The difficulty is somewhere else. Only those who top their groups get a direct qualification to the WC. That means you just can't have a bad result, as there's no safety net.
Just to give you an example, Spain was in the same group as France in the 2014 qualifiers. They had one bad result (a draw at home against Finland), and that was enough to put them in great danger. They had to win in France to top the group, and as a result, that was France that was put in danger by finishing 2nd (despite good results overall in the group), and had to go through an elimination round against the 2nd ranked of another group (Ukraine).
CONMEBOL group may have more high level teams, and the sole presence of Argentina and Brazil reduces the number of qualifying berths (as those 2 will always eventually qualify), but having several bad results is nowhere near as lethal as in UEFA groups. Typically, Uruguay had several aweful results against teams they shouldn't have lost at the beginning of the qualifiers, yet they still got to the WC as they also had many opportunities to redeem themselves.
Both zones have different hurdles to overcome.
