.
>>4738148
Yeah, you're a few years too late. Expedit had a single cube but they discontinued the line.
Doubt you could fit a wire between the panes of glass, they're pretty tight together.
>>4738126
This looks nice. Are those standard ikea LEDS?
>>4738126
>ponyshit
Disgusting.
>>4738169
They're the Ikea dioder multicolor ones.
>>4738126
this is exactly how I imagine modern star wars fans
>>4738173
Ahhhhhh, I see. I thought the light color was a lot cooler than the standard. I need to look into those. Thanks.
>>4738126
I have to give you credit, that is a really nice display. Not awful cluttered, shows your interests properly. I give you a supportive thumbs up.
>>4738147
There's not much more to see so here's a close-up of the group having lunch, Shelob serving.
>>4738195
Here, rather.
>>4738170
>I thought about doing this but I can't get over how bad the two middle columns look when you do that. It's so fucking distracting to me.
I've never seen it in person, but yeah that is one thing that I was thinking about. The metal posts cutting through the middle of an otherwise open area is kind of jarring. Still, for my purposes it might be cool to do.
>>4738198
Well that's...cute, actually.
>>4738126
Love the Boba Fetts!
>>4738126
Shit, I have always been iffy on Detlofs because they seem too "showy"- like a dessert case in a diner. But I never thought of adding flooring/backgrounds to set up mini dioramas like this. Really cool display, thanks anon.
>>4737975
You sound mad faggot.
>>4736233
>It's old so it's clearly worth money

>>4736330
I've.never seen evirobs.on toy before. They're on the top left. I have the 3 main sets.
>>4738126
Is that Kallax or Expedit? What are the odds it will collapse under the weight of 3 detolf?
>>4738894
They've been on there for over a year so far and the Kallax feels a solid as day one. Here's hoping they don't have some sudden massive failure.
>>4738126
>Bobas
>Ponies
I see you're the anon that's going to make me drink piss in the fall.

>>4738126
Who is that behind Knuckles there? I think it's a Muppet, but I can't quite make it out.
>>4739120
You are correct, sir.
>>4739137
That is Mac from Chicken Run.
>>4735883
30 inches wide, my Detolfs are 16.75 inches wides, so there will be some overhang. Is that how yours are? Because I don't like that look.
>>4735999
Again, that single unit has a measurement of 15 inches wide while the Detolf is 16 3/4inches. Unless you like a wider Detolf on a thinner base I would look elsewhere.
Unless my calculations (or the reported measurements on Amazon) are mistaken.
>>4739713
>office is a clusterfuck
>movie robots are a clusterfuck
It all makes sense now.
>>4739699
Damn. Well thanks for clearing that up. I guess I'm just shit out of luck with raising a single detolf. It honestly looks to be fucking impossible without going to a hardware store and making my own.
>>4740993
I know; I wish someone made a sturdy shelf that was wide enough. I'm not really a handyman, so I'm afraid anything I made myself would look like crap.
>>4740998
Anyone could make a simple cube without fucking it up, come on man. I just don't want to do it because I don't live in the house with my detolfs at the moment, and I'd have to make 3 of them which would probably take up a whole trip of going back to visit.
>>4741047
I have no doubt I could make one that would support my shelves, I just don't know enough about finishing wood to create an attractive piece of furniture that would match my décor, and I do not have the time to take up woodworking as a hobby.
I have four Detolfs in my living room, two on either side of the television. Being as they are in clear view in the main room of my home, I would want something that looks really nice.
>>4741063
I think you're in luck then, it seems like it's much easier to support a detolf when you've got more of them side by side. I've got 3 of them just in odds and ends, corners that they fit in were it would just be a waste of space otherwise.
>>4741090
Well if you can find a piece of furniture that would support two Detolfs next to each other without any overhang and isn't too tall, let me know where to get it.
>>4736334
>But it happens litteraly ALL THE TIME.
You have to be trolling.
Do you know why old toys end up being expensive?
Because kids played with them and more than 90% of them were destroyed.
Combine this with the nostalgia effect and you have some 40 something paying $3000 for a vinyl cape Jawa.
Right now you are buying into what caused the comic book collectors market crash in the 90's: buy everything because it's going to be "collectible" and make you a fortune because you have no fucking clue what makes actually old toys collectible.
my collection of toy video cameras
>>4742489

