Because basketball today is more like tennis than it is like basketball of the 80's and earlier. It's extremely boring through the first 45 minutes, and the last 3 are fucking riddled with timeouts. It's even worse than the end of an NFL game. The season is also too long. Carmelo Anthony sits out for multiple games because his knee hurts little.
I enjoy playing basketball; it has a great combination of finesse and physical requirements to succeed (coming from someone who's tall but not gigantic). I just think of the NBA as more of a 'show' than a sport, though.
