Fighting is dangerous. Everybody has known that since the dawn of time. The steps that have been taken to reduce the role of dedicated enforcers have been good in terms of reducing the unnecessary harms. But there is no reason to ban it on principle where everybody involved is a consenting adult.

It's pretty much tolerated because the game used to be physical as fuck. Teams needed big hulking blokes to beat up the other team's players so they wouldn't smash the shit out of the smaller players.
It is almost like a deterrent. A team's skill players won't be hit as hard if they have a bodyguard to protect them.

It's a sport where emotions are high and your opportunities to get pay back for a dirty hit or play are limited by the rules of the game. Hockey can be an incredibly dangerous sport considering the sheer speed and size of these men moving around on a sheet of ice. You need a deterrent for dirty players and plays. The ability to make a player answer for his actions is absolutely integral to the game. You get rid of fights, injuries will skyrocket. They don't have anyone to answer to, they can get away with a lot more borderline shit.

This. Fighting serves as a deterrent to truly dangerous behavior that can occur with sticks, etc. The fact that someone might beat your ass is far more effective than the threat of two minutes in the penalty box.
