You are a supreme being on a young and fresh world. You are undetectable, yet you possess a specific set of powers: You can add mutations to the creatures that inhabit it.
The world itself is a simple one, a rock globe covered in a shallow see, with the deepest point being twenty meters (60ft) under water, and the shallowest half a meter (1-2 ft). Several creatures inhabit this world, yet you will only change these four, and their offspring. Will you make them thrive? Or will you make them shrivel? It is all up to you, and your friends.
Welcome to the Shallow Waters Evo game!
Rules/How to play:
>Take the art of a creature already existing, be it a basic one, or one already modified by another user. How many times it has been modified already does not matter, but make sure you are not the last person who modified it.
>Open MS Paint, or any other drawing program
>Add a small, semi-realistic mutation to the creature. That means, a thicker shell, spikes, functionless and small appendages, etc.
>Post it in the thread, with a small description of what changes you made.
>To work to something greater, like functional wings, multiple steps need to be made (eg. Minor appendage -> Big appendage -> Feathers for gliding -> Functioning wing)
>Once every while, an extinction event will take place. Any affected creature that does not adapt before it takes place, will go extinct. Extinct creatures can no longer evolve.
DO's and DON'T's
>Do participate, no matter how bad your art is. Most people are shit at MS Paint here, so never be ashamed
>Do completely change the art of a creature, if you're okay/good at art and stuff, and if you feel a creature needs it, because it's getting too full or something.
>Do work on other branches, and the creatures of others
>Do be a nice guy
>Don't complain when your OC Waifu and its entire branch goes extinct
>Don't add mutations that are too complex (eg. fully functioning eyes, incredible wings etc). Realism of the mutations themselves doesn't really matter, as long as it can be semi-scientifically explained, and again, are not too complex at once. (DO : Fire breathing because gas from the creature's gas bags are released and ignited by a small spark in the creature's throat. DONT : This creature conjures fire when breathing)
>Don't add a mutation to a creature whose last addition was also by you. This can be forgiven when no one within ~2-3 hours / 50 posts has mutated them, or they are about to go extinct.
>Don't devolve mutations made to your own creature because you dislike them or have other plans with the creature.
I will make a regularly updated evolution tree, in which all mutations/species are listed, and if they're extinct or not.
Posting separate art of the organisms for editing after this post.

I enjoy the concept, but you're asking for people to actually do things. That's a no no.
If you were to do everything for us at our command.... then maybe.

>I enjoy the concept, but you're asking for people to actually do things. That's a no no.
I didn't make this up, though I must admit it is my first time running one. I've played many evo games on the old /tg/, and it was just going through a revive when /qst/ was born. I think there were some on here before, too.
>>208488
We had one evolution game thread run by The Librarian, an unsuccessful sequel thread and another few popular threads of another evolution game. I don't think The Librarian's evolution game thread - the first on /qst/ - was archived, though.

God bless you anon, for starting this off
Legs back, grasping appendage added
made the eyes a little more realistic and less derpy, also added some fins for faster transportation
some of these things developed bigger root things and a fluid muscle system so they can move
>>208488
Hey, one of my old charts from Primordial. I may need to join in later. Here's a cleaned up copy of that. It's linked since it's been split into two pictures.

