Willie Mays was the second best baseball positional player post color barrier according to Baseball Reference WAR (156.2), and third all time. You can definitely make an argument for him being the best baseball player ever.

Ruth and Bonds are numbers one and two all time respectively (163.1, 162.4). Bonds was better with the bat but he did have help from the roids. Personally I don't really care about roids but theres a generation of baseball purists and sports writers who must defend the honorable hall of fame from exciting transcendent athletes.

I think when you consider Ruth's extensive pitching career, which was worth another ~20 WAR he is the best baseball player of all time regardless of era. Plus he hit for power in an era when no one else did.

Personally, I would go with Cy Young (pitcher). 511 wins (back when wins used to mean something) and 749 complete games is insane.
