The World no.1 is hot favourite to claim his second World title (with only Gherkin, Taylel & Gando coming in at under 20/1 with the sponsors), and given the year he has had, it would take a brave/foolish man to bet against him. The prize pot has increased again to £1.5mil, with the eventual winner pocketing £300,000 (which is set to increase to £500,000 by 2020 as Billy Hill’s have extended their sponsorship contract), while the other big change this year sees the preliminary round ties switch from matchplay to best-of-3 sets, giving the assembled cast of jobbers with pub averages even more precious airtime. Sky have once again got a dedicated darts channel, with Sky Sports F1 making way for the arrers for the duration of the tournament. Tonight sees Gary Anderson get the defence of his title underway against Andy Boulton or Per Laursen, along with a classic Rod Harrington “MUH STRENGTH IN DEPTH” tie between Jamie Lewis & Daryl Gurney, and also the possibility of Peter Wright being hilariously dumped out at the first hurdle by Keegan Brown. Well, the day after MVG destroyed Snackpot at Minehead, 149 jobbers turned up at Coventry's Ricoh Arena for the PDPA qualifier.
In a fascinating case of jobbing before you've even started, Ronnie "The Rocket, O'Jobbervan" Baxter failed to make the 11am start as he arrived late by two minutes, thus ending his streak of Worlds that went all the way back to 1995.
For those who did turn up, Round 1 saw the end of one Paul Nicholson. Asstit lost in the final leg to ultimate jobber Terry Temple, which resulted in these tweets:

Rapid Ricky then beat The X-Factor in a last leg shootout to book his place against Shitlock and condemn Boulton to playing Big Per Laursen.

Andy Boulton proved his PDPA qualifier runner-up spot was a waste of a space as he had to rely on Per Laursen choking numerous match darts to get past the Dane in the preliminary round before he averaged a non-threatening 85 against the World Champion. Still, he's taken £10,000 home for that trouble so who are we to complain? I bet we all wish we could earn that for 2 hours work.
Elsewhere, the first "shock" of the Worlds happened as Jamie Lewis crashed out at the start of a tournament for what seems like the zillionth time in his career in the game of the night as Daryl Gurney powered past the World Number 31 who didn't impress.
Peter Wright also advanced with ease past an incredibly underfire Keegan Brown who is showing nothing of the form that got him to the Grand Slam quarter-final last year. You have to wonder whether the youngster can get back to his best sooner rather than later.
