So 8gag is apparently shitting itself and is going to lose a ton more users due to a drama involving the new owner and mods. What are your thoughts on this?
>>
>>528440
8gag sucks. this is plebbit-tier drama
>>
who's jim? the cripple in the wheelchair?
>>

>>
>>528454
Jim is the guy who stole 8ch from the cripple basically
>>
>>528440
Great, even more /pol/itical kids who just can't shut up about how they love niggercock on every single board.
>>
>>528454
Jim is the guy who stole 2ch from Hiro and now apparently 8gag from Hotwheels. It should be noted that the latter willingly forfeited ownership in return for Jim's continued hosting and payment of their servers, however.
>>
>>528440
>change of ownership
Jim has owned it for well over a year now. Hotwheels was just the admin.
>>
>>528509
>>528508
how the fuck do you get a website stolen?
>>
>>528512
By hosting the servers for it and having control of the domains.

With 8ch it wasn't 'stolen'. Hot Wheels basically gave it away because he has/had no other way of keeping it stable. And it also got him a job.
>>
>>528512
In Hiro's case he stopped paying the bills because 2ch was costing too much money. Instead of taking the site offline and giving Hiro an archive of the site like most web hosts do, Jim decided to commandeer the position as administrator of 2ch and essentially booted Hiro from accessing his own site.

In Hotwheel's case I call it stealing because I believe at this point Jim is violating the agreeement terms that they settled on together. Hotwheels forfeited ownership while being guaranteed Jim wouldn't remove him as admin or influence the direction of 8gag. If he has indeed taken it upon himself to remove other people from their /op/ board as well as ban board owners he dislikes, then it's safe to say he's backpedaled on his oath to absolve himself from the community's direction. Hotwheels can also do nothing about it, since he is simply an admin.

>>528440
>chans as a format are dying
Not really. Altchans are dying. Just like they always have. Altchans have always fluctuated because of a good initial idea tied with terrible mismanagement. As long as 4chan exists altchans will come into existence and fall apart. If 4chan died it'd be time to worry about the decline of western chan style boards.
>>
>8gag voted as best chan
>by 8gag users
>>
>>528526
I don't fully agree with this evaluation. Niche chans do develop modest, yet dedicated user bases and offer discussion and content that's unique to their own communities.

The ones that wind up failing consistently are the 4chan clones, as I call them. They're the ones that boldly claim their intent to usurp 4chan and siphon all of its user base into theirs. They fail because unlike niche chans, they focus on building a massive community before developing a reason for the community to even exist. Their only sense of camaraderie is through trying to fuck over 4chan, which historically doesn't make for a very stable user base. And typically whenever the drama of the day settles down on 4chan, most of the rebels come gravitating back to this site because the 4chan clones only offer shittier content.

That sounds insane. Can you really do that, just take someones site?
Can it be compared to when rent is not paid on a storage locker and then the content gets taken away and sold off?
>>
>>528583
>taking control of one your client's websites against their will

What other word can you use besides stealing to describe that? It's not something reputable web hosts are supposed to do. One can argue his actions were even illegal.
>>
>>528590
Sure. If you don't have copyright/trademarks/etc on that stuff used there people can do whatever they want. Just like a storage place will sell your shit if you don't pay for your stuff. At the end of the day the person that controls the physical location of these things gets final say in whatever they want.

kek I was just coming here to say this
>>
>>528526
I equate this thing with the MMORPG genre of games with 4chan filling the role of WoW.
People think that since 4chan has millions of users that all of them need that many or it's a "failure".
Boards were/are better with smaller populations, as the quality of /v/, /pol/, and /b/ today should signify.
I have a couple other chans I go to and they're not nearly as populous as 4chan, and that's fine.
Just like MMORPGs that want to be the "WoW killer" often burn up spectacularly, the 4chan clones often meet a similar fate.
>>
>>528641
I'd like to see this, too.
Fucking Jim, that piece of shit.
>>
>>528641
He explained his end months ago when he first started as administrator.

