A big aspect of American culture comes from the fact they have a massive landmass containg many many animals and climates and weather phenomenon that would kill you. As to why the other 3 don't crown the regular season victor, you'd have to look at the history of those leagues.

Not a lot of opportunity to go on hockey teams, especially when young. The speed skating tracks are normally not allowed as ice skating tracks and you have to be in a city to practice it. It's much more convenient to play something like football, field hockey or tennis, since there are fields for it in nearly every town.
Also know that ice skating isn't really that popular here as a sport, except for the northern parts of the Netherlands.
