I agreed with Ferrari's aggressive strategy.
It would've worked as long as Vettel created enough of a gap to make the next pit stop. but the super softs didn't give him enough laps. They should've been fast enough though being on two compounds softer than Mercedes. It just shows how far the gap really is between Ferrari and Mercedes. Ferrari couldn't build a 20 second gap despite being two compounds softer than Mercedes on the harder medium tyre.

Ferrari could've gone with the Softs after the red flag to get more laps in that one stint and then put on the super softs at the very end. But the delta between the soft and medium tyre isn't as big so you go with the faster super softs to try and build the gap.

that post is referring to Mad Amx and his tantrums about his pit stop and being stuck behind Sainz, almost losing it out of 12, and his little spin into 15 near the end of the race

>>
>>66357330
Verstappen is way more annoying but he kinda gets a pass because he's 18 and Jos has probably fucked up his social skills for life. HAM is by far the worst because he has pretty much no right to bitch about anything ever, and because he has legions of fans that claim that he never does this and refuse to call a spade a spade, because surely they're just "jealous" or "racist" or a "hater". There was a bit of that after Aus GP from amx fans and it worries me because I want to like him.

How often do people die in F1 racing? It seems like it must be the most dangerous sport on the planet. I've seen many gifs and webms of crashes and it blows my mind that people can survive some of these accidents. How many people die in a given year?

including other forms of racing usually like 0-2 people die at a high level every year, sometimes 3 or 4 but rarely more than that. for example i've watched racing intensely since 2005-2006, probably around 60-100 races per year in various series, and it doesn't feel like i've seen more than maybe 10-15 deaths live

During a crash are the drivers told to let go of the steering wheel?

A thread or two ago with all the crash webms it looked that way with the exception of one that held on for longer than the others. It must be such a difficult thing to remember to do during a potentially life or death moment.
>>
>>66359031
Yeah the impact can kick the wheels one way or the other which will translate to the steering wheel and can injure your arms. Also, if you have time, it allows you to adopt a brace position which can lessen injuries as well.

No, this is not exciting the current regulations are shit. This is not what the fans want to see! Overtaking should be easier and limited to DRS zones ONLY. You can't just let the regulations be what they are and have good racing occur naturally, you have to engineer it with tires, DRS, handicaps, reverse grids, new qualis etc.

What a joke why would anyone want to see stuff like this
>>
BTW it's pretty much confirmed that Verstappen fucked up his own strategy when pitting after Sainz.

I think the Toro Rosso boys are honestly just expecting too much from the car and are pushing it more than others without any real pragmatic regard for the tire deg (this is obviously a fault in F1 but it's something a driver should be able to adapt to). Now that the engineer cannot "make" the strategy for the driver and tell the driver how his pace is and how much life is left in his tires, it's just clear that Max fucked up. He was losing speed but was still lapping faster than most other cars on the same tire, and because he was feeling tire deg he decided the tires were done and had to pit, even though he was still faster than others around him.

What a hothead
>>
>>66359605
What is he doing?
>>
>>66359690
I don't think anyone was denying this, it's fairly clear that he went in when the team wasn't ready because he didn't make his desires clear and just complained.
>>
>>66359794

Yeah I don't mean just the failed communication, I mean that it was a failure in actual strategy as well. He felt as if his tires were so done that he needed a new set, despite lapping faster than other cars.
>>
>>66357923

>>66359846
Ah, fair point, although honestly you could argue that if he's lapping at that pace on tyres he feels have a lack of grip, putting him on fresher ones may have allowed him to make progress much faster; the sensation of losing grip is enough to probably bring caution to even hotheads like mad amx.
>>
>>66359992

One could argue that the Formula 1 of decades ago was equally stupid - and yet some people hold those years in the highest regard.

The Figure 8 stuff strikes me as similar to the Formula 1 sprint to the first turn: F1 fans love the titillation of the fear a crash, and because of that it's the most exciting part of the race. Except the Figure 8 guys do it all race long.

Though I can imagine having all those Figure 8 drivers so close to each other must be pretty upsetting for a person from Finland!

yeah, it was strange because usually the leading car of the two teammates gets called in the pits first. It's a bad result considering the Toro Rossos were running up in 4th and 5th early on.

