RIP. She basically invented modern day women's basketball. It really didn't exist on the map til she put it there. One of the greatest, if not THE GREATEST coaches of our generation or any generation.

Her son didn't coach at UT, at least not as head coach. Her assistant, Holly Warlick, took over Pat's spot. Tyler Summitt was hired as LA Tech's head coach and fucked one of his players there.
He fucked up, but it doesn't diminish the amazing accomplishments of his mother. Have a quick glance at her wiki page just to see some of the stuff she did. Not many coaches win the Presidential Medal of Freedom and 8 Nattys. Plus she was named the Naismith Basketball Coach of the 20th Century.
Oh yeah, and all 161 of her players 1) graduated, and 2) got to play in an Elite Eight game. Every. Single. One.
You guys can hate on women's sports all you want, but they wouldn't even be close to where they are today without her.

There is a very scary mystique around Alzheimer's these days, but it's been proven that the damage inflicted by the disease (brain cell choking protein plaques) is caused by atherosclerosis of the brain.
If you don't want to go vegan, fine. But along with your meat, eat a fuck ton of micro-nutrient- and antioxidant dense foods (legumes, leafy greens, any veggies, healthy starches). High intake of these show a direct correlation with reduction of atherosclerosis and thus lower stroke and alzheimer's risk, as well as lowered heart attack risk.
The more you lower meat and dairy intake, the better you'll be.

Alzheimer's is fucked up. It's got to be one of the worst ways to die, slowly losing your identity, becoming paranoid about everything and everyone, forgetting the people you've loved until you become kind of a hollow, empty shell.
I graduated from UT though, got to see her coach. She was a genuinely great person too, contributed a ton to the area. Collegiate coaches can have a much greater local impact than pro coaches, particularly with such a long tenure. She's definitely the best coach we've ever had in Tennessee, in any sport male or female, pro or amateur.

He's broken a few, and will probably break a few more by the end of his career. If she hadn't been forced to retire early most of hers would be nearly untouchable by this point. The ones he's broken-- rings, for example--have come after her retirement.
However, he'll never have the same impact on the game. If not for Summitt, Auriemma would be coaching Division III right now. For example, when she started coaching, they played a version with different rules and 6 players on the court. Teams would have 3 offensive and 3 defensive players, none of which were allowed to cross half-court. Summitt was influential in the decision to move to regular, 5-player basketball, and even testified in court about it.
Between 1999 and 2005, there were four seasons where Summitt's women's team drew larger average crowds than the men's team. She was also asked to coach the men's team twice during her tenure. Auriemma's own daughter once said "Everything my father has done in the world of women's basketball, Pat Summitt did it first."
Probably the craziest stat in my opinion, though, is this:
Most attended Kentucky Men's Basketball game: 24,480
Most attended Lady Vols game: 24,653
The ability to get that kind of attention for a sport no one cared about when she started is what made her special.
