I just suggest watching games and posting in the game threads to ask what is happening. Most /hoc/ threads are actually filled with people who watch the sport and don't just meme shit. And if you watch the games featuring Canadian teams (except for Toronto) you will get many serious posters.

Most championships in history, also last Canadian team to win it all. However it's been over 20 years since they have won. This year they seem to have a good team, I'm cheering for them and I'm a Canucks fan. If you want a team with a lot of tradition this is a good one to pick. Also not sure if the French/Quebec aspect will appeal to you or not.

They are one of the original-6 teams meaning they've been around forever (along with Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit and Chicago) back when the league only had 6 teams. They have historically been a shitty(well, average) team actually, only 4 cups won. A lot of people cheer for them because they're from NY but at the same time few people hate them.

The Islanders were probably a meme team in the 70s and 80s. Just a couple of years after getting into the league they made it to the finals and then a few years later they won 4 in a row. However since the 80s onward they have been shit. They made so many bad moves that you could write a book on how not to manage a team based on their stupid moves.
I think they now have an exciting team that I can see many people supporting.

The Bruins are an Original 6 team, so they have plenty of history. Right now, they're in somewhat of a transition phase where they're still competitive but completely overhauled their roster from last season to this season. Despite being a Boston team, they still have one of the most likable star players in Patrice Bergeron. They also have the tallest player in league history in Zdeno Chara. Up until this year, they were primarily a defensive team, but have actually become pretty good offensively. Boston as a whole has a good hockey fanbase, but fans can admittedly be obnoxious.
