People in Tamaulipas get kidnapped for shit all the time. The kidnappers are usually just the "gatos" (aka, the useless grunts) of a bigger capo. They are just in the business because they want to eat some bread and many of them don't know how to handle a gun.
Pulido is famous; it was obvious that they were going to put all the attention on searching for him. His fame meant that the kidnappers couldn't kill him; instead they could ask for a lot of money. However, as the guys who kidnapped him were just gatos, they probably didn't know how to handle the situation properly. Also, let's remember that Pulido's gf is a gun aficionado and an ex-gf of a capo; she probably taught him a bit about guns and given that he was born in Cd. Victoria, he knows that this kind of shit happens and that you must be prepared. The situation was perfect for him to escape the way he did, and if you consider all of this, it's probable that that's how it actually happened. But the chairos won't let the government win at least once; when they're finally doing shit right, everyone will immediately claim it was staged.
