Americans, how much do you pay to watch sports? I am reading something that says (as of 2011) that the most popular sporting events in the United States - the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA championship series, NCAA basketball and football championships, the U.S. Open and Masters golf tournaments, the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500 auto races, the Triple Crown horse races, and most Olympic competitions involving athletes from the United States - remain on free television.

Is this true, and do you have to pay to watch say non-Superb Owl concussionegg games? Here in the UK you have to pay a lot to watch all Premier League football, and you can't watch any live games without paying anything - we only get the World Cup and Olympics for free on TV
>>
Paying for sports is one of the most boomer things you can do.
>>
Paying for sports? Illegal streams are the only thing reddit is good for.
>>
>>67280021
Aren't all the England matches on ITV? But yeah it's a big shame
>>
My cable subscriber offers a basic sports package and since that's all I watch on TV I just get that. Get most american sports and most of the relevant premiere league matches of the week are shown on saturday sundays and monday on NBC sports. Really not that expensive at all since Im a single male without kids only paying for myself. Worth it not having to rely on shitty streams for important games in college football, nfl, and epl
>>
oh and most americans get basic channels like cbs, nbc, abc for free. and that is where most of the regular season NFL games are shown. another reason NFL is so popular. it is basically free to watch. College football on the other hand not so much.
>>
Handegg games are usually on Fox or CBS or NBC which are public broadcasting. 1 game a week is on ESPN which isn't free but comes in most basic cable packages

You don't get every game though. Since the games start in waves on Sunday, you get the one at that time period deemed most relevant to you (Fox and CBS do the day games on Sunday so you get two from each time slot; there is one night game nationally broadcast by NBC)

If you want to get the other games, there are pay options
>>
Primetime games with big teams are free, as well as the playoffs, however if you live in the south and watch a shit team from the north, you'll need a subscription fee to see all the games. As far as subscriptions, each league have their own packages generally over 100 bucks to see all the regular season games and another package for playoffs
>>
Burger here.

>do you have to pay to watch say non-Superb Owl concussionegg games?

Not at all. In America, major sports are broadcast to various extents on the networks. They are free of charge. Football is the most available. This is how football breaks down.

Sunday: You can see 3 football games on Sunday. There is a noon game, followed by an afternoon game followed by a 7pm game. The noon and afternoon games are broadcast by CBS and FOX. 7pm is called "Sunday Night Football" and is broadcast by NBC. These are all free.

Monday: "Monday Night Football". This is one game. It is broadcast on ESPN, so you do have to pay for cable to get it or go to a bar.

Thursday: The league has recently started broadcasting a Thursday night game. It's on NFL Network so you'd have to pay but it's generally a shitty match up between who cares teams.

The playoffs and Superb Owl are on network and are all free.
>>
Americans get sports on free TV due to the sheer amount of commercial breaks, I mean a 30 second advert on last years superbowl cost $5,000,000. and there were hundreds of adverts.

In the UK I'm pretty sure it's law that there can only be 15 minutes of adverts per 1 hour of broadcasting so there isn't a lot of room to make money on free TV, especially if it's on the BBC where adverts are banned completely.
>>
>>67280021
>Here in the UK you have to pay a lot to watch all Premier League football, and you can't watch any live games without paying anything - we only get the World Cup and Olympics for free on TV

I didn't know this and I can't believe it.
>>
>>67280062
Yeah I think that extends to the Euros as well

>>67280118
>>67280122
>>67280141
This seems crazy, football here is by far and away the most popular sport comparable to NFL for you guys yet they would never entertain giving us a few free matches, even with a basic cable subscription you have to pay extra to access Sky Sports or BT Sports (which have distinct packages so to watch all games you have to pay for both)

I'm actually researching this as part of my Sports Law revision right now, regarding broadcasting rights, and although we like to give Americans shit for excessive commercialism I'm very jealous that you guys get free games
>>
>>67280172
They can't even get the World Cup and Olympics or the Weather Channel without paying their TV license fee.

kek.
>>
>>67280172

Did you also know that games that kickoff at 3pm on a Saturday can't be broadcast in the UK because of some archaic law passed in the 60s when they were afraid nobody would turn up to games and just watch on TV.

90% of premier league games and like 99% of lower league games kickoff at 3pm on a Saturday.
>>
>>67280147
I suppose that is the main difference, the way advertising is allowed in the US compared to here means that costs that are recouped through advertising would make the price of advertising in the 15 minute break between PL broadcasts would be sky high and probably not work with the current level of money around
>>
>>67280021

Even for the Premier League, the first basic package from my cable company includes NBCSN which is the only channel to provide the games here under contract. With that, they also provide free streaming to any live game, including ones not on tv, including the games they put on USA and NBC.
>>
>>67280141
You get 3 NFL games in the afternoon broken out between CBS/Fox depending on match ups and local markets.

