I've played on fields up north in early spring. The infields on most fields are still mushy from Winter. Changes the game dynamic for the worse. Gotta run slower/safer, can't slide, errors go up on simple groundballs. I'd imagine that a professionally maintained field would still suck in the winter. Also, pitching with a wet ball is asking for more hit batters, and in an era of fastballs consistently in the upper 90s, there would be a ton of career ending injuries, for pitchers and batters.
