They are still businesses. Public ownership doesn't change the fact that you're in business and you want money in exchange for goods and services.

Nope, the difference with other teams is that Barcelona for example doesn't have an owner who wants to make a profit. The owners are thousands of individuals, (such as myself), who pay a membership just to support the team, without getting anything in exhange except seeing the club win or lose.The money these clubs make goes to paying the people hired to run the club or to make the club more competitive, it doesn't go to a chairman who decides if he wants to invest in the club or on any of his other businesses

I don't dispute that the money isn't paid out to external shareholders but kept internally but it still operates exactly like a business.
What does Barca do that is anyway different to Manchester United, a club on the New York Stock Exchange? They both sell tickets to fans, do advertising deals and make money from TV. They both buy and sell players. They both pay high wages to the best players etc.
The ownership model is different but they are operationally identical.
