If you wanted to see the new Elf and Orc just say so.

If they can hold their own and not be a burden, there's no reason to deny any aspiring adventurer, no matter the age or gender.

Sure, why not, I guess. Might even be a particularly reasonable background for an adventurer from a society where women are expected to marry young and those who grow older without doing so have a hard time finding a husband or other place in society. I think that's been a reality in some times and places in the real world.

They do not carry the burden of a family with them, so they are univerally preferred. Exceptions being married pairs that adventure together of course.

It's a Japanese thing. Christmas Cake is a term for any woman over 25 who isn't married yet. The joke being, no one wants a Christmas cake after the 25th, ie after Christmas.

Women who aren't married and are over 25 have a significantly harder time getting married in Japan.

Nah, I just think she would have never really married or loved, due to some extreme circumstance like a sudden revolution putting everyone in panic.
After helping save grizzled veteran's beloved daughter from a kidnapping that occurred during the panic (he would have stopped them if he thought she wasn't safe at the time), she helps by acting as the group medic and second gun.
Then she confesses her love for grizzled veteran as he's shot in the chest and the now badass daughter guns down the cowards that shot her dad.
Sexytimes after healing give the beloved daughter a beloved little brother to train to become the world-saving badass he is in the sequel after the scum that killed his parents leads him to recruit his sister for some more asskicking.
There would be some controversy as whether to portray the former beloved daughter as sexy after so many viewers made her their daughterfu.
Ultimately The Bomb is disarmed and the day is saved.

A talented voice actress who was attractive, friendly and passionate about her work died recently. She was a bit older and worried about not getting married.

Japan is pretty harsh when it comes to days off work. Most people would rather tough it out than risk all the trouble that could come with it. The woman in question here was literally being carried in and out of the studio to record her voice she was that dangerously ill.
>>
>>43620991

...holy hell.

That's dark. God Dammit Japan.

As an aside: I imagine that means that Japanese Worker's Unions are basically non-existent/powerless? Or is it purely cultural?
>>
>>43621003
Cultural. Work is life, anon. On the other hand, Structure is life. So innovative people have hard time getting through..which explains why their last major tech innovation was the gameboy and walkman, with the rest being just refinement of western ideas.
>>
>>43621003
Japanese culture is terrible, they slowly kill themselves rather than lose face and to actually point out problems rather than just keep your head down and toil on is considered shameful.
>>
>>43621003
Largely cultural. Japan puts a lot of importance on working hard and not causing trouble for others. When you combine the two, you get the general expectation that you'll do overtime constantly, which means if you miss a day everyone else has to make up your already-heavy workload for the day on top of their own. Taking a sick day instead of toughing it out is often seen as being lazy.

Additionally, while you need a doctor's note to excuse absence due to illness in the US as well as in Japan, in Japan the note can't be retroactive. You need to haul your sick self to a hospital for an examination (at your expense), they give you a note, you send your boss the note, and that excuses you for one day. If you're still sick tomorrow, you need to do it again.

>>
>>43621258
Basically.
And since asking people to stop being molesters would also cause a scene, they just started segregating train cars.

That particular tendency is starting to fade a little bit these days, though. While they probably won't yell or call for help, now girls usually try and push their hands away instead of just freezing up and taking it.
Progress comes in baby steps, I guess.

As an Asian myself, I'm usually very reactionary when people start saying these things, but in this case, it's pretty much correct, yeah. Japan and Korea are a little more screwed than, say, China, because their cultural foibles are being reinforced by their total insularity.

Whereas China, HK, Taiwan etc are more outward-looking, and more likely to synthesise useful ideas from outside in time.

Innovation is always going to lag in traditional Asian cultures, and not just the Oriental ones either. Look at India, or the various Muslim countries in SEAsia.
>>
>>43621486
That's because their definion of "molest" doesn't require physical contact.

When people talk about Japanese train molesters, they aren't talking about somebody whose hand brushes your ass. They're talking about a full-on two-handed under the skirt grab squeeze and spread that would be at home in the first half of a porno.

That dude who got his dick out and started wanking off in the vincinity of one of our classmates on a crowded bus agrees with you there. It's not molestation without physical contact.

Though I guess we should call him a poor victim of self-molestation and hand him a bowel of cornflakes if we ever meet him again. I heard they're quite effective against the vice.

I love that writer's story about how he was invited to a banquette by the owner of a restaurant he used to be a regular at. The owner was about to quit and was throwing a final one for all his loyal customers and served all the specialities they had come to enjoy one final time.

Maybe it's just me getting older, but most of the examples of 'older women' in this thread still seem fairly youthful and hot. Unless you mean in comparison to the anime thing where the median age of competence is 15 and anyone over 21 may as well be in a nursing home.

