I still don't get why his riot baton would be able to deflect a lightsaber
>>
>>44297919
Because is made of Cortosis alloy the hardest metal known to Star Wars and Cortosis can deflect Lightsabers.
>>
>>44297919
Why can't a stun baton that works on space magic science deflect a laser sword that also works on space magic science?
>>
>>44297919
There's so much stuff in the EU that can block a lightsaber you can literally pick any one out of a dozen explanations.

>>
>>44297949
Cortosis is actually very very fragile, it only deflects lightsabers because of it's strange conductive/disruptive properties. Conventional steel can shatter cortosis quite easily, however.

Why would a riot baton be made out of a lightsaber resistant material when you can count the number of jedi in the setting on one hand
>>
>>44298039
It's the stun field around the baton that blocks it. It's the same reason why Grevious's guy's sticks would block lightsaber attacks.

Light sabers can't go through other energy fields.

Hang on, hang on, if you can just make batons of this crap, why can't you make a big anti-lightsaber shield? Or a bloody suit of armour? Or a net? If there's an easy way to beat this stuff, then why would you ever use a lightsaber? Can these things deflect bullets?
>>
>>44299478
>Hang on, hang on, if you can just make batons of this crap, why can't you make a big anti-lightsaber shield? Or a bloody suit of armour?
It's an energy field, pretty much like a powermace. If it were a suit of armour it would probably roast its wearer alive or keep them in constant paralysis. A regular force field is enough of a shield to prevent a lightsaber, it's what the droidekas used.

>Or a net?
I don't see why it can't be made into one, a stun/energized net sounds like something a bounty hunter would use.

>If there's an easy way to beat this stuff, then why would you ever use a lightsaber?
Because Jedi and Sith train hard to be as good with their weapon as possible, as well as using the force to give them an extra edge.

>Can these things deflect bullets?
Nope.

Why would you drain a sun to power a weapon? Wouldn't extinguishing a star destroy any life existing on planets within its system?

How did Rey know how to use the Jedi Mind Trick despite believing the Jedi weren't real and having no knowledge or training in the Force?

Why was Phasma in the movie when she didn't do anything?

Why did R2-D2 shut down when Luke left despite having the only piece of information that could lead to his whereabouts?

Why did they include a scene with Rey wearing a fighter pilot helmet and whistfully watching a ship leave the atmosphere when her primary character motivation was to never leave Jakku?

Why was Rey the worst character?

Her motivation was to wait for her family on Jakku, I'm sure the moment that had happened she was fully expecting to get the fuck off the planet.

I know nothing about the EU, but Iassumed it was specifically designed as a sort of crude Imperial answer to lightsaber technology. Presumably the zappy electrical bits use the same field the lightsaber does, so they repel. Maybe it cuts, too, or maybe it's just a stun thingy.

This is presumably a common enough stormtrooper weapon that Fin got training with it, hence why he can handle sword combat and only mostly suck.

Of course we also don't really know Rey's backstory at all, which may or may not be explored.
>>
>>44299836
In the movie, somebody mentioned that the Even Bigger Death Star was a "hyperlightspeed weapon."

I took this to mean that it works like the Long-Gun technology from Schlock Mercenary - you fire the weapon, and you fire through hyperspace to hit *any star system in the galaxy*. The Weapon was presumably almost totally stationary, in the middle of a dense star cluster, where hundereds of suns could be reached through sublight or only barely superluminal travel.

So it doesn't consume the Sun of the system it's firing at - that would be pointless. It consumes a different sun, umpteen thousand light-years away.

This is sufficiently threatening that it almost excuses "let's build an even bigger death star."
>>
>>44300069

>>
>>44300434
In the (currently non-canon) Dark Empire comics Sheev basically build a big-ass gun on Byss that could shoot planet-busting antimatter missiles through hyperspace anywhere in the Gakaxy, so it's not really a stretch to assume that in this continuity some folks would try something similar; a reinforced position capable of hitting anywhere without even needing to move.

I don't think there's much info on them, but it seems they prefer the child indoctrination thing from what we know.

>>44300473
I mean, I figure that training "How to stop the other man putting the glowing end into you with this zappy stick" gives you at least a little insight into the use of the glowing thing.

Clearly not enough, since Fin still got pretty rekt.
>>
>>44300535
The six-foot Chrometrooper with the swag cape.
Apparently she'll be appearing in future installments, I guess they're trying to make her the Boba Fett of this trilogy.

Which sorta fits if Finn is Rey's Han.
>>
Rey really was the worst character, though.