>>210118
I'll join this team.
>Miqea:Devolve stronger grip and bigger claws.
Longer intestines that can also devour dead meat from other dead creatures/more hard to digest material. Is this too much for one mutation? Im trying to make this one like an omnivore? Maybe turn the plant into a kind of "food source for its kind like humans with animals
>>210123
draw it yourself bro
chemical byproduct produced that kills pretadors that eat its "food lobe" however when plant dies, the poison is leached into the water and food lobe is edible.Im not trying to play sides here so im playing both fields since thread might die
>>210133
RIP
nerves better in tune with each other so eye to brain to muscle much faster.im trying to do like a insect thing here where space time is slowed for them, figure it would help them catch prey. Although since its a mutation, the actual change is small, OP are you gonna do natural selection? Because that would increase the effects of mutations.
>>208494
I`m tempted to reboot the sequel, this time with all the evos from The Librarian`s first evo, Crystal Evo and the sequel this summer.
looks like op got bored, for fucks sake
it now has gills for optimal breathing
>>210370
Nope. Made the thread at 8pm, went to bed at 11, had to get up in the morning and am at school atm. Will definitely update as soon as I get home. First extinction event will be announced in an hour or two.
>>210148
Non-stop natural selection is an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how to implement it. Until I find a way to implement it, I'll just be using extinction events for making creatures go extinct
its got a bigger tail
Burk got a sweet ass paint job to better camouflage it in its feeding grounds
burk got a bigger array of eyes so it can see good
>>210485
I love Burk
>>210488
burk will win no doubt
Burk's tail is stronger
Our planet is cooling off! The seas are slowly getting colder and colder, and thin, easily breakable sheets of ice are starting to form on the pole-areas.
Every creature behind the red line will die out, only if their offspring is mutated to cold resistance, before the cold truly kicks in, will survive!
Also, please quote/reply to the post that has the creature in it you're about to evolve. It makes it easier for making these trees, since I know if branches are splitting or not.
>>210118
Miqea evolves specially adapted blood proteins to enable it to live even in colder waters
>>210513
when will the extinction happen op?
>>210496
burk gets less dense skin that absorbs smaller amounts of cold from the chilly water
his skin is weaker though now so b vcareful
he also develops a little non functional fin
>>210526
In a little more than half an hour from now (16:00 CEST)
>>210471
reedover develops a layer of thick fat on its belly and back to protect it from the cold waters
id love to save illuvid but i dont have any ideas for it lol

The cold has finally kicked in to its fullest extent, and the area around our poles has completely frozen over. The rest of the planet only thinly freezes over at night.
Species perished: 16

>>210574
MS Paint is fine, the quality of the art doesn't really matter. If you somehow haven't got this on your pc, you can also use paint.net, GIMP, PS or anything that allows you to draw things onto other things.
>>210579
omg my baby has developed so much
>>210527
Burk has evolved better fins and sharper teeth to hunt!
lets split the evolution so that one burk becomes a carnivore and the other becomes a herbivore!
>>210598
wat I was literary making the exact same thing while you posted this lol
>>210598
didnt mean to spoiler the image oops
>>210601
I've been working on that one for literally minutes
some burks that ate more plants, developed 2 rows of flat teeth to grind plant fibers
>>210608
O and they also developed a thing on their tail to fight with, made from the same material as their teeth
>>210608
Burk develops chitinous plates on its back to protect it from predators
Some Burks evolve more articulated fins and start using them to "walk"
some illuvid grew a big, sturdy skin partially over their brain thing to keep it save
>>210566
Sea sweet potatoes evolve a chitinous shield to protect their planty meat
The shell is provided with a tiny hole used for trapping nutrients from the water and dead pieces of animals
>>210641
illuvid develops light sensitive cells at the front of its head, to protect itself it can now instinctively head to shallower water where less predators reside
the miqea developed some pinchers and grew small light sensors on their antennae
>>210598
Feeling like participating too.
Some of the new predatory Burks develop a stronger tail, as well as a pattern that allows them to move almost undetected, when looked at from below.
>>210538

>>210674
Whoops forgot to save it before posting
>>210655
Some of the carnivorous Burk have found success as ambush predators, they have devolved their fins and opted for a slimmer build which allows them to hide in underwater caves
>>210667
>how are the species going to interact with each other op?
Right now, they don't really interact mechanical-wise, but future extinction events may be the cause of interactions between species (for example, a predator grows too powerful, a kind of prey has gone extinct since last extinction period, stuff like that.
If anyone has any suggestions, pertaining this topic or another, please do post them!
The finny burk has adapted a second pair of 'walking' fins
>>210628
thats evolved from this one op
>>210679
some of the curks (carnivorous burks) grew way smaller and started to attach them to bigger organisms to extract resources from them

