What's the justification for this, especially at a public school?

An extra $6m/year toward actual education would probably go a long way
>>
And you would lose all the extra money/recognition that the basketball team makes for the university. Probably exceed 6m in Michigan State basketball t-shirts sales a year. Big picture here. $6 million is a drop in the bucket compared to what they bring in. Same as football.

Both those sports literally keep the entire athletic department afloat and still push merchandise sales to make extra money.

Not to mention all the extra money from tickets and sales if the team is actually good, hence why you hire a good coach.

Would be interesting to see the numbers on that

Shut the fuck up, commie faggot.

If you don't like it, you can go to Europe and suck all the dicks you want, queer.

The University of Alabama's revenue from football alone was $47 million in 2014. And they didn't even crack the top 5 most profitable programs.
>>
>>66322904
Because the basketball team sells well more than $6mil of clothing, tickets, etc.

And the link, so it doesn't look like I'm just making stuff up:

i'm not sure AD and educational funds are comingled. Moreover, except in certain cases, a strong athletic team brings in way way more than any of those salaries.

Not really. Only a handful of schools really focus more on sports than academics (Alabama and Miami for example). A lot of the schools with successful athletic programs are also great academically (Duke, Stanford). For the vast majority of universities, athletics are an afterthought.
>>
>>66323349
Wait, US universities are not supposed to be private and generate profits?
>>
>>66323397
with the exception of a small handful, you are precisely correct. they are non-profit organizations.
>>
>>66323397
No, they aren't. For-profit universities are almost all shit, and they have a horrible reputation because all they do is rip off poor people who don't know any better. There aren't that many of them either.
>>
>>66323332
You're retarded many of these universities are giant and sports are many times less valuable than the education part, even at big sports schools. Duke has an annual budget of 4.5 billion.
>>
The sports coaches are the highest paid state employees in almost every state. The Navy football coach makes more than the highest ranking 4-star general in the Navy.

It's hilarious how fucked up the priorities are for these state-run and state-funded ''''''universities.''''' Private colleges should do whatever they want, but public schools should be about academics.

It's not like any of those profits from merchandising and ticket sales ever get back to improving academics or learning facilities, they just end up spending the money on more state of the art gyms and training centers for the athletic department. Most academic departments at public colleges are still totally underfunded and outdated. The profits never actually come back to help actual students.

>the coach being paid a lot means that they put sports first

Are you seriously implying that the Navy prioritizes football over, you know, the Navy?

>It's not like any of those profits from merchandising and ticket sales ever get back to improving academics or learning facilities

They do. Alabama offers insanely generous scholarships to good students from out of state, more than most state schools do. Alabama has 174 National Merit finalists, more than almost any other public university. The acceptance rate has been plummeting too. They're able to do all of this because of their football program (and because kids in Alabama are dumb, let's face it).

Enjoy not being able to find a job with your degree in a useless field of study my friend.

Most Colleges have become grades 13-16 now, it hilariously bad.
>>

The amount of money the sports programs make (especially Kentucky with basketball, North Carolina/Duke with basketball, and SEC schools with football) more than justifies it. North Carolina (UNC Chapel Hill, specifically) and Duke in particular are the perfect example of how sports can help keep a school competitive academically, they're both among the best in terms of academics and in basketball.
>>
>>66323583
It's just because it's a very competitive postion that they need to pay a lot to attract a good coach which is very important for their valuable sports programs.
This is the same thing as those people who say "Why do athletes make so much more than soldiers?"
