Pretty much this.
It would really help is the us team could place high in a large tournament but that becomes one of those chicken or the egg deals. Getting third in copa might help but after that piss poor showing with Argentina I don't know if it matters.

The USA women's team is pretty nuts but nobody gives a shit about that, I don't know what their competition looks like world wide though.

>>
>>68858822
Because Portugal has a shit manager that doesn't have a clue about football. Called the sacred cows instead of actual in form players.
But the worst part is that he doesn't field the best players he called. He plays two wingers as full backs, when there's solid options on the bench.
He doesn't play the full Sporting CP midfield, which is really in form and they have been playing together for years.
But i don't care about those fuckers, may they get knocked out on saturday.
Portugal will win gold medal in the olympics. That's the real national team, those lads are really pleasing to watch. They play with passion, they play dominant football.
And obviously there's the under 17 european champions a couple of months a go. So yeah, the future is bright :)
The FA just needs to stop hiring managers without balls and go for a foreign one, which doesn't give him to club and agent pressures to play certain players like the last 3 turds that managed Portugal

sort of, but not really. You see all types in the recreational leagues.

but you should see some of the complexes we have, just for recreational adult leagues and huge tournaments for the kids and teens. 24 full fields, all maintained well. Most Americans think that the game should widen the goals for more scoring, because we can afford to just buy 48 new goals. You must have never played football, it's a fucking work out. Way more tiring than playing basketball, and definitely more tiring than playing eggball.

Play world football
>Running up and down a large field continuously
>Tons of micromovements
> Less break time

Or be a fucking eggball quarterback
>Line up, say hut
>Throw a fucking ball
>Be smart enough to run a team and know whats going on
>Take some punishment sometimes
>After play is over take a break and huddle up
>Repeat

I mean if you're going to somehow force that meme that eggball quarterbacks are nearly in the same athletic league as recievers/safetys, basketball players, football players, think about it. How the fuck is somebody who specializes in throwing a fucking eggball going to translate that into become a world class football player?

There's not an eggball quarterback in the National Eggball League that could play any other sport besides possibly baseball throwing a ball
>>
>>68863865

A lot of NBA point guards would be good midfielders or forwards if they had trained from when they were kids. They have great footwork/vision, they're fast, and they're usually the perfect height to be be effective soccer players (5'11"-6'2" range).

>>68867916
>What is american currently doing with all of their under 6 foot athletes?

>>
>>68873867
But NFL quarterbacks get the benefit of the huddle and knowing what play the team is going to run. He also gets time to adjust the formation prior to the snap, not to mention protection from his offensive line, which usually gives him time to find a receiver and make a pass. A midfielder in soccer has to figure out where his teammates will be on the fly, and he doesn't get any protection either.

But a midfielder in soccer is also a complete athlete so....................................................
>>
>>68873909

FIFA destroyed our best national league. During the 1920s, some of our clubs didn't want to participate in a cup competition because of the insane travel times (imagine a team from New York playing in California prior to passenger jet planes!) and high cost. So the ASL decided to just not bother. As a result, the USFA, working with FIFA (which was angry about the ASL signing European players), declared the ASL an "outlaw league". Then the USFA funded a new league to compete with the ASL, taking away revenue and interest.

So when the Great Depression hit in 1929, the league was too weak to survive the way that MLB and the NFL did, and the entire sport basically died. It didn't help that many of our best soccer players were Italian and German when WWII started either.

>Why America is not playing Rugby like a normal nation?

Because we got bored with it, and used it as a model to create football.

We got bored with everybody on the team doing nothing, except the guy with the ball, and anyone close to him waiting for a lateral, so we added blocking.

Then we got bored with just running or kicking the ball forward, so we added the forward pass and allowed planning in between plays.

Then we started killing each other during game play, resulting in the threat of a ban on the sport, so we added pads and helmets and made tackling and blocking rules.

Over time, the rugby that we once played evolved into the American and Canadian football that exists today.

it's because every sport that calls itself football originated from the same base concept of a ball sport played on foot rather than mounted on a horse. brits made that into association football (the actual name of their sport), we got american football, canadians and aussies have one, etc.
>>
we need to somehow bring soccer more into the public eye. Soccer is already mainstream. It's regularly on TV (and on real channels that people without a special sports package get, unlike ESPN8, "The Ocho"). A decent number of people generally understand the game, strategies, etc. If the national team is playing when people are off work, a lot of sports bars will fill up with people to watch. There are people that are willfully ignorant of soccer, but the same can be said of basketball, and LeBron is the most recognizable sports star in the U.S.

But soccer may never reach the popularity of handegg, basketball, baseball, or hockey, for one simple reason: Major League Soccer is a second-rate league. The NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL are all the best leagues in the world for their sports, and by a wide margin. And the only way MLS will stop being a second-rate league is if multiple teams end up with visionary leadership that is willing to overpay and lose money to attract top talent to MLS.
>>
the way I see it OP, the game itself has an intrinsic flaw (or ten). if the actual sport being played is interesting and entertaining, people will end up shifting towards it over time regardless of how retarded the setup is or whatever. granted, that interest might go towards the top european leagues before it does the MLS, but if you want public interest to grow then you can't be picky at first. when that happens, the next generations will stick with soccer even as they get older instead of remaining a youth sport, and that will lead to things getting better and more developed long-term.

so that means the real question is
>Why isn't the game itself nearly as appealing to Americans as our other sports?
>>
>>68878812
>Major League Soccer is a second-rate league. The NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL

only you play those shit sports of course you are the best on the world.(aside of basketball)

baseball is played all over Asia , the carribean, parts of south america, and even Eastern Europe
>>
Soccer will become popular when enough American parents prevent their kids from playing football.

LOLing at all these children saying baseball is dying. Their revenue model isn't based on whether people watch national broadcasts. It's based on ticket sales (they set new records every year) and local cable TV contracts, which have gotten enormous. The sports revenue and attention pies aren't finite, they get bigger, and baseball has never been more popular. If you've got an argument beyond MUH WORLD SERIES RATINGS I'd love to hear it.
>>
>>68878949
his point though was that americans have been spoiled because all of the leagues we watch in our favorite sports are the best leagues in the world for each sport.

so when trying to watch soccer, we'd have to reconcile with the fact the "the american league" and "the best league" aren't the same one, and it creates a cultural divide where there wasn't one before. this is something fans in other countries handle just fine but is something strange and relatively new for us. that's why the MLS seems caught between cultures, and people are always saying one thing or the other: either adopt the full european league style and play fall to spring, no playoffs or draft, promotion and relegation, no college system, OR drop all the european style names and songs, take the ads off the shirts and remove ties, and so on. people seem to agree that the way the MLS does things is "wrong", but there's no consensus on how things should change.

if soccer was something we made first and didn't branch off from euro culture, we'd stop trying to emulate it (and fail) and would just go about business the way the rest of our sports are.

This. Teams get 81 home games a year, and even a bad team can average 20,000 fans a game. Between ticket sales, parking, overpriced concessions, shirts, hats, and other souvenirs, Major League Baseball teams rack up a ton of money even before TV contracts come in.