Illuvids have now a "beak" used both as defence mechanism and to attack animals above them by jumping
okay drew this thingmy own since I didn't really know were to start on the previous drawing, i added some fins

>>210772
yeh the one with the fin is like a parasite it isnt in the caves

>>210625
the hurks started to grow bigger and fatter with more bone plates on their back , they also developed another set of fins
>>210734
illuvid gets a bigger tail and rudimentary nostrils to find food more easily

Some of these Illuvids have evolved a small bladder for water propulsion. This allows them to move quickly, yet only for a single burst and uncontrolled
>>210527
burk evolved in a different way, this time into a flatfish which blends into the ocean floor
>>210790
can we get another update op?
thi maybe a little bit too much, but some of the reedovers got smaller tails and bigger fins, I alos place their mouth closer to the spike since I couldn't really see them eating something that is stuck on it's point from that far
>Miqea
Evolve bigger head and longer, stronger legs.
>>210918
Damn right you can
As an unplanned side effect from the planet becoming colder, an incredible amount of gold particles has been released from the bottoms of the sea. The gold, although harmless to the skin, is dangerous when ingested by either breathing or eating, and creatures can not live without these two essential things.
You have until 20:30 CEST (1.5 hours), to mutate your creatures in such a way, they become resistant to this abundance of gold. Keep in mind that you can mutate every creature still alive, and not just the ones last in the tree.
Everything before the red line will go extinct, only its mutated offspring can live. Make sure to edit them before they disappear, because once that has happened, they can not be mutated anymore!
>>210887
illuvids gain tendrils that can be used to collect food and guide it to its food storage
Latest chart, because I forgot to refresh while typing
>>210939
if the animal is a carnivore should we consider that the prey has already developed a way to get rid of the gold?
>>210950
Yep. Just become gold resistant somehow, by (for example) filtering it, using it in your body, finding ways to avoid it and anything else that somehow works.
>>210746
the curks evolve, developing an incredibly thick gut lining which prevents gold particles from being absorbed into its body (they are simply removed from its body as poop) and its gills gain a thin membrane which prevents solid particles from being breathed in
the hurk develops organs that remove the gold and put it in small groups at their skin surface, the glinstering can scare and confuse predators
>>210937
Miquea evolved in a different way.
We are now fast breeding land creatures and herbivores.
>>210973
lol what will they eat on land?
>>210973
>land creatures
Sorry to break it to you, but the entire world is an ocean
>>210977
oh snap
>>210937
miqea develops an organ that removes gold from the bloodstream and quickly incorporates it into its shell providing additional strength
>>210975
Probably theyre still bond to bodies of water
>>210795
Gold is collected near the mouth and the glimmer allows the cave Burk to attract prey closer before it strikes
>>210984
Add thermal vision and fast breeding.
reedovers developed filters to stop gold from coming inside them, they also enlarged their back fin to look larger
>>210645
the hole in illuvids back is where food and air is collected, the mutation is a net like structure over the top of its hole which prevents gold from entering its body
someone save my flatfish please :'(
>>210912
Many of the flat burks evolve an organ that projects a small but quite strong electromagnetic field. This field doesn not only allow them to feel things in their area, it also pushes away a large part of the metals in the area it swims
>>211018
Damn you were lucky, was just working on it because I loved how it looked.
>>211027
It's flat! It's Fat! It's got two rows of eyes! What's not to love
hurks now have bend mouths
>>211011
Reedover's eyes are on stalks (they can move freely around 360 degrees), they can move independently and perceive ultraviolet light enabling them to easily find prey even in the darker parts of the ocean
>>211047
it looks as if he has a massive overbite
>>211046
Hurk has a longer body
>>210941
Tendrilled Illuvids now coat their tendrils in the gold they manage to find, granting them sharp claws able to pierce and cut their food.

