Basically, the score for both legs was 3-2 at one point. Away goals are the tiebreaker.
So, when the other team conceded an away goal, they effectively went from 1 down to 3 down because scoring twice more to tie at 4-4 would mean they still lose on away goals.
I don't see how golden goal can possibly be worse than pens and away goal rules.
