I agree with you on everything, but I think the reason I like him and you don't is because we think of his utility differently.
I see him more as an in-the-crease to corner bruiser that meshes things around to create chances for the people he's pared on a line with (Vatrano, Beleskey, Connolly earlier in the season -- all people that can shoot well)
I literally never expect him to score, and he mostly does off deflections and rebound put-aways in the crease.
I think you are expecting more offensive production out of him than you should. That's why the Panthers hated him, because they expect him to be an offensive weapon given his size.
Gotta know how to use your pieces, and I think he's done well this year because Claude recognizes that.

i don't think he's an entirely useless player, it's just that when you give him top six minutes, which he consistently gets although technically i guess slotted in on the de facto "3rd" line, he is overmatched. his usefulness is exactly what you said: he needs to sit in front of the net on the powerplay. apart from that, he's not a particularly skilled or high tempo player, and is consistently overmatched against the fast and physically strong players in this league. he's a guy you throw on your 4th line and put in front of the net. he just doesn't do anything offensively well enough to be a guy that is in the top 9 of a good team. he does not cycle the puck well for a guy of his size, and he is not very strong for a guy of his size. again, as i said, not only that, but he does not think the game at a high level either, so it's not as if he can compensate for his lack of pure skill with savvy. he's a very mediocre forward that has good reach and leverage as a result of his body who can occasionally toss a garbage rebound into the net. the thing is, there are a ton of more useful players who are capable of doing that if you tell them that that is what they need to be doing.
i don't like the player, but i think if used correctly he can be ok. but he will absolutely never be in the top 9 of a team that does very much damage in the playoffs.

connolly's problem, to me, is time and space and his ability to release the puck quickly. in contrast with a guy like vatrano, who conveniently is right there for us to watch, he is effectively the opposite in terms of shot mechanics. connolly needs a lot of time and space to get his shot off with any kind of velocity and accuracy; vatrano doesn't even need to be looking at the net and he gets it on net somewhere around the shoulders of the goaltender and with a ton of power. connolly has a very poor release but a very hard and accurate shot. the reason he scored a ton in junior hockey is because he played against 3rd pairing dmen there where he had infinity time to pick his spot and get off a rocket. at the nhl level, he does not, and he hasn't changed much apart from getting heavier and stronger since he was 18.
