I'm from Mississippi. Also a long-haired gay guy. It's pretty hard to find people back home, but I find that the larger campuses have a greater selection of more open-minded people. Honestly, I don't think you need to change at all. Just find the right place with the right people to figure it all out.
Cut your hair and do a mad men hairstyle with gel, you'll be much much much better looking and wont have problems anymore
