Serious answer: Hollywood exces, rightly or wrongly, think people won't watch shows unless there are pretty pretty people to look at.
However, the majority of actresses under 40 these days can't act for shit. Their only "talent" is looking good, which you can achieve from an older, far more skilled actress with the right makeup, lighting, and shot selection.
If all you need is a semen demon, you can hire a young actress. If you need someone who has the acting chops to play a role more challenging than wearing a low-cut top and leaning forward every so often, you get someone over 40.
Same reason that Liam Neeson and company get all the roles for action movies despite being on the verge of needing a Zimmer frame to get around. They have the charisma and acting ability to sell it, unlike Orlando Bloom or Taylor Lautner or whatever.
