I'd say that's independant of his quality as a player but it made him miss some key moments. It arguably cost France the 2006 WC and could have cost them the 1998 WC if not for a golden goal by Blanc in the 1/8th.

>>
>>69027088
Zidane was a great but hugely flawed player. Like many playmakers tend to do, he would often go completely missing in games - however, he had a habit of showing up when it matter (1998 WC and 2002 CL).

That being said, Zidane singlehandedly sabotaged his teams chances of winning another World Cup final, which is totally unforgivable. The last thing he ever did was lose his shit like a fucking manchild. Zidane had the ability to do something great every match, but he really only did it every other match. Overrated.
>>
>>69026161
desu I don't think a lot of people in France hold the WC 2006 against Zidane. First because he's seen as the man who gave France its first WC title. Second because back then he was coming back from retirement, on his last leg, and right before the WC started people didn't really expect him to be anywhere near as good as he was. His performance against Brazil was simply beautiful.
Also Materazzi was a cunt and I think a lot of people were happy he got decked regardless of the consequences.

>Zidane singlehandedly sabotaged his teams chances of winning another World Cup final

1. Zidane was basically the only reason that incarnation of the French NT was in the final to begin with.

The first thing is that even people who d'ont know/care about football would recognize him as a great player, and mostly because he was truly elegant. In a pure sportive aspect he had everything, first touch, vision, inspiration, a fully skilled palette of technical gesture. He wasn't this fast, but his control were always perfect, allowing him to always win 2-3m to his direct opposant. Can use his two feet and his head too...

Which led me to what I think of him. 10 years had passed, and I forgive him because he made what no one else did, he choose his moment to leave. I mean yes it costs us and his team the WC, but what he did was like the perfect end of the movie, I'm sure he knew exactly what he did at the moment, and I'm sure he did it on purpose, just to show that he's higher than the game, just to prove that he rule it and he can choose if want to give us this WC or not. And for this he's more than just an excellent player, he's god among men...

Zidane is the reason I started watching/caring about football.

The 2006 world cup was during undergrad, and I had a French roommate who was watching every match in our living room. My girlfriend of 2 years had just broken up with me and I had just got back from getting a ton of booze to get drunk, and after telling my roommate what was up he says "hey man, just come watch this guy play football for a second, even if you don't know anything about it I guarantee he'll make you a fan." That guy was Zidane, and I became a fan instantly.

Back in 1998 I was a 14yo kid who didn't know shit about football. I went to watch the final on the TV in the camping where we were on vacation with a bunch of other people. Against Brazil, everybody had their fingers crossed but the expectations weren't high. And then Zidane scores. And does it again. Everybody's mind was blown.

Zidane and Ronaldinho were truly one of a kind with their ball control. It's just fucking insane.

Obviously it's hardly the only quality that makes a player great, hell Messi BTFO's everyone just by being good at dribbling. But either way it was a blast to watch them and I wonder why nobody ever became like them again.

Fucking Zidane, I jizz every time he juggles the ball across the field like a madman, it's even better than the roulette trick.

I read the biography of the french manager at this time (Domenech), don't remember much thing about this episode, he just mentions that he saw Zidane, both didn't looked at each other and Zidane took his shower and waited in the locker. I could easily imagine that everybody left Zidane alone, it would have been stupid to confront him about this. Also it was a real shitstorm in France after the match TV, radio, and newspaper everybody wanted to know why he did this which led to strange scene where Zidane came on TV to explain what happened (also Zidane was and he still see as a really hy guy in France).

Listen you dumb yankee turd: nobody gives a fuck about the way your diseased shit culture relates to sports. Not only is Zidane one of the best to ever do it, but his red card is utterly irrelevant. >>
Zidane's performance against Brazil in 2006 is one of the single best international matches from one player ever - perhaps even one of the best in any form. He made legendary Brazilian players look like high schoolers. Zidane is the greatest of all time.
>>
>>69028704
That, and it's easy to forgive the guy who gave France its first world cup after scoring 2 goals against Brazil 1998, followed by the Euro in 2000.