Toro Rosso don't want to admit that they have a "#1 driver", the team doesn't want to be seen as favoring any driver over the other.

and being in the Red Bull Development program is the worst. They are always impatient and getting rid of drivers unless you turn out like Vettel. Even if Kvyat and Ricciardo don't perform, Helmet Marko & Red Bull have someone else waiting to take his place.

and it's nepotism since both are second generation drivers and their well-respected fathers have political power in the paddock. so neither of the dads want their kid to be the team's "#2" driver.

Verstappen will learn you gotta keep a cool head and stay calm during a race. and drivers in general need to stop bitching about team orders. If your'e faster than your teammate then use DRS and pass them.

Depends on whether you're thinking like royalty or like a serf.

As a serf, other than the outright expense (and perhaps an argument about which kart-driving monkey has the best hand-eye coordination), you're correct.

But the point of the "pinnacle of motorsport" puffery is there are people who love worshiping their supposed social superiors - the kind of folks who love being a subject of royalty (whether economic or inbred).

You have to remember that Formula 1 isn't primarily about auto racing, it's an racing-based soap opera about the follies and foibles of the ultra-rich (i.e., not the plebs).

Just listen to Sky's Ted cum and start farting in the pit lane during the red flag in Australia as his "gladiators" are walking so close to him! Almost as if they were normal people! Those "gladiators"!

So the "pinnacle of motorsport" is what people who either like to royalty worship, or else elevate themselves to racing-fan royalty relative to fans of other forms of racing, tell themselves.

Racing is racing.

(Caveat: In the pits, whether dirt track, drag strip, NASCAR, F1, wherever, the guys who turn the wrenches are pretty much the same: racers. Which is why I prefer to be in the pits rather than the stands.)

Yeah, pretty much he put too much power down too quickly and lost the rear, Nico couldn’t control the wheelspin. And electronic “driver aids” like Traction Control, ABS, active suspension, and then FRIC, have been banned for awhile.
But there are ways around it, the teams can disguise it with their engine software and mapping different engine modes. There’s “torque control” and you can change the power delivery. Everything now is similar to avionics fly-by-wire systems. The pedals used to be mechanically linked to the engine and brakes so you had to be careful how you pressed them not to lock the brakes or spin the wheels. But now the pedals are attached to an electronic sensor that measures your input on the pedal and translates it to an electronic signal that is sent to the engine/or brakes. So there’s gotta be more ways to alter that, so you can set the sensitivity really low or really high.

I was hype for the Mugello 12H just to see this faggot and Prokop race together, and the two Glickenhaus SCG cars that were in action. And it was cool seeing those Renault R.S.01 race outside it's one-make series Sport Trophy.

Both Glickenhaus cars retired with turbo failure. and that faggot crashed on the first lap and ruined the race. They should've let Prokop start the race. He can't finish a WRC rally, I think Monte Carlo this year was his last chance. Maybe he should try DTM next. Eventually nowhere is going to take him if he can't stop crashing. maybe FE.

But that's aero downforce, which varies with speed, and at the top of the loop the speed is low enough that the top speed "drive on the ceiling" aero numbers aren't available. That means g-loading downforce from radial acceleration has to make up the difference, and the compression g-loads for doing a vertical loop of any practical size are barely survivable.

They *can* be survived, but the window for success is very narrow: too slow into the loop and the car falls off the top, but too fast into the loop and the driver blacks out from g-load at the bottom.

It seems with these new power units the best way to gain performance is through engine software/mapping and the different engine modes. It’s like electronic warfare, with the right software you can gain performance immediately without having to manufacture and build a new part. The current rules around designing an F1 car are so restrictive that it’s the one area in the rulebook where you have some freedom.
I guess the engine software/mapping is probably the next step in evolution. The V10s and V8s through the mid 2000s were high tech and had engine software. Then with the 2.4L V8s and no refueling using engine mapping to run different fuel flow mixes became more important. Then Vettel with Newey at Red Bull Renault together came up with the exhaust-blown rear diffuser where the exhaust gases would blow over the rear of the car helping to increase rear grip and keep the car pinned to the ground. And it was mostly Renault that then came up with an improvement after with the off-throttle rear blown diffuser, where even when the driver was lifting off the pedal the engine would still know to send exhaust gas out the engine and to the back of the car; to help keep the rear downforce and grip. And this was controlled through engine mapping & software. Effectively making the car more user-friendly or easier to drive because of the increased downforce.

