Hockey players get beat the fuck up like 3 nights a week for 5 months or more, and some of them play into their 40s
The season really starts August 1st when training camp and preseason begins and doesn't really end until February when the super bowl happens, so it's really 6 months, not 4. Also you bettet start working out and getting into playing shape probably in May because if you show up to camp fat and nasty you are liable to get cut as the NFL does not guarantee contracts so if you don't make the team that year you don't get paid even if you have a contract that says you get paid 10 mil a year or whatever.
So if they aren't in the middle of the season, they are usually working out hard hours a day to stay in top shape. That's basically your job in the offseason.

For me it's desperating having to wait from late May to mid August when the football season it's over, so I get the idea.

Usually guys take a month off for surgeries or vacations. Then they start up. Train hard for about 4 months, preseason starts then re loop
End of season - vacation - train - regenerate final surgeries - preseason /season - end of season
Minicamps 3-5 weeks Preseason could be 5 weeks, then season 16, then post 4 weeks so 30 weeks

I played both, higher injury rate in football. Heavier men that plant their feet into turn=more knee injuries+getting hit on every play.
Don't get me wrong, I believe hockey to be the superior test of physical endurance, skill etc. You have an 82 game NFL season and literally none of your original team is going to be around half way through the season.
