I know Liverpool are probably still among the greatest in the history of football but if it weren't for Hillsborough and the resulting effect on its players they probably would have continued their dominance into the 90s and beyond.

it's pretty much agreed it was the best italian team ever, so Italy basically lost all of its greatest generation in a single day
Leeds. Refballed out of a European title, last won the league in '92 and had football change massively the next year, managed to do well in Europe but lost out just as that skyrocketed in terms of finance.
Every time they have won something they've done so at a time where football has changed massively the season after. Same for Everton.