He's still mad about Jim taking 2ch from him and he wants to sue eventually.
>>
>>528634
So what happens if Hiro stops paying bills now? Who takes control of 4chan then?
>>
>>528692
If hiro stops paying the bills, the 4chan servers will get removed from the colo facility (effectively shutting down the site) and the 4chan.org domain will expire and will be up for grabs. No individual will "take over" unless hiro gives them deeper access like he likely did with 2ch.
>>

What does this mean exactly? How did Hiro give Watkins deeper access?
>>
>>528713
He did it so he wouldn't have to keep bothering with legal issues. Hiro's no saint, he had it all coming, it's just that both Hiro and Jim are pieces of shit.

I miss moot.
>>
as long as they don't come back here
>>
>>528713
You cannot take control of an entire domain without access to the registrar. Watkins ended up having control of the domain, so my assumption is that hiro gave them access to the 2ch.net registrar at some point. And IIRC the watkins crew worked on the 2ch software, so taking over that was no problem either.

Lainchan and a few other small chans are better than 4chan honestly the only really good thing about 4chan is its speed.

You can laugh but we don't really have anywhere to go now. moot became disinterested in 4chan his last year and a handful of mods took over and run the site now. Hiro doesn't give a shit.

8ch was a terrible investment on Jim's part. The software was never able to sustain what Hotwheels wanted it to and he managed to ex-communicate everyone that worked on the software base.

As soon as Hot Wheels started begging 2ch engineers to fix the site it was bound to end up fully under Jim's thumb.

>>528798
2ch is stable and profitable, it's fine. 8ch is a badly programmed mismanaged pile of shit he's having to devote resources to fixing after being a money sink for over a year.

>>
>>528825
And how many did 8ch have? *smirk*
>>
>>528829
8ch at least had several thousand users. That's nowhere near the several hundred thousand users that 4chan has but it's still more than the 52 total users that endchan has. Maybe they'll pick up some 8ch users out of this.
>>
>>528831
8ch was a ghost town (and a better place) before the "4chan exodus" happened. Who knows what'll happen now.

>>528831
They're going to pick up all the 8ch users at this rate, is the point. Endchan is the new 8ch. Same format, and better servers, too. Embrace it.

>>528826
Eh. 8ch didn't really have a choice. They went through half a dozen hosts in a couple weeks because no one wants to keep them on their servers. It was either die or try to work with Jim.
>>
>>528836
There's three or four big scavengers hovering over 8ch's corpse. They'll all grow some but none will be even close to 8ch's scale. I think 8/a/ actually set up their own chan.

>Instead of taking the site offline and giving Hiro an archive of the site like most web hosts do, Jim decided to commandeer the position as administrator of 2ch and essentially booted Hiro from accessing his own site.
That isn't remotely accurate. Hiro offloaded legal ownership of the business to his Philippines based holding company, Packet Monster in 2009, as a means to obfuscate legal responsibility (corporations pull this shit all the time). They were paying N.T. Technology hosting service in San Francisco (www.nttec.com) to host the site and couldn't pay the hosting bills. The site domain registration changed to Race Queen, based in America and the Philippines (same as Packet Monster), putting Jim as the legal owner of the business. Basically Hiro was a CEO/board member who fucked up and lost his position because of it. To say that is "essentially booted Hiro from accessing his own site" is complete spin, and you know it.

During the time Hiro was "commandeering" the site, prior to Race Queen, he managed to rack up a shit load of fines for tax evasion and scrapped the site for his clone of the site which basically cost Jim a huge amount in bandwidth. Hiro fucked them over, not the other way around.

What does this mean? Did Hiro actually make Watkins the legal owner of 2ch? That sounds like a stupid thing to do unless you can trust the new legal owner.

Even Facebook is wildly popular in Japan. It's no surprise that chans and other sites that use anonymous posting attract the biggest number of losers and criminals.

No, you just never understood why most people liked anonymity in the first place.

There is no reason to use 4chan if you don't like anonymity. Go use another site

>b-but 4chan has the best memes
Do you honestly think that there's no correlation between not having to take responsibility for your words and producing a high amount of unique content?

Not that that's the main reason people like anonymity anyway.

Why do alt chans always fail?

I remember when 8gag was created it was touted as a much better alternative than 4chan, look at how that turned out.

I only go there for /aus/, seems to be unaffected by the drama
>>
>>530814
Literally every chan that builds itself as being "better than 4chan" dies the same way.