>>4742489

i don't know what kind of shelf i should use to best display this as it increases in size. detolf doesn't seem right since I mess with them often and would like a large diorama on the same plane. also need to figure out how to light a top shelf without it looking hideous

Silverfish. I left my SW shit in storage for a decade+, I came back and the toy boxes were nibbled away at and full of dead silverfish parts. Now I can't even sell it NRFB for $1, I gotta wash it and sell it loose 3/$1.
>>4743378
I was just moving some stuff around outside that was under an old blanket. Saw a silverfish and a little garden skink. Caught the little dude and put it in the front yard since I didn't want it to get squished under something(happened to one that got in the house)
>>4743430

any advice for my shit display? I wanna get some new shelves, but I'm new to the whole collecting thing so I don't know the best options out there.
>>4744989
Any kind of shelving (I recommend wall shelving) will do, as long as it looks tasteful in general. If you want glass cabinets (fancier looking, best pro is the fact that you'll need to dust less), the only really cheap option is a Detolf from Ikea.
For larger collection, considering clear acrylic stands so it looks less of a clusterfuck. Also: general tip but don't mix so many kinds of figures together. Keep a general trend (eg. you can have a display devoted to Predators/Aliens/etc, another for the superhero stuff, etc.)
>>4736284
My father and aunt grew up with a hoarder mother. She collected what were then "collectibles"--old pretty shit, frou frou stuff. The house was never cleaned since she was allergic to dust (wtf, right?) and the kids regularly went without food since she used the household funds to buy new nice shit, some of which was never removed from their boxes. My aunt was the youngest child and stuck at home the longest--she has told me of how she did her best to scrub out the living room and front bathroom so that she could have guests over. Both my aunt and father have very spartan homes. They both resented their mother and moved out and away as quickly as they were able.
>>4738126
Looks nice and clean. I like the background idea.
>>4745006
>For larger collections, consider clear acrylic..**
>>4745006
cheers lad. they're mainly all together as I don't have much shelfroom. I'd definitely keep them confined to genre/franchise if I had the space, so I guess I'll get some of those vertical display cases.

If you mean the Detolf, it doesn't fit 20", unless you don't mind making them crouch or something.

Throw out that Funco trash.
Paint your walls and furniture a more neutral color
>>4745042
But l like the Funco trash. Yeah, I should really repaint my room. It was painted black/red when I was like, 16.
>>4745029

>>4745227
Silverfish usually inhabit relatively humid areas so you should be okay, but I've seen them in a climate-controlled room (a university science lab used year-round and kept at a fairly constant temperature and humidity) so it's just one more thing to be aware of keeping an eye out for. I think you have more to worry about from cockroaches. If you're just storing boxes I would invest in a large plastic storage tote.
>>4736233

