Sad story, set up to fail by the owners for draft picks.

No.

Read option was a meme defense. It took coordinators a little while to figure it out, but as of now they totally have. Mike Zimmer (then DC of the Cincinnati Bengals) wrote the blueprint of it against the Redskins several years ago.

It took other teams time to adjust personnel to abuse it. But yeah, as of right now there's no advantage gained by running a play action off a read option. You don't get single half field reads with wide open guys anymore, you get a normal defense to read. And these guys can't do it.

>RG3
>Kaep
>Wilson
>and to a lesser extent, Luck (not read option related but still a victim cuz he's field reading sucks).

Can someone explain why he hasnt been better? It cant all be his surrounding team can it? Look at Rivers.

Honest question. I always thought he was a good pocket QB on top of the read option memery.

It is him

He can't read defenses.
He predetermines who he is going to on big plays.
It literally cost them the SB one year and the NFC championship the other.

Same situation, same play, same mistake, had open targets both times.
>>
>>63293613
Yeah he was instrumental in beating the Broncos in his only Owl...

Oh wait no you could have benched him and the Seahawks still could have won.
>>
>>63293586

Harbaugh and his staff kept him at average level while still having playmaking ability. Now they have a transition coach and no type of system around him so he's floundering. Basically the $(ers are showing why they were a shit franchise for a long time and it's about to be another era of continuous head rolling
>>
>>63293580
seeing as he won that game, no.
>>
>>63293586

blame the yorks.

they wanted to cut down on the play clock violations so they went with an easy read (both offensively and defensively) offense and it blew up in their face. Kap for some reason doesn't have the nuts to speak up because you can tell by the look on his face that he could have called a play differently.

Taking kap out isn't going to win them games. Changing ownership who can get the right personnel to coordinate the offense effectively will.

Did Kaep actually get worse?

A few seasons ago that was a top 3 defense. He didn't have to throw much. The offense could focus on the run, and Kaep could make some completions, scrambles and draws.

Now their defense is average, the run game is worse, and he has a lot of pressure on him.

>>63295663
Yep. He was their red zone play caller from 2011 - 2014 and now he calls all the plays. 49ers were 30th in the league in the red zone with Alex Smith in that 13 - 3 2011 season, so it's not just the QB either.

anyone that isn't retarded will tell you cam newton is worse than donovan mcnabb ever was, and mcnabb had like two decent years and that's it

cam does not possess even mcnabb's pocket ability or his ability to read defense. again, not saying mcnabb was good.

as long as he has an elite defense to carry him and he doesn't outright lose games, he'll play in carolina. he's not better than any backup quarterback in the league though.

i think what makes people hate him is that he actually thinks he's good and he does his stupid ass celebrations and the "nigga" act at pressers like he's actually doing anything at all to help his team win. he doesn't understand that he's a game manager and has never been anything beyond that.

there's a reason why carolina started winning a lot of games when their defense got good, and not when they drafted him.

McNabb first 5 years average per season:
18 tds
10 int
2661 yards
485 rushing yards
3 rush tds
77.6 passer rating

newton first 5 seasons (rest of this season projected):
21 tds
14 int
3545 yards
640 rush yards
8 rush tds
84.0 passer rating

cams better than mcnabb was at this point of his career. he might end up having a few pro bowl seasons in a row and if he gets his INTs down he could be regarded as one of the top 15 qbs in the league.

he's never going to be considered an all time great or a hall of famer, but if he gets really lucky and has the right talent in a perfect year he might be an all pro once or twice.

his completion percentage, ints, and sub par passing yards are his biggest weakness, suggesting he just checks down a lot and doesn't actually have field vision. but mcnabb didn't fair much better until later in his career.

you can also say mcnabb didn't benefit from the pussy qb rules that exist now but that's really speculative.

>>
>>63310477

I'm really curious about how Newton would do with a decent receiving core. The ints are probably on him but I have a hard time faulting him too much for passing yards and completion pct when his receivers are garbage. He can throw a real nice ball sometimes, the that Ginn dropped was beautiful

I'm not saying it's 100% not Cam's fault but I don't think we can say whether he's the real deal or not for sure until he has someone he can throw the ball too

that guy was thinking college rules

if the ball is caught behind the line of scrimmage it falls under the screen pass exception in the NFL, so in this case if the receiver was smart enough to know this he'd just have to stand still while kap threw a bullet right at him (which i think is what most people here are saying)

>It has been reported that York and Harbaugh had a clash in the personality department. The animosity between the two was exacerbated by an alleged clash between them midway through the 2014 season when York supposedly walked uninvited into a meeting Harbaugh was holding with the players. When Harbaugh noticed York slinking into the meeting, he allegedly told York the the meeting was for "men only."[11]

>if the ball is caught behind the line of scrimmage it falls under the screen pass exception in the NFL, so in this case if the receiver was smart enough to know this he'd just have to stand still while kap threw a bullet right at him
But you can see after he snaps it he jogs up field. Furthermore throwing it under the Center behind the line of scrimmage, you run the risk of it being a backward pass and the receiver dropping it. A fumble in your own end zone could easily turn to a touchdown. If he throws a forward pass and it goes past the line, then all the other problems with the linemen come back into play with being ineligible receivers as they are blocking for a run play.