To watch non primetime hockey/baseball/basketball you need cable or a membership to nhl.tv mlb.tv nba.tv.
>>
>>67280254
Primetime baseball is regularly broadcast on FOX, no?
>>
>>67280308

FOX, ESPN, TBS, TNT all carry national baseball games at one point or another. The latter two usually come around for the playoffs mostly.
>>
>>67280178
It's probably part of why there are so many ads
>>
>>67280381
Baseball can be watched all season on FOX. Generally if you want to follow your team though you need cable. Where I'm from FOX Sports will broadcast almost every Brewers game.
>>
>>67280118

Actually a lot of college games are shown on ABC, Fox and CBS. NBC shows notre dame games.

If you're a fan of college football you'll definitely want a sports package with the ESPNs, SEC networks etc.
>>
>>67280193
this is sad.
even here we get free games.
>>
>>67280500

Same here. For the NY market we get the YES Network for Yankees games and SNY for the Mets. Channels 9 & 11 also have games from time to time.
>>
>>67280193
>90% of PL games

What world do you live in?
>>
>>67280642

Well there's 1 game at midday on saturday, then a 5pm game. Then like 2 sunday games.

I guess it's fine seeing as all the decent match ups get moved out of the 3pm kickoff spot so casual armchair fucks can watch too.
>>
>>67280714
He means your 90% figure is way off. Probably about a third of matches are televised
>>
>>67280714
There was one at mid day Saturday, one in the evening, 3 on sunday and one today, that's 4/10 at 3pm Saturday, or 40%, quite short of the 90% you said.

You clearly don't watch the sport. Go away.
>>
>>67280744

I guess I was exaggerating but it's still pretty shitty if you support a midtable team and you only get to see your team on TV like 3 times a year but you still have to pay like £50 to go to the stadium because muh premier league prices
>>
>>67280770

That's only because we're at the tail end of the season, it's not that common to have monday night football and 3 sunday games.
>>
It's only getting worse too.

CL used to be on free to air TV, as well as both the FA and League Cup. BBC would sometimes show Championship matches when they had the rights.

Companies like BT are more than happy to hide football behind a paywall because they seem to want to buy everything.
>>
>>67280021
is the Champions League not free in England?
>>
>>67280812
Well the FA cup is with the Beeb now which is something.

At least ITV is getting less sport. I'd rather pay than have to watch it via them.
C5 and C4 are better than them.

>>67280826
No it is on BT but UEFA and sponsors don't like the drop in viewing figures that has caused.
>>
>>67280826

It used to be on ITV until last year I think, now it's on BT sport, for the Champions League they tend to show one of the games each night for free though.
>>
>>67280839
wow that's crazy, it's free over here.
>>
You have to pay to watch sports in England? Is this before or after you have to buy a license to watch TV? What a shit fucking country. I'll never complain about commercials again.

41% of PL matches are televised, lower than the amount of most other 'big leagues'

Virgin recently complained that this violates competition law and it's being investigated
>>
>>67280873
But I'm actually a socialist. I seriously cannot believe you have to pay to watch soccer in England. I assume this is true for the Continent as well. Christ you people are cucked... Again, now I will never complain of commercials. I never knew to appreciate basic cable until a Yuropoor opened its mouth.
>>

It was fucking dreadful.
It's better now but they have shafted L1 and L2 even more than before. It will only get worse when Newcastle and Villa come down.

>>
>>67280853

that's not even that bad. In England their national broadcaster doesn't have commercials. In Ireland you have to pay the TV licence AND you get commercials AND you even have to pay it if you don't have a TV. and to make it worse there is absolutely nothing worth watching on our national broadcaster either. the talk show hosts get paid some of the biggest salaries in the world to talk to Z list celebrities. god damn i hate this country sometimes.

Why are American media corporations so powerful?

The 10 biggest media companies in the world:

1. Comcast (Philadelphia, USA)
2. Walt Disney (Burbank, USA)
3. AT&T (Dallas, USA)
4. 21st Century Fox (New York City, USA)
5. Time Warner (New York City, USA)
6. Grupo Globo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
7. CBS (New York City, USA)
8. Dish (Meridian, USA)
9. Viacom (New York City, USA)
10. Sky (London, UK)

>8 out of the 10 biggest media corporations in the world are American

How do we stop them?
>>
>tfw F1 will move exclusively to Sky soon

>>67280918
Because Sky just throw obscene amounts of money at it.
>>
What kind of Championship-level games are televised in England? I'm a huge Newcastle supporter and if they drop then I don't think I have any option to catch games in the Championship.