I did a little dusting and moving around on my corner shelf. We're getting ready to paint this room and get a bunch of new shelves so everything just kinda hanging out at the moment.
>>4748415
Level above that one. I'm really looking forward to spreading this collection out and having fun with more space.
>>4748396
Not the anon you're replying to, but I don't think it's that much of a stretch to at least say his generalization has some truth behind it. I've seen multiple people on this site post collection of expensive Japanese shit (or just expensive shit in general) only to have it displayed on some really cheap looking particle board shelving.
I've been on this board for like 5 years and have only seen about 6 collections total that don't look like the owner spent all their money on toys and put whatever scraps were left towards actual shelving.
And then there's the fact that when someone actually posts a nice looking collection, people will shit on it more than they shit on someone who has a not-so-good-looking collection. There's that one guy who's collection gets posted by trolls so much that it's practically meme. Then there's someone else here who I remember sort of documented his display room's progress over the course of a year, posting updates in display threads who was straight up told that though his collection looks nice, it upsets people when they see it in collection threads (wtf?).
There are a few other instances of /toy/ basically hating anyone whose display looks nice, but I don't remember any specifics unlike those two times.
>>4748420
One more level. I would absolutely love to have nicely articulated figures of Yu Yu Hakusho but these does nicely for now.
>>4748425
>I would absolutely love to have nicely articulated figures of Yu Yu Hakusho
Absolutely agree. In Japan Kurama was as popular as Goku back in the day, it's crazy to think how little we've gotten from them in the modern era. Then again it's hard to sell figures in japan not pandering to pedophiles, moefags, video game nerds, or mecha/bugmen fetishists.
What are those little clear box things called?
>>4748490
acrylic boxes
>>4748421
I don't get why people care so much, especially when most people here think that $30 Ikea glass case is seen as some high tier display.
Almost everyone here seems like a poorfag who crams almost their entire collection into one bookcase and don't even use a glass case correctly, by shoving it into a corner or against a wall next to other cases.
The entire board lives in glasshouses, or rather, glass-basements. Yes, even those that actually own their own (small) home/condo.
tl;dr: no one here can afford to be snobby
>>4748421
That's because this is /toy/, not /furniture/
>>4748421
> put whatever scraps were left towards actual shelving.
>tfw most of current building projects including a wood shed are made mostly if not entirely out of pallets
>Next project is shelving and cases for room made of aforementioned pallets
I am gonna be displaying my stuff on literal left over scraps.
>>4748490
Acrylic Risers?
>>4748631
>no one here can afford to be snobby
Which was exactly my point. But for some reason, everyone here likes to criticize (not critique) everyone else's taste in toys/shelving. I personally don't like the majority displays I see here on /toy/, but I can definitely appreciate them for what they are.
Meanwhile, almost everyone else here on the board likes to create hostility by throwing insults left and right without even posting their displays, just adding to the toxicity that is /toy/.
>>4748754
>almost everyone else here on the board likes to create hostility by throwing insults left and right without even posting their displays,
Not everyone needs to be a chef to know that a blackened noodles are gross.
it's one thing to be snobby, but another to not look gross. Even poorfags can have a great looking display.
>>4748767
Holy shit thats my collection.
>>4748827
dust it then! that's fucking nasty!
>>4748767
It's one thing to criticize something like pic related. It's another thing to criticize something like >>4748284. Pic related is obviously a filthy person. The guy in the other post has a nice collection of figures on a Walmart tier bookshelf. Of course, everyone will jump in his shit about his bookshelf, and despite the fact that (in my opinion) his collection of figures look really nice, there will always be a group of assholes who'll say he has shit taste.
>>4748857
Looks comfy.
>>4748864
I'm not even that guy, but how in the world is it a clusterfuck? Every figure can be seen in almost its entirety.
What do you think it should look like? Care to give an example (I'm a visual person)? Even better, what's your collection look like so I can see what your definition of proper figure organization looks like so I can compare it to mine.
Don't know if this is the best thread but how does one display/take care of things like Hot Toys with softer material? I want to get Drax and think he'll have a rubber body so I want to know how most display their hot toys with such material.
>>4748878
>you hate blackened noodles?! let's see your chef license so i can take you seriously!
uh huh
anyway, there's no room around each figure. They're all elbow to elbow and it's 3 rows of that? Clusterfuck.
>>4748892
Post a picture of your collection.
>>4748892
Each figure can be clearly admired. He's using risers to make sure they're not standing right behind each other obstructing each other view (like your picture implies). They're also almost all in interesting and dynamic poses.
But yea..like the other guy said, let's see what your collection looks like so we can compare notes.
>>4748894
>how dare you hate on blackened noodles that are also my specialty! Let me see whatever it is you cook so i can spit on it!
I've been on the internet for too long, so i know that anything i would show off would be shat on no matter what
>fucker! just post it or are you ashamed that your noodles are more burnt than mine!?
yeah yeah
>>4748898
If he were posting soldiers or a team of something where them being that together makes sense, it wouldn't look so bad, but having no space around them is just ugly and a lot of them ARE overlapping, even though the camera has an overhead perspective for almost all the shelves.
>>4748950
Post a picture of your collection.
>>4748960
I'm not arguing, I just want to see what his collection.
>>4748960

>Anon 1 shits on someone's collection
>Anon 2 asks to see Anon 1's collection
>Anon 1 deflects the request for 3 posts