I'm hoping Kylo Ren pulls a reverse Luke, and gives Rey a wooping in Episode VIII
>>
>>44300514
If the Funky Four could get out of the trash compactor despite the pests, compacting, and Han Solo then she probably managed it too. So she'll be good to go for the next movie, if a bit miffed.
>>
>>44300553
>Clearly not enough, since Fin still got pretty rekt.

Finn didn't seem to be particularly Force-sensitive (if he was at all) and I'm guessing lightsaber fencing wasn't in his curriculum at Stormtrooper school.
Apparently Finn was in the top #10 of his class there according to what limited materials there are about it, which I kind of have a hard time believing.

Either that or Stormtrooper standards are pretty low.
>>

I dunno. I couldn't even tell if he was dead or not. I assume not since he's still contracted to appear in other films I believe, but who knows?
The second film won't have the same director so you might not get the same kinda thing using the same notes.
>>
>>44300557
It's time to complete his training.

And with all the anger, frustration and grief from killing his father and getting spanked by a girl, he's probably in perfect condition to get a big dark side juice injection.

So I wouldn't hold a significant power up for unlikely here. Smack down the heroes in movie two, setting up for the reversal and happy ever after in three. Tried and tested storytelling.
>>
>>44300593
Lightsaber fencing isn't, adapt and overcome is probably in it however.

Also he did good for what little skill he had. He is still probably not force sensitive, but if hes Landos son he might be good at bluffing.
>>
>>44300368
There is a lot of overlap when it comes to most melee weapons.
>>
>>44298091
No he didn't, it seemed to me like he wanted the traitor killed, hence he rushed into combat.

And why are we assuming a stun baton when no one else used one?
>>
>>44300631
Abrams said outright that he's not as powerful as Vader yet.
Hell, I think his lightsaber might actually be an improvised thing; you noticed it's blade was flickering and hazy around the edges rather then clean, solid light?
Apparently the prop shop called it the "Junk Lightsaber".
I think rather then start as the galaxy's biggest evil threat guy Kylo Ren will slowly grow more dangerous over the films along with the heroes, which is an interesting choice thematically.
>>44300634
He did great, honestly.
Kylo Ren isn't quite Vader yet but it seems likely he has a at least a little more training then Finn does in that sorta stuff and Finn sure didn't embarrass himself in that fight.
>>
>>44298091
He pretty clearly dropped his blaster because he wanted to beat Finn to death for turning against the people he was raised with.

You could hear the sense of betrayal in his voice.
>>
People also forget that Kylo has a big hole in his gut from Chewie's bowcaster. He was fighting at a disadvantage the whole time and still managed to bring Finn down and almost give Rey the closest shave of her life.
>>44300638
In the ANH novelization, Luke recognizes the lightsaber for what it is and Obi-Wan mentions how "it's still used in some galactic regions." Even with Jedi and the Force long forgotten, people know the basic idea of the lightsaber just like modern people now know how a sword is supposed to work, roughly.

To be fair, Kylo was not in good shape. He'd sustained multiple injuries and emotional trauma.

And Rey used the Force. Kylo's just not as strong with it, especially given how torn he is between the Dark and the Light.
>>
>>44300784
Damn, you just know that we won't get that. It'll just be Phasma.
>>
>>44300729
We have no idea what his hand to hand capabilities are when unwounded. As is, he definitely has stronger willpower/pain tolerance than any movie force user -- absolutely any other force user that is wounded half as bad as he was simply cannot function, at all. Just look at how losing his hand completely shut Vader down.
>>
>>44300729
I get the feeling he was basically seduced away before it really began and was basically told to sink or swim rather then given actual training by Snoke.
I'm pretty sure he was just seeing if he could be useful enough to warrant future investment, especially since Kylo was very clearly torn up about his decisions.
He's like an Anakin from Episode II who WANTS to be Vader but without the necessary experience or angst to actually be him yet so he's kinda overreaching himself in a lot of ways.

I think it suffices plenty most days just because of how few even half-trained Jedi there were running around; a shitty skill is sufficient when nobody else has the necessary skills to counter it.

Rey was clearly pretty gifted in the Force, and I think might actually somehow be related to look; that pilot's helmet was very clearly "Red Five's" helmet, so either she had a replica of she somehow got ahold of Luke's old flight helmet from Yavin.
>>
>>44300453

Don't they have...shotguns for that purpose?
>>
>>44300755

Because.....

>>
>>44300802
Guy took a fucking bowcaster shot to the side; we see those blowing literal holes in stormies and sending up tiny explosions.
I'm guessing he was wearing some kinda armor to survive that shit, but it can't have left him in good shape.
>>
>>44300848
Slugthrowers are not only uncommon weapons, but they are absolute crap against any threat other than an unarmored jedi wielding a lightsaber.

Regular guns are shit in the star wars universe.

