That's not the main reason why the Mazda won that year. The 787B was allowed to run almost 400lbs less than the minimum weight for the class.
The car itself was actually pretty shit. It competed in 20 other races and never had a victory besides the Le Mans (only one other podium finish). But because Le Mans is such a fabled race, people tend to think that the 787B was some type of godmachine.
