Within the same state or states having the same name.

Example. Even though they play in North Carolina, people in South Carolina should pull for the Panthers, Hornets, and Hurricanes, because they are both Carolina.

Started having this discussion in the Chargers/Broncos game thread yesterday.
>Third generation Chargerfan
>Owner acknowledges 75% of business comes from SD. Willing to alienate that "to preserve 25% located in LA"
>literally trying to argue that 25% in a market that hates anything from SD is worth more than 75% from the market the team has called home for 50+ years.
SD and LA hate each other. As a lifelong fan, who has laughed a cried and screamed until I lost my voice, all over this team, it's hard not to take them moving personally. Hell, even if they don't move, it's hard not to take them wanting to move personally. Staying with the team if it moves to LA makes me feel like I'd be going full kuk while the Chargers take the BBC of LA while I'm forced to stay in LA and just watch. I'm of the opinion that abdicating my fandom of the Chargers, and even considering choosing a new one is more about self-respect than being disloyal. What do you /sp/artans think? I am a bad fan if I don't stay with them, even as they move to a different location that already has an entrenched rivalry with their current home? And for the record, before anyone tries saying it has anything to do with their record, I'll go on the record as having stayed with them during the dark days of the Kevin Gilbride, Ryan Leaf, 1-15 season of the decade before this most recent 10 years, as I would if they said they have no interest in LA and are staying in SD. This is purely about the relocation.
>>
>>64069951
nah man they are fucking you guys over hard

fuck them
>>
>>64069951
No, you're allowed to hate teams that move. Baltimore fans are allowed to hate the Colts, Houston fans are allowed to hate the Titans, etc.

Literally this. When you're getting into a sport you watch a handful of teams. Then you narrow it down based on how they play. I got into bastketball 5 years ago, really like how Monta Ellis played and have been a Golden State fan since.

>>64068885
>but we did produce the goat

>>
I'm not American. But post code is what defines the 'real' UK football fan from the bandwagoner. Have to have those first four digits. Makes most people a bandwagoner, but it is what it is. Can't really apply to American football, but Americans don't pay so much mind to location in being a fan - and why should they with so few teams to so many people. I'm of the mind that if you watch a home game a season and watch as many others as possible at home, then that's all that counts.
>>
>>64066587
In the U.S., not necessarily. Sometimes the owner of the team is such a douchebag that you cannot be a fan of the team.

Case in point: the Houston Oilers and Bud Adams. Cheap-ass owner who always skimped on players and coaches thus producing either utter shit teams or teams that choked as if they were Peyton Manning.

Top off this garbage with blackmail ("Give me a new stadium for free or I move team to Jacksonville") and you can't help but hope that the team goes 5-11 (no playoffs, no high draft pick) and the owner dies in a horrible, fiery airplane crash.

It was sweet that Adams died without ever winning a Super Bowl. It was truly regrettable that he even got to a Super Bowl.
>>
>>64070379
Don't worry. Even if the Chargers move to L.A., they'll move out of L.A. Angelenos are the ultimate bandwagoneers. A few seasons of 8-8 and the stadium will be empty.

I've never quite understood, when Americans say their town 'doesn't have a team' do they mean literally?

What's to stop someone setting up a new team for their area that fans can follow and developing it into something good or are some people just too impatient for that?

a) money
b) they're already fans of another team, the market is saturated
c) they'd need other teams to play against

Only if it's run properly.

At the end of the day you are giving them your hard earned money and if the organization is run by idiots who are pissing away every cent then they are not worthy of your attention, money or time. Again, they are wasting your money, either the money you directly give them by buying merch, tickets/whatever or indirectly by watching them from which they get their share of TV money. Not the owners money, not the coaches money, not players money. YOUR money.

Plus if your local team is shit you are also putting useless misery in your life. Which is not healthy at all. Sports should be something that you enjoy even if you aren't playing.

If after all those things you support your local team then you are just being guilted into it by people(the owner, execs, etc) who probably have a million times more money than you.

Be smart.
