They both look like shit.
The old one made no fucking sense. Stars on football badges were to represent success in tournaments. You know, like World Cup earns you a Star every time you win it.
Those stars mean fuck all and literally have no meaning. It made them look more "elite" than they actually were. From the aquila, to the Latin, it was all pretentious bollocks to make them look better than they were.
The old one is a hark back to their original badge and isn't completely egocentric.