The special interest ones that don't really try to compete are the ones who live the longest, and are actually fun to read.
>>
>>530815

Its amazing how on /qa/ people whinge about the mods but look at every other chan without the same structure and rule enforcement which has ended up destroying itself.
>>
>>530818
the main reason they die is because there isn't enough traffic to support the website.

if there was an 8gag pass that generated as much revenue as the 4chan pass does then 8gag would never have gone the way of Jim.

8gag moderation really was leagues better than 4chan moderation.
>>
>>530814
Only when they try to become an alternative to 4chan. They're usually made by babies who got banned for being retarded.
>>
>>530820
>>530821

At this point I'm surprised 8gag hasn't been shutdown by the FBI
>>
>>530820
why don't you stay there if you like it so much
>>
>>530814
Personally when it comes to the question of: "Could we ever one day have a new site to call home other than 4chan?"
I wouldn't even count 90% of the alt imageboards as examples.

Everyone likes to say "they always fail" but almost none of them are really even valid attempts.

Just to clarify, what I mean is this >>530815
The 4chan clones never stood a chance. We shouldn't even count them when thinking about the odds that a new site could take over.

There might be more examples, but 8ch is actually the only one I can even think of right now, because it actually offered something _different_ other than "join us because our mods aren't 4chan's mods lol". It introduced the idea of user created boards.
and look what happened, it did become reasonably large for quite a time. I think their idea ended up being flawed, user created boards isn't what we need, and so many people just came back to 4chan. But it just shows that people are willing to try something new if you make a site that offers something unique.

We just need someone to come along with the right set of features or new take on something and it could be huge.
>>
>>530814
Size, and loss of original vision as the creator moves on.

Some of the "original" alt chans like 420chan and 7chan are still going strong and are arguably better than 4chan (i.e. they have less (useless/unfunny) shitposting and more on-topic content) because the original creators still maintain it and keep it in line with their original vision, usually a vision of something like 4chan in its software and culture, but adding something that it lacks (like how 7chan had a lot of porn boards that 4chan doesn't, 420 is specifically for drugs, etc)

4chan is only bigger because it was the first, and branched off of another internet giant, SomethingAwful (or at least, it was a giant at the time)
>>
>>530828
it's too slow

>>530826
>shutdown by the FBI

>>
>>530814
Small, autistic userbase = very bad imageboard.
Let's be honest here. 4chan is good because of the large normalfag userbase, and because moot wasn't autistic.
>>
>>530834
>Let's be honest here. 4chan is good because of the large normalfag userbase, and because moot wasn't autistic.
4chan has been getting progressively worse as it becomes more popular.

moot was an awful site owner and admin. he hardly ever fixed any issues because he would rather ban the discussion of complaints and the complainers instead of deal with anything.
>>
>>530831

Those two aren't comparable, first people announcing mass shootings and actually following through are rare, plenty of retards would make threats on 4chan but never follow through.

In any case 4chan mods would pass that information to the feds anyway, its a one off occurrence and not like its tolerated by the mods.

On 8gag with /baphomet/ and other boards there's a wide variety if criminal activity
>>
Here's a scenario, what would happen if 4chan disappeared off the internet?
>>
>>530836
>On 8gag with /baphomet/ and other boards there's a wide variety if criminal activity
doxxing isn't illegal though unless you post SS#s and shit.
>>
doxxing is lame and goes against the concept of anonymity so many people here claim to have.
>>
>>530834
>Let's be honest here. 4chan is good because of the large normalfag userbase
newfag leave now
>>
>>529107
Nunu, the person that ran the /operate/ board, was a global moderator, the structure there is admin-gmod-board owner-volunteer, and he would answer questions of users and look into things if he didn't know the answers himself. He was a fairly well liked mod and effectively the public face of 8ch for a while when the admin went underground.

So /operate/ was like /qa/ if a mod visibly and consistently posted on /qa/. Which fits with 8ch's gimmick but wouldn't really sit well with how 4chan functions.
>>
>>530838
I'd love to see what would happen if 4chan one day disappeared for, say, a month.
>>
>>530834
You're probably using "normalfag" to refer to something like people with normal interests, and if so then your post is reasonable.

