more intersted in yellow, knight takes bishop, pawn takes knight, bishop takes pawn -> check, king moves to corner, queen takes pawn, checkmate
>>
>>69522844
nice one Canuckanon, but if queen takes pawn, then king (or knight) simply takes queen and white is roasted.

Tip: the solution is not a mate.
>>
>>69522844
The other black knight would take the queen though.

I'd take the black bishop, lose the white bishop to a pawn, take the pawn with the knight and then the knight can take either the queen or rook, both of which would be a good exchange for White.

Wait, no! Move the other white bishop so it can take the rook. The rook has nowhere to go.
>>
>>69522948
I'm sorry, I'll have to be an asshole and use chess notation to make sure it's all clear.

1. Bxe6 (White bishop takes the black bishop)
1...fxe6 (black pawn takes the white bishop)
2.Nxe6 (White knight takes the pawn at e6)

Black is forced to move his queen to save her.

The white knight then takes the black rook.

Nice one. But there are two problems.

First,

1.Nc7, Ke4
2. Re1, Kf4 is not the best answer of black.
White can mate immediately with 3. Bh2.

Also Nc7, Ke4
Re1, Kf4
Nd5, Kg3
Re3 is not a mate because the black bishop at a7 takes the Rook.

It's black's turn. If he played 1...exf6 the resulting game would be equal, as he would have eliminated the threat to his king.

No. You will also need to know the en-passant move, and see it in action. If you know that, you also need to know castling, when you can and can't do it, and the fact that if your opponent can't make a legal move, it's not a win but a stalemate. There, now you know enough to play.

Queen is forced to take bishop and force a draw.
>>
>>69541218

Well, the queen doesn't have to take the bishop. Mover her somewhere else towards the bishop, or move the king away. You lose the queen, but you were always going to. Then you can just send your king and pawn so the pawn will get promoted, or if the bishop takes it, the king can take the bishop, then take the other pawn. If you don't force the draw, how else can white win?

if he doesn't take the bishop, he either moves the King or the Queen (neither pawn can move). In which case, he loses the Queen for nothing.

Tbh this is why even for chess problems with Black to move, I prefer the board not being flipped.

Other than bxa3, White can reply with Ka1 or Ka2, then Nxc4 seems good for Black. But then I'm lost.
>>
>>69549582
This board is in New York City, btw. It's over three stories tall. Every Wednesday at noon, White and Black's moves are taken with a basket crane/boom lift. Each piece is 2-1/2 foot (76.2 cm) tall.
>>
>>69549604

so 1. ..Nxa3+
now if 2.Ka2 then
2...Rxb2+
3. Kxa3 Rb3+
4. Ka4 Ra2# (I hope all is correct)

Now if 2.Ka1 then Rxb2
3. Rc8+ Kh7
4. Rh8+ Kxh8
5. Rc8+ Kh7
6. Rh8+ Kxh8
7. h3 (or h4) Ra2#

(that was the fun line)
>>
>>69528491
Finally find my sportsfu and find out the news

:(
>>
>>69549825
the best thing about a chess sportsfu is that you can get really close pretending you are observing the chessboard (yeah right).
>>
>>69548636
>>69549798
Or 2. Ka1 Rxb2 threatening both Nb3# and Ra2+ followed by Rgb2#. The former threat is easily countered but the latter threat can only be countered by 3. R1c2 or 3. R4c2 (unless White stalls for time like you say, in which case Black mates with either Nb3# or Nc2#), whereupon Rbxc2 wins a rook. The thing is 2. Ka1 Nxc4 looks good too.
3. Rc3 Rg1+ Ka2 Rxb2#.
3. Ka2 Rxb2#,
3. Kb1 is retarded for obvious reasons.
This leaves 3. Rxc4 Nb3+ 4. Ka2 (4. Kb1 Rxb2#) but then I'm stuck.
>>
>>69549798
Also thanks for dealing with 2. Ka2. I guess White can only avoid mate with 2. Ka1.
>>
>>69549925
Also adding on, after 3...Rbxc2 4. Rxc2 Rxc2 and White cannot stop Nb3 followed by Rb2#. 3. R1c2 Rbxc2 4. Rxd4 falls to Rg1+ 5. Rd1 Rxd1#, so that's out too, but I don't believe that those are White's best moves.
>>
>>69549925
wait I've lost you
so, 2. Ka1 Rxb2
and if 3.R1c2 or 3.R4c2 then black just takes the c2 rook.

but if 3.R1c3 Rg1+
then 4.Kxb2

Unless I'm missing sthg black should play 3...Ra1#
>>
>>69550098
If 3. R1c3 Ra2 is mate, isn't it?
>>
>>69550098
Almost forgot:
>3.R1c2 or 3.R4c2 then black just takes the c2 rook.
Pretty much, unless I missed something.