This is not new information.
>>
>>44300729
>Nickname: Jedi Killer
>can't even kill civilians

ayyy
>>
>>44300848
Generally speaking, if somebody's, weilding a lightsaber, shooting is a bad plan.

I'm not saying it makes 100% sense, but nothing in Star Wars makes 100% sense below the surface level.
>>
>>44300848
Even good buckshot today is garbage against even low-grade bodyarmor. It's too low-velocity and obviously you don't put a spitzer point on shot.

So they probably figure it'd be pointless to carry one around on the off chance you encounter one of an extinct order of knights.

The baton at least was justified as being for riot control and civilians, not for use in combat against modern enemies.
>>
>>44300884
>I'm not saying it makes 100% sense, but nothing in Star Wars makes 100% sense below the surface level.

Star Wars is basically Space Fantasy with Objective Good and Objective Evil with knights and magic and princesses.
It's designed to be pretty silly and fun in a lot of ways.
>>
>>44300555

Hope it's more of general vs general.

In the background, Finn is stupid accurate with blasters (like 30 something or 30 something +1 kills/shots in a training exercise) and Phasma was probably going to send him to officer school before he went awol
>>
>>44299698
That is so fucking cool. This one short exchange is already better than anything the prequels ever did.
>>
>>44300916
To his defense, Finn did seem fairly competent at everything a stormtrooper is supposed to do (shoot blasters and be in good shape), he was just kinda put in a lot of situations where his training isn't very relevant; fixing machines, flying ships, fighting with lightsabers, etc.
>>
>>44300848
>>44300874

Could a Jedi deflect slugs, or would they melt through the beam and essentially riddle the Jedi behind it with superheated metal?
>>
>>44300695

Ren's light saber is an old Sith design. It uses a shattered crystal and they put too much power into it. The hilt bits are venting excess energy from the blade.

It's like taking a 1.5 V motor for a school project and deciding it needs to go faster and hooking a 9v up to it.
>>
>>44300946
Yeah, they do precisely that.

Jedi just dodge instead of blocking though. Still more effective than a regular blaster at least.
>>
>>44300946
They can dismantle droids that lack shields with a thought, so I wouldn't be surprised if they can TK block solid projectiles.

And there's about a 0% chance that bullets etc. would just go through the lightsaber, any object not instantly destroyed is always repulsed.
>>
>>44300944
>fixing machines, flying ships
Those seem like the exact skills that would be incredibly useful for a storm trooper to have
>>
>>44300946
The bean vaporizes them normally.
>>44300954
At first I thought it was just adding a crossguard, which sorta made sense given how often that would have come in handy but I quickly came to that conclusion as well; his lightsaber looked impressive but seemed unstable and sort of improvised and flickering a lot.
An interesting visual metaphor for Ren himself; he was sufficient in a world with no Jedi but obviously a lot less in control of himself then Vader was.
>>
>>44300848
>Smarty pants stormtrooper attempts to shoot jedi with shotgun

>Jedi catches pellets with the force, dashes past and psssh nothin' personell's him.
>>
>>44300944
To be honest all the Stormtroopers actually hit things with their blasters sometimes. It's a big improvement already.
>>
>>44300985
You do know that Stormtroopers and Imperial Pilots are entirely separate careers, with next to zero interaction between the two fields?

Tie Pilots don't learn to shoot, Stormtroopers don't learn to fly.
>>

>>
>>44301003
>Tie Pilots don't learn to shoot
>all storm troopers don't get basic arms training
well that explains a lot
>>
>>44300985
Most stormtroopers (at least originally) are really only meant for combat.
None of the Imperial engineers or pilots seen in the movies are Stormtrooper-trained; each one had it's own training academy in the Empire, much like how combat engineers in real life aren't the same as regular infantry or jet pilots, and aren't "universal soldiers" of any sort.
I bet Finn knows how to field-strip a blaster but not take apart a car and re-assemble it.

Plus it seems these stormtroopers have some pretty strict dehumanizing training.
>>
>>44301048
Have you considered that the people in your cinema are idiots?
>>
>>44300884

To give them credit, only Jedi have the ability to use lightsabers to do those things: your average joe with a laser sword is semi-realistically potrayed as being out of their depth trying to use it to any effect when blasters are everpresent and a much better fit for those not versed in its use.
>>
Another thing about tho movie,
I thought that tie fighters where not pressurized, but at the beginning, fin helps the pilot escape and they're not wearing any space suits.
>>
>>44301064
You gotta admit the guy looks goofy.
>>
>>44300695

I'm still hoping he eventually becomes a good goi in the middle like his EU counterpart and Rey succumbs to the dark side.
>>
>>44301064
That's a lot of idiots, for a city where the main economic activity is nanotech.
>>
>>44301088
Original Ties require pilots to be pressurized.