>Implying this isn't samefagging at its finest
Wow I didn't think that picture would cause such an uproar.
>>4748394
I don't know if its a Walmart book case or not. A roommate left it when he moved out so I decided to keep it.
>>4748635
True.
>>4748631
I've looked at the Ikea shelves and they're a bit small for my taste. I would like to buy a couple and mod them together. However I'm concerned about dealing with a large display case for when I move, the bookshelves are easier to manhandle.
>>4748892
What would be the ideal distance between figures? Would it be the same for all reguardless of size? The HCM pros pack together real easily, but I would guess the Robot Damashiis usually need more room.
>>4748898
The angle's also different if you're looking at them in front of the case or from across the room. I think the second to bottom shelf has the most issues.
>>4748950
I've tried to minimized the side-to-side overlap. Is your concern more with the top-to-bottom overlap?
>>4749246
>subjectanon
>ever leaving a thread
Ha, as if.
>>4742527
i like how everyone just ignored this
>thread getting derailed before someone could answer my question
it's this if someone who isn't going to argue with SA would be kind enough to answer >>4748886
>>4748284
What's the figure with the halo on the bottom shelf?
>>4738126
I admit, I'm pretty jelly of that display. My detolf has the IKEA puck dioders centred on the underside of each shelf so the fronts of items arent getting the light properly. I'd move the pucks towards the front but they're stuck firmly in place now.
I like the very clear compartmentalising of the stuff by interest too, you've got a lot in there but it doesn't look like a clusterfuck. Even the best pone case displays well.
>>4748894
>>4748898
>>4748955
>>4748966
>SA taking pictures of his own toys
Like he could afford a camera that would take pictures of a high enough quality to not trigger himself.
>>4749161
Ideally, the space inbetween each figure would be the same space you give another person if allowed, which is ~3 feet. Translated to those figures, i guess it would be two or three inches.
As for overlap, it shouldn't happen, unless they're directly related. Like say, if that valkrye had the battroid standing directly behind it. Basically, if two or more figures are standing, it's because they're part of the same series or team. You want to keep your display to look thematic, so someone who doesn't know shit will be able to recognize if something is part of the same series. To someone who's a fan, they'll instantly be able to pick on who's who and spot the series.
When i look at it at your display, it's like doing a Where's Waldo. I can recognize some of the mechs and others i can't. One obscuring another doesn't help. It's just a mish-mash display, almost without rhyme and reason.
If it were me, i'd have staggered the display to maximize focus. So one figure stands on the bottom, nothing on the next tier, and then another figure on the top tier. Next row bottom has nothing, second tier has a figure, and the top tier has nothing. Instant focus and displayability.
The ones you have two or teams of would work best on those second tier spots, since it leaves a lot of free room for them.
Also, what's up with your lack of Doms?
>>4749586
>you should rearrange your figures so that it's how I arrange my figures
>other people who might see your displays should take priority over how you'd like things to be arranged
>when I look at your figures it is not how I have my figures arranged and this confuses my eyes
>and why don't you have more of the figures that I like?
>did I mention sculpts and precise proportions? be sure not to buy any that I don't approve of you fucking fanboi
Not mine, but i would love to have this set up eventually.

>Tv off center from the couch.
>Having to constantly look left to watch TV.
>>4749586
Ideally, you die in a house fire.
>>4749586
I could probably manage 2 in between them if I used the bottom two shelves of the smaller bookcase. The HCM pros will of course be closer together.
I have them arranged by toyline as best I can:
Top is Gundam Fix Figuration
Next is Robot Damashii
Next is Robot Damashii and HCM Pro
Next is Gaogaigar
Next is the shelf I have most issues with. Its one row Macross, one row Code Geass, and The front is what I had left.
Bottom is Revoltech
I have a GFF and a HCM Pro Dom. I'm not interested in making a Jet Stream Attack so that's enough for me.
>>4748892
>>4748950
>blackened noodles
a more apt description is his display is just hotdogs or hamburgers. Simple basic, but clearly NOT a nasty mess that screams out lack of care for anything other then collecting.
Blackened Noodles would be >>4748857 or even >>4735823 but at least the OP pic does not have a messy floor.
>>4749731
Oh FUCK this is going to bother me the rest of the day now
>>4738126

What's on the frame? Looks like one of those party hats that appear on image posts - a thread screencap?
I like the framed comics, might try that myself...

It looks to be this screencap.
>>4749731
Not to mention you block off shelves back there completely.

