what i think happened (lots of speculation edition):
smith accidentally rear ended the hummer but didn't stop because he had a few drinks at a restaurant prior to that and was worried he'd fail a field sobriety test if the cops show up. he decides that there's not much damage so he'll just bounce. hummer starts following him, shortly thereafter a bystander says he heard one person (unidentified but presumably smith) yell 'Get out of here or I have a gun,' and then another unidentified person yell back ‘F— y’all, I’ve got one too.’ at which point the shooting started.
as far as i know the cops didn't recover any weapons from smith's car.
