Most of the time the originality that Indie hipsters seek out is spit worth. In fact, they have the audacity to call their work original as in rest of it wasn't original. Art films that aim to be art tend have everything but art. Most of their work is sludge fuckery that only does as much as enable you to fall asleep. And as for genuinely more advanced cinema and by extension advanced art, it has never and never will be appreciated by masses because it is precisely the opposite of the 'average' - which masses embody. Masses consume average because they are the average. It is as if wailing as to why Bach's Matthews passion isn't as popular as it is amongst the masses. I can't even. If you want to understand why the production of high art doesn't have as many patrons as there were in Renaissance, you have to understand that the target audience in former is literal aristocracy, the best of the best within society, whilst the later, modern day audience of masses, is the opposite of it.

There are actually quite a lot fairly popular movies that would not fit your description in the slightest. I am not sure how well they would fit into the description of an independent film, since i do not know wich "size mark" a production company is not allowed to cross to be considered independent but they are full of interesting artistic ideas.You have just to dig a bit deeper than watching movie commercials on the televisor.