So your only reason to not post it is because people will make fun of you display?
what a fucking goo goo gaga baby.
Stop being a pussy and just post it. I mean fuck, you claim to be a legit arbiter of good and bad displays, so show yours you gigantic pussy.
>>4750672
It's got to be a shitty display otherwise he would.
Hell, I posted the one with ponies in it and had a majority positive reaction. I can't imagine what anon has that he's afraid of us seeing.
>>4749586
>Ideally, the space inbetween each figure would be the same space you give another person if allowed, which is ~3 feet
...Why? Not every collector is aiming to have a realistic diorama with figures set perfectly apart. Some people just want their figures visible to people in the room but also accessible if they want to mess around with them. I agree if you only have 10 or so figures on a fairly decent sized shelf then it'd be retarded to have them displayed shoulder to shoulder touching each other, but if you happen to have a lot of figures its not exactly easy spacing them perfectly the same fucking distance from each other.
>>4750768
while I don't agree with the strange idea that figures should have the equivalent distance people stand to each other.
Negative space is important in displays, that's why clusterfucks are frowned upon. looking at a group of figures the space in between them should be interesting shapes as well.
This kind of design principal is just basic drawing compostion stuff I learned in high school.
but i guess nowadays, kids might not have art class anymore.
>>4750731
Honestly, though, this is the first time in ANY display thread I've been in where people have actually stood up to a troll, called him out on his bullshit, and apparently ran him out of a thread. Not only that, but there's actually an intelligent, troll-free conversation going on where people are actually critiquing a display rather than criticizing it.
Looks like progress to me.
>>4736284
You never grew up with hoarders obviously. My Grandmother's hoarding is affecting her life. My father's hoarding is barely manageable and at least related to his hobbies, but I still found it annoying as fuck growing up. I'm constantly downsizing, throwing away, donating what I own, and I still feel like it's too much sometimes. My mother and brother are both incredibly non materialistic because of this. If it doesn't serve an immediate function, or incredibly sentimental, it gets tossed. I feel like I'm somewhere in the middle. I like collecting, organizing and taking care of the things I own. But even with what I have, I feel as though it's too much sometimes. Everything I own fit inside of a 20 foot moving truck and a one bedroom apartment for reference.
>>4751036
Racaseal from Phantasy Star Online. That's the Chogokin version, there's also a model kit that doesn't look nearly as nice.
>>4751048
>there's also a model kit that doesn't look nearly as nice.
git gud
>>4751048
Thanks.
That figure would look right at home next to the Nobel Gundam.
Maybe I could branch off from collecting 1/100 MGs and get a female robot themed collection going....
>>4751057
Don't get me wrong, I'm actually more of a fan of the Koto sculpt, I think it's cuter (plus the clear eyes on the Chogokin freak me out). But simply on an objective level, even if you have great modeling skills, the kit still falls way flat in terms of articulation, accessories, and sculpt detail.
>>4749855
Yeah, "blackened noodles" might be too negative, so a better metaphor would be steak. Simple as shit to make. A little heat creates orgasms for your mouth. Too much heat and you have an edible plank of wood.
Judging by the responses, it seems like /toy/ really loves their steaks well done and considers anyone who likes for the juices to still be pink as trolls.
>>4750768
>... Why?
Ever look at people in public? Ever notice how people who know each other stand closer together than those who don't?
That familiarity looks good and draws the eyes when they're supposed to be together. Standing further apart makes you understand that some random mech is from another series. IT just looks good... in theory. And yes, it's basic art design, since space gives a clear image of what oyu're looking at, instead of one rambling construct from end to end.
>but if you happen to have a lot of figures its not exactly easy spacing them
Then maybe you should put some of them away, instead of keeping them out in a clusterfuck. Learn to rotate your displays, or just expect people to comment on your clusterfuck, because it is ugly.
>>4750948
>stuff I learned in high school.
dems trolling words around here.
Best keep your head down and play dumb, or you'll get a mob coming after you too.

I can think of at least one place they fit in.
>>4738126
Dude, you should know better than to post mlp stuff here. Shit isn't going to end well. Still, I gotta give you props for the background idea...it adds a splash of color to your display that is surprisingly pleasant to the eye.
>>4754454
Honestly it's one of the better displays I've seen so far that aren't those memepics of the same display over and over, it's nicely done, and plus if it's something they personally enjoy, why not display it? Fuck the haters.