So Renault should get equal credit for Red Bull’s success, it’s a shame they broke up so quickly. When Red Bull were winning Renault never got any of the credit, it was all thanks to Newey’s genius chassis, and then when Red Bull were losing Renault got all of the blame. No wonder they gave some corporate excuse for leaving Red Bull because it was not an “economical marketing strategy”. You might as well go and make your own team.

it used to be. not in this current form.
F1 was always about the fast cars and high technology for the time period. F1 could always boast that it had the highest cornering speeds. It's rocket-science but on the ground, upside down airplanes. There was a time in the 70s when the Porsche Le Mans prototypes and Group C cars were more powerful HP than F1 cars, and at one time they had a higher top speed (mostly because of the Le Mans track has a long straight to hit top speeds).

A lot of the F1 lap records (same track configuration) are still held by the 2004-era cars. That's considered the "peak" era of regulations when the F1 cars were at their fastest. V10s, lots of aero, and sticky Bridgestone tires. and iirc you could change gearboxes and engines whenever you wanted, so they didn't have to last more than one race.

yeah pretty much this >>66360542.

In terms of stats like just pure straight line speed it's not like a Top Fuel dragster. and they don't do banking at 180mph like in turn left. It's the combination of the high cornering speeds and the locations. Certain tracks, like MotoGP don't go to Spa because a bike with a rider couldn't really handle the compression going up Eau Rouge. Nothing can take the S's at Suzuka or Maggots&Beckets (which the COTA S's are based on) like an F1 car.
>>
>>66360486
Foust and Tracy's speed through that loop was barely over 50mph, and yet at the bottom of the loop they were pulling 7 G's.

So I think whether a driver would black out and for how long depends on how badly they get the speed wrong. ;) (Riders on roller coasters will sometimes suffer momentary blackouts-grayouts in high-speed loops.)

I definitely agree that drivers might die from other effects instead, such as the bursting of the arteries to the brain, or if they're fortunate merely suffer paralysis from spinal compression.

Though a few drops off the top from going too slow would certainly lead to a quicker implementation of a closed cockpit.

Tilke should get right on this.

and that's why Michelin didn't want to make a comeback with a new F1 tyre because they refused to design a tyre that degrades on purpose. Which is what F1 wants. and now they are the top brand in sportscar racing and dominate Le Mans. and they don't need F1. and Pirelli are feeling the marketing backlash because F1 advertises that your tyres are shit. But the restrictions placed on Pirelli by F1 means they can't really develop the best possible tyres that they are capable of making.

Gee I sure wonder why Renault never got much of the credit for their wins.

Oh wait.

Renault almost managed to singlehandedly throw away Vettel's championship on two occasions. In all 4 of their championship-winning years, they had a weaker engine, yet in 2011 and 2013 they were carried by Newey's aero dominance and in 2010 and 2012 they could've won so much more easily without Renault's exploding engines or alternators.

yeah I get what you're saying.
F1 wouldn't need gimmicks like DRS and crappy tyres, new formats etc, if they had genuinely close racing. Focus on fixing the core regulations on how you design an F1 car; so we can get closer racing. Now you see overtaking only because there's such a huge difference in the performance of the cars/power units. It's like you only get passed because my car is so much shittier than yours. Vettel or Hamilton can have a bad start and easily make their way up through the field to the podium.

These new power units were supposed to attract more manufactures to the sport and instead it's still the same big three plus a struggling Honda. And the gaps between the teams are even further apart. The competition was closer during the previous 2.4L V8s.

I don't necessarily think it should be so that if you have a faster car, you'll be able to pass a slower car. We've seen this so many times in the current regulations - Kimi fucks up and is last, ends the race where he would have finished anyway. We've seen similar rises with Hamilton and Rosberg as well. Melbourne in particular was interesting because you could defend and overtaking was hard. Cars out of position and actually being able to defend is good for racing. If Melbourne had a 1 km DRS straight, Hamilton would have been back to 3rd or 2nd after 2 laps.

