You may only post in this thread if your country has a chess player in the world top ten.

Also, Carlsen, Giri, Kramnik and So are currently playing in the world's strongest open tournament.

Reporting in, apparently.

How many medals do they award for cross-country skiing-related events? When will Norway be good at relevant sport like soccer? Isn't there that kid that plays for Madrid?
>>
>>64391325
He has been a mainstay in the group between the 2700 border and the top ten for a long time, but I think the 2013 World Cup was his breakthrough event.
More recently, the London Chess Classic, in which he gained 11.5 rating points and finished shared first with Giri and Carlsen.
>>64391363
The London Chess Classic was mean to him. Four losses and five draws.
>>
>>64391385
Quite a few medals.
It depends on your definition of "relevant". For instance, cricket is more relevant than, say, American football.
He's highly overrated.

it's so brilliantly stupid
>>
>>64398539
I love when Carlsen plays Aronian. We are watching pure greatness. I haven't been so intrigued with watching matches since Kasparov (Armenian and Jew) was around. Truly a time to be alive.
>>
>>64399482
Carlsen himself has said that Aronian is the player who has outplayed him the most times. It would not surprise me if Aronian won the Candidates, but it will be tough.
I consider all the qualified players to be equally likely to win, depending on form, perhaps with the exception of Svidler.
>>
>>64399525
I used to watch chess tournaments with my uncle but recently moved out on my own. Where do you find out about times, dates and places to watch the matches?

2700chess.com is a good place to start. If you scroll past the rating list, you find a list of current and upcoming events.

Perfect. Thanks. Do you know of any good sites to stream tournaments live?
>>
>>64399572
Chess24.com streams most of them, and has good commentary. Most tournaments in which Carlsen plays are also broadcast on Norwegian TV. How high is Aronian's status in Armenia?
>>
Always used to hide these threads because OP wouldn't post on /sp/ if Carlsen was 2nd, but I've been wondering: what the the key attributes needed to play chess?

He is legend status. Hundreds wait at the airport for him when he comes and visits Yerevan. He is the second coming of Kasparov for us. Comes to the chess schools and teaches the kids. Great dude.

Pic unrelated but incredible that this Carlsen kid is so high up. It's a pity that Kasparov isn't around to play Carlsen. Would be interesting.

I suppose the performance of the Armenian team in the recent Olympiads has much to say. Aronian has led you to three gold medals in the last ten years, the highest number of any single nation after the turn of the millennium.

Equal number of points. Carlsen won the tiebreak.
>>64399683
He is one of my favourite players of all time. Game 5 from the 1963 WC match is a gem.
>>
>>64399694
Mine also. I copy his strategy often. Better to defend than to play risky. I rarely lose. So many people have no idea how to play against a defensive strategy. Ends up with a draw or me winning
>>
>>64399715
Playing Petrosian's defensive style agitates average chess players so much.
>>
>>64399715
>>64399726
You must be careful doing that. It's not just to "copy his strategy". It's very easy to get bad positions if you try.
>>
>>64399750
Well. I just play chess as a hobby against average players. I understand what you mean if I was playing competitive tournaments but what I do is good enough for my level of play

Wei Yi is coming for him
>>
>>64399136
>13yos can be grandmasters
>>
>>64407190
Wei Yi has scored 50% against three players around his own age and rated below 2500, losing the first round game against a relatively unknown 2470 from India. He has a long way before he's a threat to Carlsen.
>>
I don't get it

These grandmasters must know every strategy there is in a game of chess, so how do they lose to one another? They must recognise "oh he's deploying X, I'll counter with Y" with the other guy going "oh he's deploying Y, I'll counter with Z"

Is the game won in the first move or what?
>>
>>64407539
It's impossible to memorize every possible game continuation. The game is a draw with perfect play from both sides, but white has a greater margin of error before he's in trouble.
>>
>>64407574
Maybe I need to watch a game between these guys to see how a game wouldn't be decided in the first few moves, because in my mind it'd be the first one to let themselves get initially backed into a corner
>>
>>64407603
Usually, they have their opening moves prepared, often 20 moves or more. If you fall into your opponent's prepared lines, you're usually in big trouble, but normally, both players will be out of prep around the same time, and the middlegame begins.
>>
>>64407656
Oh so both will run with an opening strategy to see if the other will fall for it, but normally both will play through it and then it's more of an open game?

That actually sounds pretty cool
>>
>>64407683
That is more or less it. If both players know the opening well, you can get games that are following opening theory all the way into the endgame.

Guys, what's your opinion on Eric Hansen (aka "Chessbrah")

He is a bullet phenom, 2nd only to Naka in online bullet chess. I have seen him outplaying Caruana and many other GMs in bullet. And he often plays (and wins) 1 minute vs 10 seconds time odds against strong players. However he struggles to get a spot on the top 200 list.

What does that say about Go then, which has even more variations greater than chess than chess does over tic-tac-toe?
>>
>>64407683
There are literally opening strategies that are famous and common called "queen's gambit accepted" and "queen's gambit declined" based on what the opponent decides to do, with each outcome leading to various legitimate games. The point at which you "de-rail" from the easy, known formula of the opening moves takes well over a dozen turns.

Wei Yi lost his fourth round game against another teenager. The Chinese is now on 1.5/4 against 2450-rated opposition. Both of his losses have been against Indian players.

>>
>>64425545

It's mostly because only one or two percent of active chess players are women. The numbers you find on the list are consistent with this.
