They don't have that much money and a lot of their players are as average as they come. Best part of their team is their defense, but Höwedes and Nastasic are injured right now, which is pretty devastating (although Höwedes was shit this season).
They have a lot of players who aren't exactly terrible, yet fail to provide something exceptional ever (Geis, Goretzka, Choupo-Moting).
They play without a forward as Huntelaar is absolutely awful at anything but finishing. Sane is extremely talented but has been in a slump for weeks because he had to carry his team's offense through 2015. Meyer is extremely hit or miss as well, emphasis lying on miss.
They also seem kinda unlucky with transfers, buying players who did well outside Schalke at reasonable rates with said players completely imploding once they arrive at Schalke (see di Santo, Sam, Jurado, Szalai).
Generally their fans are pretty demanding. I have numerous friends and relatives who are Schalke fans and whenever some player leaves the club they are "glad he's gone" because "he was shit anyways". What they don't seem to realise is that they won't get a near equal replacement for a player like Matip with the market being this inflated.