But that isn't how everyone uses that word. In fact, the only definition of normalfag that I've never seen people argue over is "someone who strives for social success", and under that definition I'd say that normalfags absolutely do not make this site anything but worse. Because those are all the internet activists, people trying to spread memes (and I don't just mean pushing your own jokes when the situation calls for it, I mean actually being crafty and coming up with game plans to turn your crappy content viral), and all people of that sort of nature.

Moot seemed to finally see the forest for the trees when he left and expressed some regret that he didn't push the "hobbyist" side of this site more.
Anyone who uses 4chan for things other than having fun or discussing _hobbies_ is cancer.
>>
>>530850
>Moot seemed to finally see the forest for the trees when he left and expressed some regret that he didn't push the "hobbyist" side of this site more.
If he had done that he wouldn't have gotten that nice job at Google.

>Anyone who uses 4chan for things other than having fun or discussing _hobbies_ is cancer.
I see, you're one of those "4chan isn't for serious discussion, only shitposting"-redditors. Opinion discarded.
>>
>>530856
I see you're one of those people who always interprets people's posts in the worst possible way often completely changing its true meaning, just because he's looking for an internet fight.
Opinion discarded.
>>
>>530814
Because their 'better than 4chan' method is always having visible staff. Which just opens the way for constant criticism, complaining, and staff drama about every little thing. 4chan has all of that, but it's built on a 'deal with it' mentality since there's no other options. Which means it takes an actual event to really stir the pot.

Chans are too filled with contrarians and drama mongers for visible moderation to work. Invisible moderation is the way to go.

Another problem that tends to pop up is bad programming. The idiot with the vision to have so many new and better features than 4chan can't program competently and their software doesn't work on a core level. They overreach.

The ones that survive are usually the niche chans with simple software that have topics 4chan doesn't support, not the '4chan killers'.
>>
>>530836
Anything illegal posted on 8ch met with a ban pretty quick. For the FBI to shut them down they'd have to show that they were actually breaking the law. You don't get shut down for walking the line.
>>
I have a site that I made for the purpose of testing out new features that might solve some of these problems if anyone is interested. You could give feedback on the current feature set or even let me know if you have some interesting ideas, maybe I would implement them so you could see it in action. I don't want to directly link it though, so I'll put it in an expirable pastebin if someone is interested.

>>
>>530838

>>530880
What features do you propose that can solve "these problems"? Because regardless of what system you implement, if the community or moderators are shit, everything is shit.
>>
>>530884
Apparently it isn't yours. If you want people to be interested describe which problems you're trying to solve and how your features solve them. Your post is "I'm doing this thing which might solve this thing, you want to check it out?" Which says nothing at all.
>>
>>530834
This is quite possibly the most incorrect post I have ever seen. Normalfags bring in outside shit about their lives or social/world events where they are not needed or wanted.
Autists have a dedication to the subject and the time and knowledge to contribute to a board.
Obviously this is different on something like /pol/ that is meant to discuss worldly stuff, but on hobbyist boards normalcy is one of the last things to desire.

Also people who seriously defend Hiroyuki and Jim are equally retarded, they both fucked their users over on 2channel and both have "listen and believe" arguments when it comes to their stories. I don't care if Jim bans child model bullshit off of 8gag, its basically illegal anyways since it is produced through child abuse. The only thing that will get me to leave are a normalfag invasion and/or a ban on lolis.

Ron has been doing a good job so far and seems to care more then HW does nowadays. HW is basically dying at this point and he can't do it anymore.

By "fucking over the users", do you mean mining data, the data breach, or something else?

CodeMonekyZ and Jim have exactly the same goals anyway. Unless Jim plans to piss all his money away on cruise trips before he dies, the company will stay in the family.

Mainly the datamining, which Hiroyuki also does here (including moot from mid-2015 until he sold the site) since he sells site data to the ad provider. Now I'm even seeing fucking pop-ups on my browser if I access an archived thread without ad blocker and one thread redirected me to some porn page and others showing some pop up about roblox or some shit. That's a fucking scumbag move if you ask me.

Honestly I don't see Jim dying soon unless his Thai ladyboy stabs him in his sleep.
