The only thing I can think SC has over NC in that department is an established and respected Military Academy, but The Citadel is nothing compared to the academies up north like VMI, Navy, and Army.

As a region the Carolinas are often overlooked for some odd reason considering the relative closeness of the population centers and the population in general. It's likely due to South Carolina being a largely forgettable state outside of it's Universities and the coastline, and Georgia/Atlanta being the largest city in the South.