the tailless reedover developed even bigger fins
>>211118
oh shit dog, burk is the bomb
Extinction event over! Everything with a red cross is dead, and unable to evolve any further.
Death toll:
Species: 36
Branches: 3
Will most likely be the last extinction event for tonight, though I can't guarantee it. Please continue evolving though, because more diversity is better in evo games!
im having tea but i will return
>>211173
why are the reedovers getting larger and larger on the chart lmao
the tailess reedover developed a tail again, the use it to quickly move it to go faster and then they glide above the water for a short moment of time
Some hurks began moving into shallower waters to avoid predators and to eat other shallow water organisms.
>>211253
hahahahah he is so cute
>>210994
miqea has grown a tail with a poison sac at the end
the flork (flat bork) moved his mouth so he can look when he is eating, he also developed small spikes on his back
>>211253
The hurk has grown a horn, that'll teach the predators to fuck off
>>211340
is the mouth on the underside im confused
>>211359
yeah like real world flat fish things
>>211118
the hurk's front 2 flippers on either size have fused and its larger in size than before to make it harder to eat
>>211403
Changed my mind about keeping the back flipper, dont use the other one in the chart op
>>211411
I was about to say it looked like a little floppy benis but okay
>>211208
reedover has become longer and thinner to allow it to jump out of the water more easily
>>211419
how about now ;)
>>211353
The shallow water hurks have begun using their horns in mating rituals. Females will often choose males with the most unique looking horn. Generations of sexual selection have developed larger and more intricate horns.
>>211463
Further protection is added to the burks belly
>>211074
Illuvid gains antennae
>>211340
The flork develops a long tail
>>211508
The florks eyes develop into 4 more advanced eyes
>>211481
the shurks their mouth moved up again since they can now move their necks beter, this resulted in the horns growing more upwards also: more protection
>>211114
These curk develop small, sharp appendages to allow them to latch onto their prey more easily
>>210968
Changed the shape of its mouth to make it easier to bite prey
Last update from me for today. Good night to y'all, and hopefully see you tomorrow. You can of course freely continue mutating through the night and tomorrow morning.
Also, image size of tree got too big, so we'll continue posting from the aurocene onwards until that gets too big too. Will save everything for a huge compilation later though.
>>211595
gn
>>210992
cave curk has developed limbs near its head that it can use to dig tunnels in the ocean floor
>>211595
Burkluga develops larger tail to help with movement.
Not much, but it's something.
>>211734
is this guy still a herbivore?
>>211761
yeh green ones are herbivores, blue/grey and yellow ones are carnivores
>>211761
Yes, but we we could always branch it off into a sort of killer whale.
Lose the chitin, unhook the mouth, etc.
I might do it right now, so thanks for the idea.
>>211797
Yeh i was going for a whale like thing with the fin fusing, feel free to change the colour scheme as well if you want!
>>211082
Add paralising venom
>>211046
Its lost a set of flippers but gained an incredible amount of armour plating
>>211839
you are really set on making this as deadly as possible...
>>211340
Some florks are lazy fucks that just sit in the same spot all day and don't swim.
They lost their tail and eat the soft parts of gold-containing creatures by trapping them in their magnetic field, and expelling the gold remains.
They're starting to look a bit like a circular blob more than a fish, although due to their camouflage you don't really see them in sandy areas.
The non-lazy fucks grow an extra set of eyes. Also, I fixed one of the fins because it didn't look quite right to me.
>>211330
These poisonous snippers try to camouflage as rocks, watch your step!
>>211734
Lost armor plating, hooked mouth and some weight.
Is now a carnivore.
Sleeker body, stronger tail, smaller front fins and a dorsal to allow for more speed and agility.
Extravagant colours to seem more threatening.
Gold collects around eyes to somewhat protect it, but to mainly make eyes look larger as to further threaten predators and prey
I didn't mean to make the damn thing so cute, but I did.
Did better than I thought I would to be honest.
>>211885
this is carnivore... so...
Add "Jet Jets" - It propels Miquea forward in short and fast bursts/jumps.
Gets some gills, more aerodynamic fins, and a little hole to get rid of gold that goes into its new gills.
>>211012
The mesh works very well and replaces much of the solid chitin, so that they can absorb more nutrients.
Larger mouth to get more food; gold starts to collect in teeth.
>>211430
Reedover experiences small changes in body shape which allow it to become more efficiently streamlined.
I just realized, if this is a time in which gold is very prevalent, does this make it a "Golden Age"?
>>212358
Is it superman? Is it a plane? No, it's a reedover!