Like posted earlier, the US gets the Premier League included in even the most basic cable packages, Bundesliga as well. La Liga, Liga MX, and Serie A games are sporadically on BeIn Sports but that usually requires you to go up a level or 2 without needing a subscription based service like a NFL Season Ticket.
>>
>>67280887
>tfw BBC aren't going to have the Olympics coverage anymore (Or at least it won't be anywhere near as good)

>>
>>67280918
In essence, this >>67280935

The rights just from Sky and BT amount to over £7billion, and that doesn't factor in the overseas audience one bit. Say what you will about the quality of relative leagues but in terms of marketing and consumption there really is no alternative to the Premier League, La Liga rights are like £4billion total and that's with Real Madrid and Barcelona negotiating their own broadcast rights independantly
>>
>$70 per year for MLS Live.
>$25 per month for Bein.
>$65 one time fee for Euro 2016.
>$130 or so per month to get sport packages like NBC Sports, Fox Sports, and ESPN for everything else.

Being someone who loves soccer and hates shitty streams is the worst because of the money you have to shell out to watch. If a company rolled around and was like, hey, kid, wanna watch all those soccer games you love for a Netflix like fee? I'd sign up in a heart beat.

>>

Step 1: Have a strong currency
>>
You can get all primetime NFL and most NBA games except Monday Night Football for free with a basic tv antenna.

ESPN carries everything else an average American would watch and that costs like $15 a month.
>>
>>67280955

>>
>>67280950

Generally speaking there are teams that get quite a lot of their Championship games televised if they have a have a large fanbase, generally teams that used to be big like Boro, Derby, Forest etc. Newcastle will definitely join that list.

In England, Championship games are exclusive on Sky Sports.
>>
>>67280933
1. Start advertising
2. Allow free access
3. ??????
4. Profit.

It isn't hard faggots.
>>
>>67280973
It should be said they didn't mean to throw that much money.

The bid is a blind auction and on the second day both Sky and BT thought there was a 3rd mystery bidder entering. This was completely made up.
Sky didn't want to lose broadcasting over 50% of the games so just went fucking mental and bought as much as they were allowed.
BT got the remainders for free.

>>67280999
Discovery bought the rights for all of Europe. The BBC no have to go to them to get a deal which means it will not be as good. I highly doubt we will get anything like London 2012 ever again.
>>
>>67280141

Basic television with absolutely no package gets you like 10 channels or so, BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BB4, ITV, ITV2, IT3, Channel 4, E4, Channel 5. I think you might get some channels like Dave and Watch but I'm not 100% sure on that.

They're pretty much all just news and entertainment channels.
>>

True, but the demographic is shifting.

Many people are just paying for Hulu/Netflix and using free air antennas.

>>67280021
In the US, ESPN is included in every cable package, so everyone pays $6/mo whether they want it or not. Then you have the local networks which broadcast local teams (e.g. YES, which carries the New York Yankees and Nets costs $5/mo for every subscriber). That's a major reason why cable is so fucking expensive in the US (although Sky is slowly dragging up the price in the UK).

Sports like NFL are on over-the-air channels, but consider they have a shitload of commercials compared to football. Plus they get large carriage fees too from cable companies, despite being available for free over the air!
>>
>>67281023
The Thursday Night Football scam is one of the greatest things the NFL have ever pulled off.

1. Create Thursday Night Football and put it on the The NFL Network.
2. Wait until 90% of providers are signed up to long-term contracts to carry the NFL network at *massive* carriage fees
3. Double-dip by selling half the games to broadcast networks on a year-to-year basis (giving the implied threat of pulling the deal in case any provider doesn't decide to continue carriage) to maximise total revenue

The sheer balls required is amazing, ESPECIALLY since the TNF games are second-tier games to begin with.
>>
>>67282174
Oh, I also forgot the other ways they did it:
4. Save money by forcing the broadcasters to cover all the coverage costs of the NFL Network games, both the ones they cover and the ones they don't
5. Triple-dip by sell the online rights to fucking Twitter

It's fucking amazing what they have managed to get away with.
>>
>>67280839
>C5 and C4 are better than them
channel 5 is the cancer of tv. they have totally ruined football league highlights
>>
>>67282259
It's the usual cycle m8. Some channel looks at the BBC, thinks 'WE COULD GET SO MANY MORE VIEWERS FOR THESE HIGHLIGHTS', puts it in primetime, then slowly puts it later and later because no-one watches it, then the BBC gets it back. I think this is the third time this exact sequence of events has happened.

The only thing that may change this time is that the BBC is in a serious budget crisis that may never end because the governments wants to kill it.
>>
>>67280021
>Here in the UK you have to pay a lot to watch all Premier League football

We don't even have to pay extra to watch the Premier League, it's just part of basic cable and NBC lets you stream games for free online if you want to watch a team other than United/Arsenal/Chelsea/feel good team of the year (Leicester and Spurs right now). The main commentator, Arlo White, is actually from Leicester, so he's been getting pretty hyped up this season.