On Japanese business culture: so why is no company just... not doing this? That sort of behaviour actually harms productivity and, as someone else mentioned, slows innovation. It seems that a saner company could just out-compete work-til-you-die-corp.

I didn't say China wasn't screwed. I just said it was less so than Japan and Korea in terms of how permeable it is to outside influences. Reading comprehension, much?

It's not very helpful to point at atrocities at use them as a basis for determining if a nation will survive/is capable of changing. All the stuff in there about poisoning their own people and using totalitarian methods are as true of the US, especially history, as they are in China.

The US gave its own citizens syphilis!

The US destroyed its own ecology!

The US threw hundreds of thousands of its own citizens into concentration camps!

The US incarcerates almost five times more of its own population per capita than China!

The US has practically destroyed its own indigenous population!

Notice how none of that is useful or germane?

I'm talking about relative receptivity to foreign cultural influences, comparing China and especially HK to Japan and Korea, with a side order of Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei.

The PRC is something like 65 years old. If it managed to commit a comparable number of atrocities as the US has in over two hundred and fifty years then it's rather impressive.

But on a more practical scale the Communist party HAS to throttle the flow of ideas into their country or people will start questioning the practicality of a command economy.
>>
>>43621892
Cover up the back of your neck.
>>
>>43622153
I'd argue that China as a socio-cultural entity is older than the PRC. Modern China is a pretty fascinating mishmash between pre-Communist and post-Cultural Revolution values.

The degree to which China still is a command economy isn't quite so obvious any more. These days, if I'm not mistaken, most control is exerted through regulatory mechanisms and state banks rather than having a state-appointed foreman and a commissar in every factory.

The Chinese people are more likely to be discontented with the actual stifling political climate than the state of the economy, especially if we're talking about the cosmpolitan Chinese.

What's good for them is that unlike, say, Korea or Japan, wealthy Chinese are actually incentivised to go overseas. Some of them come back with new ideas, and some don't, but if you're capable and hard-working, any PRChinese can leave and make it good elsewhere if they want, without too much stigma attached to that.

I've taught and worked with mainland Chinese who've come to the West to study or work, and I'm pretty confident that things will get better in a couple of generations.

I'm... not entirely sure the same can be said for the US or the UK.

It's the kind of discussion that Hot Older Adventuring Women get into.

How old is 'older', /tg/? To me, late 30s to 40s, but I've heard players dismiss a 30-year-old female NPC as being way too old to be bothered with.

Instead they all went to pester the 17-year-old farmgirl with the shotgun.

A lot of people see a 30 yr old and just think there's too much baggage there to really build a meaningful relationship; after all, why aren't they married yet? What happened to all their former relationships? Even in the "best" case scenario (she just never settled down) you have to give the PCs good reason to think she's better than a 22 year old that has the same excuse for not being with someone.

But especially in modern games, 30 is hardly a suspicious age to be with few attachments. Maybe she's divorced, or whatever. Single 30somethings who don't have kids are hardly a novel thing nowadays, right?

To be honest, I'd be quite leery adventuring anywhere with a bunch of young 20somethings. They're highly unlikely to have the experience and the skills needed to actually get things done.
>>
>>43622511
I suppose it depends. Single 30ish somethings are actually a pretty recent thing (barring wartimes). As cost of living goes up people tend to become introverts the older they get. But if we're playing as Ye Olde adventurers then any women 25+ and unmarried has something going on that prevented her marry at age 15-20.
>>
>>43622511
In modern games I would definitely favor the 27+ year olds. Kids tend to be too idealistic and they don't break from that idealism until around 25.

>Maybe she's divorced, or whatever. Single 30somethings who don't have kids are hardly a novel thing nowadays, right?

It's not, it just means the PCs are more than likely going to treat her as "just another NPC" rather than someone they could develop a relationship with. Most people just don't like older women that way, and when they do it's for a one-off "I banged a MILF/cougar" rather than the start of something lovely.

It's just a stigma associated with older age, it's the belief that she hasn't found the "right one" because she hasn't been looking, and was spending her youth having fun, only to realize she's getting older and the boys of her youth are still interested in the youth, so she looks for a guy to "settle" with and provide her a financial/emotional security blanket.

>To be honest, I'd be quite leery adventuring anywhere with a bunch of young 20somethings.

People just grew up faster back then.
>>

Adding to this, people are generally wary of divorced women because, surprise surprise, they're actually prone to divorce again in the future. People want a partner that's dependable, and a woman that broke her marriage vows to be with the "man she loves forever" just doesn't seem that dependable. After all, how sincere can her declarations to the PC when she did the same to some schmuck 10 years ago?

There's also the "plenty of fish" argument; why should a PC "sully" themselves with an older woman that has baggage (or "experience" as some might fluff it as) when there are women the town over almost half her age and twice as lovely?

