ITT: Idiots who don't know what convolutional neural networks are and how this machine learning algorithm works. This doesn't check for facial symmetry - this shit is much more sophisticated than that.
First, this website is far more accurate than anything that could be hardcoded by hand. It's essentially a bunch of statistical weights used to simulate neurons in an 'artificial brain' network. This network of weights learns by example: You give it a bunch of faces and it learns which ones are attractive based on ratings that people have given for these pictures.
The limitations of this neural network lie within the dataset. The photos used for the training set are from Switzerland, so what people find attractive there will become what the neural network determines to be the heuristic for attractiveness.
Finally, it should be obvious that if you give the neural network a picture of a wrench, it should, predictably, give you a bullshit result. It has never seen a wrench so it will attempt to give a rating to something that is not at all similar to data from its training set. This leads to weird ratings when you throw a bunch of pictures of gorillas or yogurt at it.
However, for normal pictures of faces, it should be pretty damn accurate, but not perfect. The more data you give these neural networks, the more powerful they become.
Don't use the fact that it throws out bullshit results for random objects or miscellaneous stuff outside of its training set as some sort of justification for why the result it gave your face is also bullshit. It's not.