These are new models, 30 years in the future. We've seen that no space suits were required, so we know that they are not.
>>
Was the movie good?
>>
>>44301064
The guy does look like a goofball. A lot of people won't notice that that's the point. Kylo Ren is a tryhard edgelord who really wants to be a badass sith lord, but he's a shrill nerd with emotional issues and he's nowhere near as badass as his idol in person, and he secretly can't bring himself to be as much of an asshole as Vader did because he's just not that much of an asshole.

The series is like an inversion of Anakin Skywalker's narrative, where instead of being this competent guy struggling against his emotions luring him to the dark side, he's this really incompetent guy struggling against his innate decency pulling him towards the light. He wants to be an asshole but he just can't do it, like the guy who writes CE on his character sheet but never kills or rapes anyone because he doesn't have the heart for it.
>>

Lore says no life support.
They are probably pressurized but they had a limited amount of O2

I had a "fun" stint in the Marines as a noncom; I learned HOW to shoot but it sure as hell wasn't my primary field of expertise and I got a lot less practice then your average rifleman.
>>44301088
Older TIE's were, but they also didn't have rear gunners and couldn't land the way they were parked in the film.
It HAS been 30 years after all, I wouldn't be surprised if they added moderate shields too.
>>
Do light sabers even have any weight? I thought the whole reason jedi could use them was because you need specific training/force senses to be able to be able to wield a beam of light without accidentally cutting off your own head

I bet they CAN take them off, but only with explicit permission from their superior, which is another good way of emphasizing how much they own you; no identity, no skills or knowledge beyond what they give you, no name, no freedom.

These stormtroopers were even more of a human gun then the Clones (whom developed a lot of individuality over time) were.

Grenoble, in the Alps.
>>
>>44301190

A light saber is like a sword, anyone could use it. Jedi had limited precognition and better reaction times so they could use them to deflect blasters and had more agility with them.

something something gyroscopes something magnetic fields

>>44299836
>How did Rey know how to use the Jedi Mind Trick despite believing the Jedi weren't real
She thought they were a legend. Given Watto's response to Qui-Gon's attempts to mind trick him, the Jedi Mind Trick is a pretty big part of the legend, up there with lightsabers.
>Why was Phasma in the movie when she didn't do anything?
Moichandizing!
>Why did R2-D2 shut down when Luke left despite having the only piece of information that could lead to his whereabouts?
Robodepression.
>Why did they include a scene with Rey wearing a fighter pilot helmet and whistfully watching a ship leave the atmosphere when her primary character motivation was to never leave Jakku?
Because she wants to leave, she just wants to leave WITH her family she can no longer remember. She's basically a prisoner to her own desperate hope, right down to keeping a record of the length of her "sentence"
>Why was Rey the worst character?
Because she was an entirely too "safe" character. Finn was a coward and fuckup trying his hardest to be someone else, Po was a bro, but Rey never once failed at anything. Sure, they justified her familiarity with the Falcon, her melee skills, and even softballed that last fight for her (Ben was seriously fucked up physically and emotionally by the time her got to her), but it still all came too easily to her.

She was still rather enjoyable, though, just the least interesting newcomer by far.
>>
>>44301264
Rey is a classic victim of Girlbrush Threepwood syndrome. They were too afraid to move in any direction so they just made the most boring inoffensive character possible.
>>

Goddamn he was.
Guy was this remarkably trusting hero who totally believer in Finn being a hero even when Finn himself wasn't sure.

Also, crazy good showing in his X-Wing as Black Leader in that first fight; he vapes like five TIEs in two seconds and takes out a bunch of ground emplacements all in one pass.
He's Definitely NuWedge.

>>44301400
Abrams said that was kinda the point; his lightsabers imprecise, he's making it up as he goes, he's heavily torn by doubt, he's emotionally not in control, etc.
He's mimicking Vader without actually knowing what Vader was like, idolizing a man who he never knew by anything other then legend and reputation and trying to live up to something that he doesn't have first-hand experience of.
>>
>>44301350
It is.The idea is, Guybrush Threepwood was a sort of goofy, dumb loser who bumbles his way across his adventure, saves a girl who turns out to be more competent than he is, and basically is a scrappy underdog jackass

The problem is if you told the same story with Galbrush instead of Guybrush (a female version of the character) people would call it sexist, because you're portraying a woman as an inept bimbo who stumbles around like a moron and eventually gets saved by the guy she was trying to help.

The point is that because people are very sensitive about not portraying women negatively, female characters often end up being boring because they lack flaws and human weaknesses.