Reedovers are using their immense speed and oversized fins to get out of the water and in to the air, gliding for long distances, and diving down wherever they see delicious prey!
>>212448
Red circle on white-ish background = Japan
Slant eyes
Flys
Spike on face
"Crashes" into prey.
You trying to make kamikazes?
>>212541
after mating the reedover kamikazes into the biggest hurk, shurk, or burkluga it can find. There, in its corpse, between the heavy armoured plating the newly hatched reedovers will find shelter while they grow up, feeding on the abundant flesh.
>>212263
gets a bigger body with a little extra fin
>>211883
Using the armor plating to it's advantage, the Hurk developed more of a catfish-like appearance and became a bottom feeder. Using it's nose, feelers, and the aforementioned plating, it is able to avoid being eating by hidden Florks. Using its gills, it filters food from the sand. It doesn't really swim as much as it did so its fins moved down for more movement on the ocean floor.
>>213219
also because im bored and tired, i decided to create the planet this evolution thing is taking place on. I figure it would be useful to more accurately visualize the impact of an extinction event on the planet.
>>211555
The Shurk's two frontal eyes became more advanced, but the other eyes became simplified to only detect light and dark.
>>213329
Last for the night, so I'll post it now
A beak like structure forms on the mouth to allow it to rip into flesh and shells. The skin has become darker(and more red) to bring attention to the shell so that it can both remove attention from its weak point and scare off other predators.
>>213467
I thought that was a herbivore...
>>212448
Larger fins for better gliding.
the hurk started to swim in warmer water, which means less oxygen so they developed lung like organs and a hole on the top of their head so they don't have to fully go out of the water
>>213526
develops bones in the fins to make them more rigid and better for gliding
>>213467
spikes
>>211734
burks fins have become much larger and it has a blowhole which allows breathing air from the surface
>>211501
illuvid can filter plankton out of the water using advanced suction, this also helps them propel themselves using their water bladder
>>212199
its developed a rudimentary stinger
>>213656
walrus burk gets a big ridge and a better jaw
>>210969
The Hurk starts to hunt in deeper water, and replaces it's eyes with one big eye to catch more sunlight.
>>211132
>Reedover
Is the biggest creature now.
>>211595
the charts gonna be a ballache to update now op
even an old design can be improved on, it seems, as the ancient miqea basica birthed a new breed,
miqea touridita.
the shell shrinks, to present less surface area to the cold waters, and the legs become more complex to allow the creature to escape predation more quickly. additionally, the mouth becomes more complex, and the feelers shrink, but secondary sensory pores develop.
>>212242
the orange curk develops grooves in its skin which improve its body allowing even faster swimming
>>213733
the spinter's miqea furthers its evolution, lengthing its legs, and slimming down,
it's denicles become calcified, and hard, and it's sensory organs become more tuned, picking up vibrations in the water to help it "see"
>>213747
the miqea becomes more and more carnivorous, and eventually, becomes quite the opportunistic predator and scavenger.
it becomes more armored, and begins to grow a tail, for use as a weapon against more dominant predators.
>>213721
My headcanon has been that those herbivorous burk descendants became very large and sluggish. They don't have to chase prey and their bony armour means freeing from predators isn't always as important.
Reedover would be slightly smaller than their prey, which is why impalement was working so well.
If they are so big, maybe they use their eye stalks to stay in hiding to launch a super quick surprise attack at a long distance. They gobble up anything that will fit in their mouth (most things) and that isn't fast enough to get away (also most things).
I gave them more advanced eyes and longer stalks.
If they are fast enough maybe they can even hunt with underwater sonic booms, taking out whole schools of fish at once.
>>213733
Miqea basica has gone extinct for quite some time, will treat this as the offspring of the youngest living species of miqea when adding it to the chart
>>213758
okay. fair dinkum
>>212262
Now miquea, can spread the cloud of poison from butt. also evolve immune to our poisons.
>>211559
These curk developed extreme sharp mandible to tear through armor and a better body to live underground with a little protection.
>>213780
forgot to select picture xD
Miquea leaves its shell due to early sensory development from feeding on a dead Illuvid's food lobe.
>>213786
How does this swim?
>>213781
the mandibles have changed shape and gained sharp growths to help them burrow further into their prey's flesh
>>212155
The Florks grow thicker, stronger tails.
This aids in locomotion and allows the Flork limited manipulation of objects why wrapping its tail around them.
>>213857
Florks grow small antennaes on their bodies
>>213873
do it yourself?
>>213857

