That's changing though. More and more kids here are playing soccer at a young age and watch the games on TV and grow up idolizing guys like Messi. Soccer wasn't even on TV here until the 90s so we're just starting to see the seeds grow. Give it time and things might just shift. NHL and MLB are declining in popularity among the youth while soccer and basketball are on the way up. There will be a shitload of talent coming up in the next few years I guarantee it. The system in place in the US does not allow for top talent to train and play against top talent at an early developmental age. There are club teams sure, but nothing like the academies you see in Europe. lots of people here play soccer as kids (5 to 10 years old) and then never look at it again once they get to middle school and start playing basketball/football/hockey/baseball. It's looked at as a sport for children because you just send them out there and they can all run around in a big pack chasing the ball. It's safe and easy for them to understand and doesn't require the fine motor skills you need to hit a baseball or make a jumpshot. Now, some of these kids will grow up and keep playing soccer, it's just that most of them don't. Not to mention, the pro league here is kind of a joke, so kids don't grow up wishing to be a soccer star like they do wishing to play in NBA, NFL etc.