>>69028837
And that. Domenech is almost unanimously seen as a clown and a glorified cardboard cutout pretending to manage a team that was managing itself under the influence of its veterans.
>>
>>69028854
And he did that at 34.
>>
>>69028837
I don't think people originally realized Domenech was shit. I mean he was succesful with youth teams for years.

Exactly. I remember watching that as a young teenager just in awe. He was such an unbelievable player.
>>
>>69028864
>the guy who gave France its first world cup after scoring 2 goals against Brazil 1998
I understand finals are literally the most important matches, but do not underestimate Thuram's semifinals miracle.
>>
>>69028987
I know, in fact Zidane wasn't particularly amazing during that world cup, even getting a red card in the group stage. But still, he did shine at the most important time, against the most prestigious adversary, and in most people's mind he really is the hero of 98. Hell, I think a lot of people don't even remember who scored the 3rd goal, or even that there was a 3rd goal.
>>
>>69029042
> even getting a red card in the group stage
Missing the Paraguay match where France suffered a lot.
>I think a lot of people don't even remember who scored the 3rd goal, or even that there was a 3rd goal.
Which is ironic since it was historical: it was the 100th goal of France in World Cup history or something similar.
Poor Petit, he was solid throughout the competition too.
>>
>>69029042
I honestly dont remember anything about that final besides Zidane headers and Ronaldo's strange condition which dominated the news.
>>
>>69028960
Hi communication was awful, I mean yeah he was taking all the pressure and attention acting like a clown and saying strange things, but this doesn't work for a NT the same way it works for a club. I think a NT manager as to drive passion within his communication in medias (like what did Conte before the match against Spain). Domenech was in war with media, and in a country were 3/4 of population don't really know anything about football it's not a great idea.
>>
For what >my flag and >this post are worth...

I think he and Totti are the true GOATs.
>>
>>69029042
I was 7 and it was Petit, it wasn't like it was some nobody
>>
>>69029084
Yeah, the situation was really different back then as well. After 98 and 2000 France was seen as one of the big teams so anything short of final was a disaster.
But in 98 it was something else, France had only one one Euro 14 years before and didn't even qualify for the 94 world cup. They also struggled all the way to the final against Paraguay, Italy and Croatia. Winning against Brazil seemed near impossible, and not only they pulled it off but they even made a 3-0 spanking. Shit was magical.

Not only did it made stupid faggot casuals think actual GOATs like Zizou are overrated, but made a brand of football so cancerous the whole sport changed for the worse, so now the game is only about either keeping the ball for as long as you can or play defensively and counter attack. Healthy knees, I'll give you that. Thus allowing longevity. It's also impressive how the guy is never injured.

But it's a little unfair comparing cr7's ability as a winger when r9 was a clinical striker and Cristiano started off playing on the wings for most of his career until about 3 or 4 years ago when he's become the go to guy to score tap ins and penalties with the occasional header.
>>
>>69032691
I think Cronaldo's goal record is all the more impressive when you consider he started out as a winger.

>a little unfair comparing cr7's ability as a winger when r9 was a clinical striker
It's also a little unfair to do the opposite.

In his prime there's probably no better pure striker than r9.

Yeah, why did I have to scroll this far down before somebody mentions El Fenomeno?

Players like Zidane are great, but they come and go. To this day, I have yet to see another player in my lifetime that is even comparable to Ronaldo. Henry was up there, at least for Arsenal. But Ronaldo was an absolute freak of nature, for both club AND country on a consistent basis.

You know that old joke
>the problem with Arsenal is they always try to walk it in
Well, the problem with Ronaldo was that he could and quite often would actually walk it in. The real problem was trying to get him to mess up or fouling him before hand.

That was it. You either fouled him or prayed he'd make a mistake because for 90+ minutes you were his bitch.
>creates chance for himself

He's right though, la Liga is a very long and stressfull league, every match is a battle.

Zidane choked in the 2006 final. I know you frogs say it didn't mean anything, but wasn't Zidane always the first choice penalty taker and would go first in shootouts? If he was there, he would have probably converted and the shootout would have been completely different
