Former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew confirmed Lomu had died unexpectedly this morning.

>All Blacks great Jonah Lomu has revealed his major ambition is to live long enough to see his two sons turn 21.
>Lomu has to receive dialysis on a regular basis because the kidney transplant that fixed his giant body in 2004 was rejected in 2011. The 40-year-old, who proved such a sensation at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, and also played in the 1999 tournament in Europe, hopes to receive a second transplant but accepts the odds of his body rejecting the organ are now much greater.

>>63642705
don't have a clue about football, association or american. Probably easier to compare to American because they're more similar, relative, to a really fucking giant and fast running back GOAT
the thing about jonah was that the game was amateur when he started, and training was lesser. He was played on the position for really fast, but usually really small guys with a low workrate. They just had to finish off tries.
He revolutionized it. He was 6'5, fucking huge and really fast. He'd just run right through people and still be the fastest player on the team. Really encouraged people to bulk up the year or two after the World Cup. Led to players like Julian Savea.
He was a complete outlier in that position. Insane.
>>63642705

>>63642705
David Beckham
Had a really good period but overall his reputation plus marketing exceeded his actual production
Like Beckham he never won a World Cup
>>63642705
One of the ones that was a big dude who wasn't very skilled but ran over a ton of people.
He was a big guy who was fast and played in a position that was typically filled by small dudes. So he basically just ran over all the manlets that he was matched up against, often in spectacular fashion. As a result of him the game changed - defence became much more important and the size of the average player increased a lot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsXTa7UCGlk
>>63642756
Natural causes.
>>63642754
Yeah, he was a literal game changer. Both changed how the game was played on the field and could change the outcome of a game single-handedly.

I met the big guy once, it was at the Halberg awards (annual sports awards show). A bunch of people from my school were helping out and I got to show him to his table. This was when he first got unwell, before his transplant. He could barely walk.
When he got to his table he looked up after sitting down and said 'cheers mate' like I'd done him a huge favor. Really I'd done nothing, just pointed him to a table.
Always made me happy seeing him on TV the last 10 years or so, doing so well. Seemes like such a good guy.Not anymore tho lads. Tough day.

Literally the first and best example of the 'meme' player
I don't think anybody here is old enough to actually have watched him play and while he was very good there is so many guys I would say were better all round wingers than he was. Nobody was better at trampling small French accountants and Englishmen than he was and highlight reel is as good as it gets but overall I think he was iconic on an individual level based on how he looked and his size rather than his skill level.
He ayed when rugby was practically amateur and if you look at his competition there was some absolutely dreadful wingers that he played against
Gonna make me sick watching all the shit people will dribble about him even though they only watched his highlights reel on youtube today
Don't know who this is, but he would get absolutely destroyed in the NFL anyways. Rugby is a crap sport

The thing to remember about the bogan is that their allegiance is not to any particular sport, but to the nation of Australia.
It is for this reason that the Australian bogan gravitates so strongly to the three tent-pole sports of boganism - Cricket, Rugby League and AFL. The bogan gravitates to these sports not because he enjoys, or even understands them. The bogan cares only that Australia is the best, thereby validating the bogan. And where else can the bogan assert that Australia is best, other than on the sporting field, where there is a clear winner and loser.
It is for this reason that the bogan will sometimes be seen supporting the wallabies - albeit often furrowing his brow in a vain attempt to understand the sport of rugby. They can't understand how an Australian team might not be the best in a sport, but they will support the team when the team appears to be on the cusp of establishing themselves as the best in the world, only to promptly decry the sport, and not the team, in the event that Australia should lose. A failure of the national side is a failure of the bogan himself, and the distancing of one's self worth from the worth of the national sporting team would require a degree of metacognition that the bogan is simply not capable of.
So the rest of Australia will continue to humour the bogan, as without them our shipping, construction and minerals industries would grind to a halt. And the television networks will continue to play AFL, rugby league and cricket in order to pacify these puzzling creatures. And every now and again on a humid summer breeze you will hear their cries of ">muh state of origin" and ">muh Warney" and you will know that the Australian economy is in safe hands, at least for the immediate future.

He was a bit of a meme player even back then, he couldn't catch well or kick which were the only things the wingers had to do besides finish tries. Him and Campese changed that position though, Campo when on the blind side would wrap around and act as another half and set others up for tries constantly if he didn't back himself.
Lomu was special in that if he was healthy and had the ball pretty much no one was stopping him. He only started to get shut down when teams literally made it their goal to shut him down. He was the first winger who really could make something out of literally nothing and just go it himself, opposed to just getting the ball after the rest of the backs did all the work.