But the average cable bill is like $100 (£70). That's about the same price as the very top package in the UK (and, in practice, it's actually way lower due to included internet/phone deals which are charged separately in the US)

Something like third-quarters of US households subscribe to cable while in the UK it's something like half.

>HD HBO series (and on demand meaning you can watch literally any TV show at literally any time)
>SKY ONE HD
>HD Movies package
>Cool HD documentaries about nature and history

Enjoy your viruses and cramping around a shitty 14" monitor to watch a laggy stream faggot.

>b-b-but i know where to get pretty good streams
Yeah whatever. Enjoy your third world entertainment while I have glorious full HD and surround sound.

Maybe if you weren't NEET you could afford basic luxuries like this.

use it for vidya or netflix. cable is mostly commercials constantly plus you have to follow THEIR schedule.

bars are better especially for sports that are 1 or 2 games a week because its cheaper in the long run.

voicemail takes around 2 minutes altogether from start of selecting message to listen to to hangup. a text is less than 10 seconds.

outside of the southern states we are a quick paced group of people. there is a reason why coffee/caffeine is so popular here and the biggest drug used here.
>>
>>67282736
I can assure you it takes me longer to text a message than to leave a voicemail.

Especially if the message is complicated and requires more than 5-10 words.

Voicemail takes literally no time at all. It rings out and you leave the message. You were always going to let it ring out anyway, so that time isn't added on.

tl;dr you are mentally retarded

Texting is for 14 year old girls. I can't even remember the last time I sent a text. If you're over the age of 18 you shouldn't be sending texts to anyone. Just call them like a grown up you autist.

>90% Of First-Time Heroin Users Are White

>Now, nearly 90 percent of the people who tried heroin for the first time in the past decade were white. And a growing number are middle-class or wealthy.

the 14-30 demographic is the most important one for tech companies
that's where the trendsetters are

gotta keep up with them if you want to stay in business

No, it's certainly you. You're the one who engages in activities which are almost exclusively targeted and marketed towards the 12-16, female demographic.

Are you another Johnson? Is that what it is? You a nonce son?
>>
>>67280021
If you own a antenna or HD antenna you can watch the basic channels

In those basic channels include
NBC
Fox
CBS
All carry American football , cbs and fix carry baseball and nbc carries hockey sometimes . Iirc none carry basketball but that is okay

So yes you can watch sports for free especially if you live where you favorite team is located then then yes you for the local commentators unless you live in LA then you're fucked and some parts of NYC
>>
Who here has a twitter for the sole purpose of stalking females online?

Snapchat
Instagram

and Twitter, although slightly different is still 80% under 18s and the ones that are over 18 are fucking mongs. Like you.

not really

mine is for stalking footballers and football "personalities" (journalists, rerporters, managers, fans etc.)

i love seeing their reactions when their team loses for example or some major news break
(the butthurt on twitter after hummels announced he was going to bayern the other day was delicious)

what's your justification for instagram lad? you like to upload pictures of sports events?
>>
>>67283205
It's just 1 autist (in the actual, non-meme sense of the word since he obviously has no clue about normal social interaction)
>>
>>67283162
I am fairly sure none of those things are true.
>>
That's the thing, in the UK you have to pay to watch sports. In the US all the sports stuff is included if you pay for cable (which includes internet and/or phone) anyway.

So unless you want niche stuff, it should all be provided in your regular tv/internet/phone package which is like 100 bucks. For other extra channels you have to pay more.
>>
>>67282907
>But that’s changed

No it hasn't, we've just started categorizing light-skinned latinos as "white". This is like saying "well in the 1930s all the mobsters were colored, but now in the 1950s they're all white! What happened?"
>>
>>67283218
don't have an instagram account m8

why are you so riled up btw?
>>
>>67283205
Except literally nobody said that. Nice try though trying to make your argument seem more credible.

>Instagram
>Snapchat

Do you also use words like "swag" and "yolo" unironically whilst wearing basketball shoes and a backwards baseball cap? Are your trousers 'skinny' or 'slim' fit? Do you own an album by a black hip-hop artist?

I use a telegram. Only people under 80 uses phones. Crazy youngings.
>>
>>67283269
Texting is fine if you're in a meeting and have an urgent message that you simply cannot do without sending. And in that case, surely it would be worth excusing yourself so you can make a call?

Otherwise, phoning is 100% easier and quicker. And also not autistic.

Sorry for not being afraid to talk to people. I guess years of being NEET with no social interaction whatsoever has conditioned you into believing that text-based communication is safer for your confidence.

Kind of pathetic though. You should work on that.
