Hiro:

Please create a new board for software development and the discussion of free software.

/g/ has become the general tech-support board:

>which graphics card should I buy?
>rate my build
>what browser extensions should I install?
>/smartphone general/
>/headphone general/
etc.

There is no longer a place on /g/ for old-/g/ and what's left of /prog/. Stallman was the icon of /g/ for a reason.

It is sad that reddit is now the only place to go when you want to discuss topics that go beyond consumer devices and software. So please create a new board, /fs/, where we can discuss programming, free software, hacker-culture, and so on.

Thank you,
the people of /g/
>>
This, except I don't think it should be called /fs/.
As annoying as the microshills and applz fanboys are, some of them can code, and some of the nonfree software is worth having.

I'd suggest /dev/, or /pro/ in remambrance of /prog/
>>
>>532245
Program your own board you fucking sperg.
Why are you relying on a non-free site to discuss free software, anyway? You say one thing and do another, faggot.

>Thank you
Fuck off normalfag.
>>
>which graphics card should I buy?
>rate my build
>what browser extensions should I install?
>/smartphone general/
>/headphone general/
Better solution: move all of that crap to /cg/ - Consumer Technology while keeping /g/ for things that aren't simple consuming.
>>
>>532288
99% of 4chan users care more about tech support than programming. It's easier to create a new board for the 1% than to impose new rules on the 99%.
>>
>>532291
/g/ is for technology and technology is far more than programming, you fucking autist.

Hiro please do this. Lots of us don't care about hardware.
>>
>>532297
I agree. That's why I want to leave /g/ as is and create a new board.
>>
I support this
>>
I've looked at the /g/ catalog to document the state of /g/ and to show you which threads would go on /fs/ if we had it. As you will see, the good threads are downed out by dozens of tech support and rec threads.

threads that belong on /fs/:

>daily programming thread
>machine learning
>functional programming
>ethical hacking
>git clients
>Terry Davis
>analyzing software complexity
>useful bash scripts
>linux vs gnu/linux
>terry davis thread
>web development general
>programming language recommendation
>stallman bait thread
>wayland
>Javascript bad
>oracle vs google trial
>java bait thread
>stallman thread
>computer science
>what ARM manufacturer supports open source?
>hardware design

threads that could go on either board depending on the content:

>is there a program that solves captchas?
>best software company
>friendly linux thread
>XDA bait thread
>friendly linux general
>mpv general
>friendly linux general (nr. 3)

Also note that some of the good threads have very few posts and are low in the catalog:

>analyzing software complexity
>what ARM manufacturer supports open source?
>hardware design

These kinds of threads have a high entry barrier which means that they have no chance when being in the same board as 100s of recommendation threads. We need a sufficiently small board that focusses on these topics to have proper threads.
>>
>>532245
IMO there should be a legit tech-support board. It doesn't belong on /g/ and has no place in /wsr/ either.

Instead of wasting your useless life making lists that no mod will even read, why not fuck off to sites that DO discuss computer science and hardware design? You know, sites like Ask HN, StackExchange, /r/compsci, /r/linux_devices, and 25 other niche subreddits.
Or does it irritate your anus to realize that reddit will _always_ be a much better site for intelligent discussion than 4chan?
>>
what's the point? people who post in these kinds of topics >>532626

don't post on 4chan lmao. 4chan is the kind of place where you argue about programming languages but never get anything done.

if you want to talk about graduate level topics you're better off going to hackernews or reddit.

splitting the board is long overdue

moot was smart enough to split /a/ into 10 boards.

>>
>>533941
That was back in the very earliest days of 2003-2005, I doubt anyone knew how imageboards are supposed to work back then.
>>
>>533945
Then maybe it's time to coalesce /h/, /e/, /u/, and /y/ into one board to make room for a /g/ split.

freedom is overrated

>>532245
>technology is only blogging about your latest hello world/fart app and arguing about software licensing
/g/ just needs to be moderated properly, starting with the gamertards and egotistical FSF shitposters like you who have no passion or knowledge about technology beyond a year or two of undergrad CS courses and fucking around with Lisp.

>the people of /g/
Don't associate me with this shitty fantasy.
>>
>>532637
Or we can just, you know, nuke the rec threads. Half of the shit clogging up the catalog is like a minute of googling max, and the people asking them don't belong on /g/ anyway and are turning the board to shit.

and then that board would go to complete shit and /g/ would fall further down the hole because of the limited discussion

I have to agree. A software board would be perfect and would finally give people a place to actually discuss things instead of posting on the shithole called /g/.

>>534136
>limited discussion
You really know nothing about software and computers do you?

just like with /vr/ splitting up the board will just cause it to become shitpost central after a while
Why not just report shit threads and ignore shit threads dumbass

you really know nothing about boards, do you?
>>
>>534167
/vr/ was a mistake, so was /vp/. /vg/ however saved /v/ and /gg/ can do the same for /g/.

generals are literally just subreddits, this type of cancer needs to be contained on its own board.
>>
>>534100
>casual facebook tards with annoying as fuck to read typing styles
>blogposters that type ten paragraphs for a simple question
>gaymers trying to show off their garbage "rigs" in every post
>OS partisans that throw meme-laden tantrums when somebody uses/suggests a platform they don't like
>egotistical CS undergrads
>career shitposters
These are the kind of fags that make rec threads, typically about shit you can find the answer to by dropping into the relevant general and lurking for about five minutes to see what phone/GPU/monitor is getting shilled the most.

Why the fuck would you want these retards infesting the board, drowning out interesting discussions, questions, and OC in stale memes and blogposts?

Then you come here to bitch on /q2/ about how "/g/ is SO shit baww it's like another /v/ hiro make me a hugbox for superior LIBRE software and hipster language generals!"

Disgusting.

>NORMEIESs!!! REE
Ironic shitposting is still shitposting.

>>534156
Other than the part where computing is more than just CS homework help, what makes you think that such a board would be shitposting-free when software topics can be just as much of a retard magnet (if not more so) than hardware?

Nobody wants that but the janitors are clearly unaware of the board rules so what can you do?