>>63321333
>He could have audibled and passed it
Then the defense is going to audible and your open receivers are not and now you're calling god knows what play while pinned in your own end zone on a passing offense that gives up sacks like the bag boy at the grocery store.
>>
>>63311595

They're both frauds.
>>
>>63323119
you can have a forward pass thrown that is caught behind the line of scrimmage, you know. it's not mutually exclusive.
>>
>>63323247
>you can have a forward pass thrown that is caught behind the line of scrimmage, you know. it's not mutually exclusive.

I never implied you couldn't however Kaep isn't in the shotgun, he's under the Center which means there's virtually zero variance allowed in where he can put the ball and a high degree of probability the ball will wind up as a lateral/backward pass or a forward pass past the line of scrimmage as he's <2 yards from it.

Furthermore there's no telling what your receiver will do here in fact you can see that the receiver goes up field. If Kaep throws it, what will the receiver do? The play apparently calls for the receiver to head up field. Does Kaep throw it over and hope Torrey stays where he is, what if he thinks Kaep will lead him but Kaep throws it back?

You can see here that both receivers are past the LoS. If Kaep throws, it's not going to be a screen pass. You can also see a blocker past the LoS, ineligible receiver, penalty.

Play looks fucking retarded yes but it was Geep Chryst's king of retards play calling that gets them safety'd. Three straight runs up the gut from your own end zone when the defense CLEARLY sees what you're doing.
>>
>>63321333
nah, no NFL defense would willingly allow something like that, regardless of how bad a QB is. They made more than one huge mistake that Kaepernick failed to capitalize on. Why were there only 10 men on the field?

>no NFL defense would willingly allow something like that

But they did. You can see the DB slide off Simpson and come onto the line. He knew he was leaving him wide open. There's another DB on the right side about five yards from Torrey, behind the linemen. What on earth is he doing there and what DB wouldn't check for a receiver on his side of the field? Then there's a Safety that you can't see in the image above who rotates and ends up within striking distance of Simpson one frame after. There's also another Safety back in the middle of the field playing goal keeper.

I'm gonna say there's a very high chance the entire defense knew exactly what Geep Chryst was going to call and would have easily covered those open receivers otherwise. They blitzed DB's and rotated safeties over. It's like they called the exact perfect counter to it because you can read Geep like a playbook. He called the same damn play over and over. Kaep wasn't playing like an unaware player, he was playing like a player told to do nothing about it. Any QB would check his receivers in that situation. Kaep really, REALLY isn't that fucking dumb but his OC sure as hell is and their coaching staff is fucking dumb enough to limit him so much so that he doesn't even bother looking for anything. This is the guy who was Ryan Leaf's OC ffs...

Have you seen how badly they have given up the past few games? I don't mean Kaep I mean the play calling. They are down by multiple scores with plenty of time to come back and they just run, run, pass, punt every time. Kaep's playing like a player who's told to do absolutely fucking nothing. And then they actually try one game every here and there to dispel the "tanking" talks. They just put fucking Gabbert in for the next game to make sure they lose now and in the upcoming games against three of the worst defenses in football. They're stocking up on draft picks. They just traded Davis for three late round picks.

Rivers is actually a good NFL qb and even during shitty years everyone knows he is legit. He runs offense himself like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

I don't agree with that.

Basically the 49ers tried to turn a mobile QB into a pocket passer.

But if they wanted that, they should have stuck with Alex Smith.

This is basically mismanagement of talent and a lack of vision from the top of the organization on down.

>>

>>
>>63293697

I think there's some truth to what you've said.

The running game with Gore, behind that beastly O-Line was the core of this team.

Without that I don't know how good Kaepernick would have been.

But at least Harbaugh got the best out of him.
>>
>>63293680

I'd have to look at the game tape to see if this is true.

>But that would hurt too much
>>
>>63324759
This guy knows. The only question is if they're doing it to just get rid of Kaep (Baalke wanted Dalton) or they're going to clean out the coaching staff too. Either way between the O-line, the playcalling and Kaep this is not an offense designed to win.

How about the fact that the 49ers didn't try and pick up and O-Lineman before the trade deadline?

That would have solved a lot of problems right there.

But instead it's all Kap's fault.

That's exactly the pattern. And Balke is part of it too.

Anyone remember when Balke said they were disappointed they could monitor Kap's off season work?

As if Kap did something wrong and was fuckin around.

When Balke knows it's against the CBA for teams to have contact with players in the off season regarding working out, practice, preparing for the next season, etc...

I've heard that its President Paraag Marathe who's actually doing all the leaking and he's more of a York lapdog than Baalke. Rumor has it he also tried to give Harbaugh a coaching manual based on his shitty sabremetric methodologies and York thinks he's brilliant despite never playing football in his life.

It just really sucks how much this team's leadership has their head up their own assholes, eventually York is going to have to see that if he wants to be the guy who gets all the credit for wins then he needs fire Baalke/Marathe and then get the fuck out of the way of their replacements.

Yes it is, but it's not nearly as speculative as it is relevant to this comparison. Fact is, the game has changed, and all the current QBs are benefiting from it. The only discussion really is just how much. I think Newton is aligning himself just right to have a McNabb-type career IMO.
