well the in-story reason was that because they were still high schoolers, overusing their powers would backfire on their bodies like what happened to kagami at the end of the match against midorima. that's still bullshit though, because it's acting like the powers are more like magic rather than talent and skill, and it also implies they could use it endlessly once they've finished growing and then BTFO the whole world.

could not have said it better myself. one of the reasons I like haikyuu is that it's like the antithesis to that mindset. yeah, hinata and kageyama can do things that are too unrealistic, but nobody else does. even the other amazing things other people do can still be chalked up to natural talent and practice. it also flows the way a sports story should, and doesn't overdo the dramatic parts.
