Even the bookies had MVG as an odds on favourite to claim his second World Championship, but a truly stellar performance from compatriot Barney has blown this tournament wide open. The top half of the draw is now a total crapshoot, with Barney, Snackpot, Snakeshite, Chizzy & even Lard Lad able to make a decent case for their presence in a Worlds final. The elephant in the room (competing with Snackpot to be the largest creature in the room), is of course Taylel. An unexpected derailment of the Autism Express has kept Philth second favourite for the tournament (with Gando now favourite following his demolition of VvdV), as there will always be doubts as to whether the replacement Barney service can do the job of the green machine. Caravan man faces a tough semi-final against the winner of the Gando/Wade QF, as both men have impressed so far, but first he will need to overpower fellow sex-fiend Jelle Klaasen in the last match of this evening’s session. Before that, we open with Peter Wright taking on Dave Chisnall in what should be a close, competitive encounter. Match two sees the closest this year’s Worlds has got to a surprise package, Alan Norris, facing the resurgent Mark Webster, with the winner meeting Taylel or Jelle Klaasen in the QFs. That match last night was so close it was actually a tie: 15-15 in legs. Thank you based set play.
On the subject of set play, this is the one area MVG will have to master if he is to become the next Taylor-style dominator. It's notable that out of all the majors he failed to win in 2015, two of them were set play tournaments (2015 Worlds and the World Grand Prix). Barney's experience prevailed as his timing for the big outs and big scores was far superior to the World Number 1's scoring and killer outshots.
I just had a look at how MVG's done in set play since his first PDC major back in 2012, and it's not a particularly good record by his standards:

Exactly. It'll kill off complete jobbers like Midget Webster but for better players it doesn't do that.
When MVG misses doubles, that's when those better players hit the outshots. It's happened in every single game of the three-tournament streak and I'm sure it happened in the two 2013 events as well.
Once he's able to manage that style into a way that works for sets, everyone else is fucked.

This is from the Professional Darts Corporation, on the BBC they show tournaments from the British Darts Organisation.
At some point a few players split from the BDO because they could have more TV exposure and more money away from the BBC. The PDC is now the bigger organisation with the better players. And it's the 2016 World Championship because the final is played in January.
