If an activity involves S,P,E or A it's a sport

If it involves C, I or L it's not a sport
>>

>If it involves C, I or L it's not a sport

So literally nothing is a sport
>>
>>68161080
Well, I guess that resolves this matter.
/sp/ should die now then.

Best cards coming through

Nah

poker is bad for health so no it isn't a sport.
>>
>>68161565
how is it bad for your health? the sedentary nature? you can just lift/train on your own time
>>
>>68161565
its good for the real health you need when your old
>>
I guess you could put it in the same category as Gaming. Sport: Maybe? Athlete's: Absolutely fucking not.
>>
>>68161589
Yes sitting for long hours is bad. And training/lifting has nothing to do with poker.
>>
I like poker, but it should not be considered a sport. It should be grouped in there somewhere with esports, I guess since online poker is technically an esport? I should probably go to bed.
>>
>>68161621
well playing poker has nothing to do with how you maintain yourself outside of the table

so the idea of it being detrimental to your health is irrelevant if you have a good regimen

not a sport anyway
>>
>luck shuffle
>sport

no
>>
>>68161681
You must not know that much about poker (not an insult).
Poker is largely a skill game, hence why the best players always win.
Though I won't deny that luck does factor on occasion.
>>
>>68162100

I've played in Atlantic City, Vegas, home games, charity tourneys and Indian reservations.

There is literally only so much you can do. I've seen enough to know that the best players do not always win. Some of the worst players I know end up winning more often than not because you cant out play them calling every step of the way just to hit one card.

And that card hits.
>>

Why?
>>
>>68161471
I think I prefer the standard packs.
>>
Game of skill, not a sport. Like golf.

Is there any state in the United States, where all types of gambling are totally prohibited and are illegal?
>>
>>68163204
Hawaii and Utah are the only two states that explicitly prohibit every type of gambling, including lotteries.
>>
>>68163396
Very thank you
Utah :)
>>
>>68163159
I mean rory can squat over 300 lbs and hit a little white ball over a 1000 ft. thats an athlete
>>
>>68163396
That's ridiculous.
>>
>>68163429
Well, one is a Mormon colony (Mormons pretty much ban everything fun) and the other was a totally unique and secluded culture until the 1950s. Both those states are shitholes anyway.

No, but it's a great way to make money.

the best players dont always win in the short term, but they will if they play long enough

variance is brutal and you can go through huge stretches where the better player is getting killed and the worst player is hitting hands

it wont last forever but it can go on for awhile
>>
>>68163514
The longer you play, the luck element levels itself off, giving way to skill.
Similar to backgammon, I guess.
>>
>>68163560
there are a lot of pro poker players who came from backgammon

the short term variance is what gets shitty players in the game. if it was only skill (like chess) then no casual people would get sucked into it
>>
But can an horse suck out on the river?

Las Vegan here. A gambling habit is awful to see. Watching people blow all of their money away because it's addictive to them is kind of sad, especially when you're related to them. I'm also for the "if they're stupid enough, let them do whatever they want" argument, but I can see why it is illegal everywhere else.

Also, indian reservations everywhere here have their own casinos on them, which are in other states even though it is illegal to gamble there.
>>
>>68163661
That's fair enough then, but banning a lottery seems excessive.
>>
>>68163661
what gets you into the game is the thrill and excitement of winning money

what gets you good is learning to not care at all about the result of any given hand

the addict wins a bunch, think it's because of his genius, and then keeps chasing that high without any regard to skill or logic
>>
>>68163661
You know what Las Vegas would be without gambling? A sad, tiny desert village.

Gambling is like booze, drugs, sex, junk food, or any other vice: something most people can enjoy but a minority of people get addicted to.

>Some of the worst players I know end up winning more often than not because you cant out play them calling every step of the way just to hit one card.

You've literally just described a poker player's dream. A draw-chasing calling station is one of the easiest opponents to get value out of over a long enough timeline.

You have to realise that an individual hand or session isn't that important to a pro. They're logging in tens of thousands of hands every month. It's the long-term trends that matter to them.