Actually I did, since there isn't even a need for Rgb2 because Ra2 is already mate for most cases. I guess the best counters to Rxb2 are R1c2 and R4c2, but I haven't fully checked either option.
>>
>>69550157

can we talk about hikaru finally beating carlsen after like a billion (30+) tries in classical?

>>
Why wasn't Rashid Nezhmetdinov a grandmaster? He had a plus score against world champs and won some high profile tournaments in his time. I've heard that maybe it was because he was Muslim or something but not much info after that. Nigga was Tal 2.0 in a lot of respects, at least he seemed to play way more accurately than Tal.
>>
>>69550580
>Tal 2.0
>accurate

make up your mind

(sorry, cheap shot)
>>
>>69550623

I guess it was sorta silly to say of me, but what I mean is that Nezmetdinov was as crazy aggressive as Tal but also more accurate in his sacrifices and combinations. Tal was an all-around better player but Nezmetdinov could probably out-attack him.
>>
Fuck, I really, REALLY can't see shit without looking at an actual chessboard and playing out the moves on it.

3...Rcxb2 threatens Nb3# so White HAS to capture something. But 4. Rxc2 Rxc2 and White can't stop 5...Nb3#. Similarly, 3. R1c2 Rcxb2 4. Rxd4 Rg1#.

So the best really is 3. Rc8+ Kh7 4. Rh8+ Kxh8 5. Rc8+ Kh7 6. Rh8+ Kxh8 and Black wins next move. I guess that means 2...Rxb2 is better than 2...Nxc4, then.
>>
>>69550529

>>69550706
It's kinda late here, I'll have to look it up tomorrow with a board too.
>>
>>69550580
>Why wasn't Rashid Nezhmetdinov a grandmaster?
Because his Elo rating never reached 2500, that's why. As to the reason for that (according to Yuri Averbakh):
>Nezhmetdinov, ... if he had the attack, could kill anybody, including Tal. But my score against him was something like 8½–½ because I did not give him any possibility for an active game. In such cases he would immediately start to spoil his position because he was looking for complications.

In a nutshell, he was poor against players who actually knew how to defend.
>>
>>69550706
According to >HIARCS, with best moves possible it's a checkmate in 7.

1...Nxa3+ { #-7/25 } 2.Ka1 Rxb2 3.Rc8+ Kh7 4.Rh8+ Kxh8 5.Rc8+ Kh7 6.Rc2 Rgxc2 7.h3 Rb1# *

Nxa3 is the move you're missing.

yep. that was fast.

here is another one. White moves, it is a mate in 6 but only because the black has lots of intermediate moves.
>>
>>69553691
>>69553761

You're basing your moves on the assumption black Kxd4 but what if black moves Ra4 or Re4.

In case of Ra4:-
Nb4+ Kc5 2. Rxd4 Ra4 3. Rd5+ Kxb4 4. Rd4+ Ka5 5. Rxa4+ Kxa4

In case of Re4 it will be a bit longer for white to mate.
>>
>>69553761

>>69553773

2. Kxf2 Rc2+
3. Kg1 Rg2+

>>
>>69553847
I meant Rh3.
>>
>>69522801
>canadian

somehow i knew
>>
>>69553773
I admit that I had to use an engine. Ra4 does not work though.

So, to take it from the start
1.Nb4+Kc5
2.Rxd4 Ra4
3. Ke3 and white takes advantage of its pawns and king position.
Black ofc has to take 3.,,Rxb4
4. Rxb4 Kxb4
5. Kd4 and promotes the pawn.

Note that 3. Nc2 and 3. Rd5+ equally work for white.

Basically, anything works as long as all the pieces are taken off the board and all that is left is the kings and the pawns.

yep, that's all the moves.

True the pawn will be promoted. Did an engine analysis rather than Rxb4 it suggests Ra7 which leads to a long line but pawns get promoted.

>>69553994
1. Qh1+
2. Kg3 Qxg2+
3. Kf4 Qf3+
>>

I'm actually glad I didn't watch that one with Maurice "Madden" Ashley commentating. I enjoy his post-game analysis & interviews, but St. Louis needs to dial back on the near-constant engine-analysis.

White should have moved the knight to column 5 row 6. Sure it would have been taken by the pawn... but then White can take bishop for bishop making Yellow move Rook.

Now Yellow takes White Bishop with their own Bishop. White counters by taking with pawn (if they are dumb. Then Yellow Knight to take Pawn and be able to strike at either Rook or Queen.

Simple.
