To be fair, both Di Maria and Kagawa could have easily been successful at United.
Kagawa was unlucky that RVP became available in the same transfer window and since Rooney was still good, he never really got the chance to play at his preferred position for an extended period of time.
Meanwhile Di Maria is a great, albeit a chaotic player and he just never fit into van Gaal's retarded philosophy of passing it backwards or hoofing it to Fellaini.

In terms of defending the league has been on a down swing for about 6 years. It's not ike the attackers are getting better. Any truly world class striker (Suarez, Messi, Lewa, Ronaldo, Neymar) would drop 35+ goals a season easy because the league cultivates brilliant athletes who are often tactically inept and incapable of reading the game efficiently.