Didn't ask to draw it but it would be nice since I have no computer and my experience with phone apps didn't go very well
>>213899
For more mobility, the flork evolves some limbs
>>213756
now it has a venomous tail and venomous fangs yay
>>213741
Killer Curk developsBIGASSHORNwhich is made from any gold taken into the body.
Ridges cover most of body allowing for better flow around the Curk, as well as some slight protection.
Gains small extra fin on tail for slight maneuverability boost.
>>213786
New miqea develops longer claws to better attach itself to its prey
>>213912
Create small heads with one eye on new limbs
wow two parasites already
Working on an updated chart. Next extinction event will be announced when I'm finished.
will this ever go into the modern age with big towering underwater citys
>>213770
Evolve acid "blood". (like alien)
>>213928
More tentacle limbs grow around the secondary tail-head. These limbs are controlled by the tail.

The Burk forms nostrils so that it can breathe air, and so it can live on land.
>>213939
sorry to inform you this buddy, but there is no land
>>213939
Oops, forgot picture
>>213939
Whole planet is icy ocean.
>>213946
Considering how shallow certain parts of the ocean are, breathing air isn't necessarily pointless . Rather than land it would just live where the water is only half a meter.
>>213946
I mean there's a lot of ice sheets so I guess they could live on them like north pole seals, but there aint no land yet, and no other inhabitants on these sheets too. Also, some parts are not that deep

The Orange Curk develops several organs akin to that of the electric eel, allowing it to generate an electric current. While the current runs through it's entire body, most of the charge is conducted through its golden horn. The shock is enough to stun or even kill any prey that its gored with its horn.
I have a question is there going to be a time when all of hell breaks loose and everything is fighting one another

The Orange curl gets new wings to better it's maneuverability and catch prey
Great winds have sprung from nowhere, creating huge waves that throw any creature from where they were trying to go. These winds are disastrous, but they have also created many muddy, temporary isles all over the globe, most of them only staying there for months at a time, before sinking again. Yet these incredibly cold winds still plague the surfaces.
Any creature that fails to adapt to being thrown around and shit will go extinct within the next 90 minutes (till 1930 CEST)
crap
>>213962
Does the wind affect creatures that don't really spend any time near the surface?
>>213967
Dude waves r effected by wind and waves fuck Shit up, no matter how deep they r, including currents
>>213967
Yes, basically all water is being fucked to the ninth hell right now.
how do you adapt to this?
>>213926
New miqea evolves better teeth to grip unto other creatures and rocks in the face of the winds. Little tendrils begin to form off of the new miqea aswell
>>213970
jellyfish type things
heavier bodies
grippy claws
there's a bunch of shit lad
>>213938
It's gonna take me a sec with my shitty skills but here's the description:
The Flork's tentacles grow stronger and more numerous. They develop suction cups that allow the Flork to anchor itself by wrapping its tentacles to a solid object and sticking to it.
>>213985
a sec to draw, that is.
>>213756
yay I added claws so they can attach themselves to other animals or rocks etc etc
