ever since then, your father hasn't been the same. he started drinking and he tries to hit you.
you're in good shape so you aren't afraid, but you feel bad for him. you want to leave home and move into a dorm so you can focus on your studies more, but you know if you leave your dad would probably kill himself. you can't keep living like this though.
during a thunderstorm and heavy rains you and your friends decide to get high and cut loose. the weather is warm so you don't have to worry about catching a cold.
you end up in the woods by the river, and you find a small black cube in the water. it's about the size of your fist.
one friend tell you to get it appraised and pawn it.
another says to just leave it in the water.
you put it in your backpack and stop thinking about it.
eventually you black out drunk and wake up in your bed the next morning with a throbbing headache, still wearing the same clothes from last night.
you walk out into the kitchen to make some breakfast and your dad is out there. he is already drunk.
he starts lecturing you about leaving the fucking door open when you come home at 3am.
you tell him to shut up and drink some coffee.
he takes offense to this and pushes you.
in your attempt to fend him off, barely even touching him, he somehow flies across the room and smashes into a wall corner, breaking his back.
you're in shock and disbelief at what just happened.
you run back to your room to look inside your backpack, and the black cube is there, but there are geometric patterns on it now.

on a whim, because this is way too sp00ky to ignore, the two of you decide to go together.
she has some babysitting money saved up and decides to steal her parents van. you have student loan money in the bank. it's the middle of the summer so it's warm enough to sleep in the car.
the two of you drive for 16 hours without stopped except for fast food and gas.
you've known each other ever since she moved into the neighborhood a month after your mom died. you were always too busy with school and work and putting up with your dad's drunken bullshit to ever get to know her.
neither of you have much in common but it seems like both of you just keep laughing at each other's jokes, and something about her helps your mood calm down and not think about the fact that you just killed your dad with some ungodly magic or superpower.
her father is in the military. a good heart but emotionally neglectful.
her mother is kind but she suspects she's lesbian because it's a dead marriage and she's always going on vacation with other women.

one of them walks over to the van, looks in, turns around to his friend and says hey buddy we got us a couple'a love birds over here.
his friend laughs.
he tells you to get out of the van. right now.
you put your pants on and climb out of the back.
the two rednecks stumble over their own words and make some poorly delivered, sexually aggressive jokes about "your girlfriend".
you tell them if they you don't want any trouble.
the one closest to you takes a swing at you with the butt of his rifle and manages to clock you in the temple.
the throbbing headache from before comes back and you can feel your chest burning.

you start to get up and lunge towards him to throw a punch, and even before your fist connects with him, he is shoved back and his head cracks against a boulder and bleeds out.