Plus thanks to Hamilton and Kubica now you can't even really protect your line anymore so "defending" in a DRS zone is basically positioning your car once and hoping that the car behind with 20 km/h temporarily higher top speed doesn't breeze past you

I don't know why FIA thought that their most technically advanced and expensive PU regulations would interest new manufacturers, especially when these regulations are going to be in F1 for like 3 years anyway. You could argue "road car relevancy" but isn't that what WEC is focusing on anyway and F1 really isn't supposed to be an ad campaign for a manufacturer anyway (even though it is). Next they'll probably introduce Pirelli road tires because Pirelli requests more relevancy to their road car business.

Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race – I don’t remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

what are their answers reeeeeeeeeeeeee

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

>SV: Can you repeat the question?! Yeah, I remember the question. I think it depends all on how the monkey grows up these days. I think it’s a different generation of monkeys that Niki was talking about probably compared to monkeys we have today. Obviously there’s a lot of buttons on the steering wheel, probably too many but I think for us, we grow up like that, it’s a different generation. I think if you put a modern phone in Niki’s hands, I’m not sure he would know what to do – sorry Niki. I think it’s what you get used to. For sure, when I started, for example, in Formula One, there were a lot of procedures I had to learn, a lot of buttons I needed to know how to control etc. But it’s part of cars nowadays. If you jump into a normal road car, there’s also plenty of buttons but in the end the most important bit is the steering wheel, turning the car left and right and the accelerator at the bottom. I think the basics haven’t changed and that’s the important thing, that the sport remains as it has been many many years ago despite how many buttons you have on the steering wheel

>NR: I’ll make this a bit shorter. I think we need to just make sure that the sport stays simple for the fans, that’s the most important thing. The direction, it’s all great, technology fantastic, hybrid power, buttons, everything, that’s all great but we need to make sure that for the fans it stays simple enough. That’s something for the medium term future, that we need to keep an eye on. That’s it

it's interesting how i like what nico says on paper but listening to him say it annoys the living shit out of me. i really can't stand the guy personally

i like him, even if he sounds shill-y at times.

To me, it's harder to determine whether or not someone is genuine through mere words alone. Demeanor, inflections etc all add so much more to the way a person expresses their thoughts.

Nico strikes me as being extremely fake. It's easy to see that in person, but nowhere near as much through text alone unless you're already biased against him and know what he's really like.

consistently the funniest driver out there. why did seb develop a great sense of humor when he moved to ferrari?
>>
>>66363089
He always was silly. Just ask James Allen about how much people loved him while he was at Toro Rosso.

Red Bull's PR scheme was awful for him, and Mateschitz coddled Wobbler so much that Vettel couldn't do anything about the fact that they didn't get along at all.

>>66363028
probably MWL, but Ferrari does look very close in race pace tho they are still btfo in qualy

He has always been funny

Thx bro i hope your not shitting me
>>
>>66363089

He was always funny, it's just that it wasn't portrayed as much as he was le evil brat at Red Bulll and Webber was le GOAT reasonable man (even though he acted more like a child than Vettel). He also toned it down himself in public because he knew it wouldn't fly that well when half the grid and fans hate you for winning.

He was also acutely aware of how much people hated his domination, especially during 2013 which is when he decided to just go yolo with the Pole-to-win streak and disregard everything else.

It's what happens when you get raised in a richkid paradise never wanting for anything. Nico is actually a very smart guy and whatnot but its just the way that he speaks and emotes is so fake or whiny. Mostly because he's spent his childhood and teenage years around exclusively fake or whiny people with a lot of money and probably has no idea why fans can't really relate to him.

Hamilton's tantrums according to the media however are just part of his "winning" character, reasonable frustrations - he hates to come second and it shows - that's why he's a THREE TIME FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPION©, Martin! He's just hungry ;) because he grew up middle class in a first world country ;))

After Seb's epic 2008 Torro Rosso win

Reporter:
>"this must be the best day of your life."

Vettel:
>"You obviously weren’t there when I lost my virginity."

With the right changes it could be good. I think it's worth a second try because the format could be great fun.

The way Nico sounds and the things he says remind me a lot of Trudeau, for any Canadafags in here. They're both eloquent speakers and have a lot of good/smart things to say, but they both have such an air of arrogance/self-importance about them. Trudeau is way worse than Nico tho, I actually like Nico.

Here I was thinking it was so bad that it brought forward a power shift in F1 management. Now they are doubling down in the dumbest way possible.
