We do, and we were surprisingly competitive back in our Olympics when we got given a wildcard spot, beating China who were a very competent team despite being on the decline by 32 and losing to an excellent Spain side by a very narrow margin.
However confusingly and sadly the people in charge of funding the sport failed to recognise this as our side seriously punching above our weight and cutting literally all financial support from the state. Since then predictable the standard has rapidly declined ad the team have barely even been able to afford hotels when competing in international competition or even insurance for our star players (Deng in particular, but also Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Joel Freeland and others), which has seen us lose pitifully to minnows such as Iceland and Bosnia without any hope in the near future of improvement.
It really is a sorry state of affairs since there is some geniune untapped potential for GB to be reasonably good at basketball, if not on the level of France and Spain immediately but at least to be in the top 30 in the world if the government even remotely gave a toss about supporting it.

It's just not popular in the UK.There are basketball courts all over London, I think it's just played for fun by inner city blacks though, they know the chances of getting to the NBA from the UK are few and far between with the poverty funding and lack of public interest.I'm guessing not many of them see it as a viable career choice, unlike football.
If somehow a British Dirk arised, I think it would do the sport a lot of favours in the UK.

Possibly, though I don't see why it should be so difficult to market the sport particularly from some of the strong showings by our players at the Olympics. Basketball's a relatively popular sport in high schools but the infrastructure beyond that level's almost non-existent.
Even despite the comparative lack of interest compared to rugby football and cricket I think just some basic funding would go a long way for basketball in GB.

Where I'm from I've never heard of anyone playing basketball. I don't even know the specific rules or anything. Nobody cares about it.
It might be played in big cities though (they tend to be more globalised).
That being said girls play a similar game called netball in school traditionally. In the same way girls also play rounders in the summer (which is basically like baseball).

To be fair with the type of hits you do in football the pads are sort of necessary. The helmets are literally designed to give you CTE though, they need to change those
