I don't know how much extra he would get for getting to the Olympics, but he will be on the IRB Sevens World Tour or whatever it's called before the Olympics.
There are rugby sevens tournaments that happen throughout the year in different places, and the players are professional.
The pay might be similar to the Qld Cup pay, but I've got nothing really to base that assumption on.

Rugby is a club sport that isn't nearly as intensive and is much easier to join (they don't let everyone in of course)
Also it's not so much of a special snowflake, it's one of the more popular sports on campus. My school has won a few national titles.
Rugby is growing decently fast at the US collegiate level right now. We have a new national tournament that is starting to draw larger crowds, the final this year drew only 20,000 but considering the tourney isn't very old that's deffo a start

Well Rugby union is almost dead in Australia. NRL had to give it a lifeline in Isreal Falou to keep the ARU from folding a few years ago.

Union and sevens are the most popular at the collegiate level, with I think sevens being the most popular overall since it's the Olympic version. They showed a few rugby world cup games including the final on national broadcast television this year which was I think the first time that was ever done.
