Even with football, a 12-14 year old kid wanting to become a professional football player will get the "you'll never get anywhere, you should just study" reaction.
There's a mentality that to be successful you have to go to college, even if you're not seeking a career as a qualified worker. That's why everyone in Portugal goes to "pretend" college (arts and social sciences), because that's what you're supposed to do right? Wanting to be a tradesperson such as electrician, mechanic, plumber, etc. is frowned upon because you're not getting higher education, but it's a very profitable kind of job right now. One of my friends is a plumber and he gets more money fixing toilets than I will ever get as an engineer.