The only exception to the "PCs don't want 30+ yr olds" is when the woman has power, but even then most PCs see it as a political or economic marriage, rather than the player actually thinking the woman is a good partner (hence why they often get paramours/mistresses after the fact.)
>>
>>43622610
>a woman that broke her marriage vows to be with the "man she loves forever"
People wonder why this is, but 90% of "romance" movies are exactly this. One or both partners are in a relationship, then break it off for their "true love," sometimes even cheating on the old love before breaking up with them.

And it's presented as a good thing, even the cheating. It's like wtf.
>>

You guys are weird because you are being offered the understanding that every single thing we do as a species, from what rotten things we grow to like to eat, up to the way we deal with each other, is an invention of a convention, and yet you shy away from this when it comes to a rpg setting, thinking that there is some kind of natural element to our history beyond "we're lonely beings, stuck between mindlessness and mindfulness, we make shit up to facilitate our own survival and mistake our fantasies soon for how things are supposed to be."

Shit, it's right there in front of you, every damn rule in every damn house for every damn game produced by every damn writer: we all make shit up!

Do unmarried older women have a place in adventuring parties?
If you want. That is it. The Satanists were right all along.

It's your own world, you can have whatever the fuck you want in it.

Last I checked the word dragon was used for bad rulers who harm their subjects and exploit everyone because they see themselves fit for ruling, no scales, no flame breath.

Its what they're expecting and it feeds directly into the "raised to be a princess" motiff they have as well. Its all sort of designed to fit together. Hell it even raised the pricing of their clothing. sadly it does teach the value that upgrading is a thing and who cares if you break the old one its crap compared to the new model.

Hm, yes, history isn't annecdotal and doesn't only reference events the author found appealing and in line with his or her "this is how it ought to be", no lip service, nope, none of *that* kind of realism, no exaggerations or lies at all.

Listen, you seem to be fine with being mentally stuck in your narrow definition of what constitutes realism, but you are missing out on the Greater Fun, to play outside of presentist folly.

If you read anything other than "realism" you'd see i said if the games not a stickler for realism then i don't care how old she is for adventuring. I did however question why she wouldn't magic herself back to a younger age if not for covenience purposes rather than aesthetics.

Actually considering the travel times in 40k, there's no real reason not to have some kids.

If you don't have time to raise them? That's what the schola progeniums are for. Rogue Traders on the other hand will probably raise their favorites right alongside them on the ships, which is how you get entire dynasties of murderhobo crime lords taking over the sector.
>>
>>43621234
That, and the cost of living that of course naturally follows the amount of work people are doing (it's fucking high, and you're not being paid your overtime, but the bills sure feel like you should be) is quite literally killing the country, too. Not just death by overwork, but also the aging problem.

No one has time to date, marry and have kids, let alone RAISE kids if they have them, so more and more of the population is basically doing nothing but fucking working till they drop or retire - whichever comes first.

This is part of why they focus so heavily on school in dramas and anime: In most people it's basically the last time you were actually a sentient being rather than an overworked exhausted cog that's just barely not yet breaking.

it doesnt matter the damage is done, you have a demographic shift as the population which only had one child ages out of the workforce they will not be able to have full replacement by the significantly smaller generation which was the one child hence economic problems, and you cannot fix it, yeah you can smooth it out afterwards by having more kids, but since you cant age people faster, your still going to end up with a top heavy population demographic at some point which will lead to a work crisis. This is further exacerbated due to cultural practices leading to female infantcide which has also stacked the population heavily onto the male side creating all sorts of problems.

Japan is absurdly fascinated with youth, which is why most important characters of note are in their teens.

Famous example: in Final Fantasy 12, Balthier (the dashing rogue with Viera companion Fran) was supposed to be the main character of the story. However, executive meddling or focus testing decided that at 22 years of age, he was too old to be the main character, and that's why Vaan was created and crowbarred into the game as the new main character and audience stand-in.

If you place the PS3 version, you get brother Nier, who is youthful looking and has a softer voice.

Father Nier is canon.

Just know that you wouldn't hawk it as a jRPG protagonist.

Early thirties here. Best I can hope for these days is to be the protagonist's dad, or an obstructive adult the youthful heroes have to get around.

I honestly don't think the damage is that bad, Chinese economy might get couple hiccups but won't collapse.
Not to mention that authoritarian government can respond to any crisis rather swiftly and reallocate resources as necessary.

I like the loli aesthetic, but most girls I've actually dated are 8+ years older than me.

Hey, at least women in their 30s will give you kids, which as far as I'm concerned is the selling point of getting married in the first place.

That's a pretty odd confluence of tastes, but good on you for not actually creeping on little girls.
